Palais des Papes

The Palais des Papes stands majestically on the rocky heights at the northern end of the old town of Avignon, overlooking the Rhône River. It is one of the largest medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. In the early 14th century, the papal court moved to Avignon, and for nearly seventy years thereafter, several popes successively resided here, earning Avignon the title of "the papal city." The palace and fortress are integrated into one, with thick walls and multiple towers guarding its perimeter. Inside, it is divided into the old palace and the new palace: the old palace, built during the reign of Benedict XII, is simple and sturdy, with a strong defensive character; the new palace, expanded by Clement VI, is magnificent and grand, representing mature Gothic architecture, including the over-50-meter-long great chapel within its walls. Historical calamities have scattered most of the interior furnishings, making the architecture itself the main attraction—Giovannetti's frescoes on the domes and walls of the Saint Martial and Saint John chapels, the full-wall hunting scenes in the pope's study "Hall of the Stag," along with the lofty and spacious conference hall and the hall where cardinals once convened to elect the pope, still evoke the grandeur of the past. The tour route is quite long, with most halls now featuring plain stone walls, though the two small frescoed chapels and the "Hall of the Stag" are particularly worth close attention. The spacious halls make good use of the multimedia tablets available for virtual reconstructions, allowing visitors to "see" the original furnishings. From the palace's elevated terrace, you can enjoy panoramic views of the old town's red-tiled roofs and the Rhône River, with the nearby Pont Saint-Bénézet also fully visible. The Avignon Theatre Festival, held every summer, uses the palace courtyard as one of its main stages—visiting during this time lets you experience the lively atmosphere that takes over the old town.Avignon · 43.2km from Miramas

Old Port of Marseille

The old port area is the center of gravity and the essence of the entire Marseille region, not only because it is the origin of Marseille and was the third largest port in the world 200 years ago, but more importantly, the pure Marseille style can only be seen here. There are many famous monuments around the Old Port, including the castles of Saint John and Saint Nicholas built in the era of Louis XIV. In addition, the old port is also the life and entertainment center of the Maasai people. The area around the Old Port is a famous food district. Most of the restaurants in the port operate a famous Marseille delicacy - "Marseille Fish Soup". The "Old Port" is actually not old. It was rebuilt after the Second World War, but the locals still call it "Old Port". Apart from habit, there should be a historical sentiment in it. Every morning, the fish market here is very lively, and the wharf is full of small fishing boats and boats. The whole harbor is full of the unique leisure atmosphere of southern France. The master plan of the Old Port Mirror View Pavilion was jointly undertaken by FosterPartners and French landscape architect Michel Desvigne. A huge viewing pavilion of 46 × 22 meters, which is like a mirror, was built here. It is supported by 8 thin columns. Since then, the corners of the mirror pavilion have been gradually thinned to reduce the visual weight. The view of the surrounding old port is reflected from the ceiling of the polished stainless steel mirror, as well as the faces of thousands of tourists who stop to watch, creating a strange beauty, which not only provides a place for tourists to stop and shade, but also It allows tourists to become part of the landscape when they enjoy the scenery of the old port.Marseille · 43.9km from Miramas

Château des Baux-de-Provence

Château des Baux-de-Provence is located in the Provence region of France, perched on a cliff like an ancient vulture. Though the old main tower is weathered, it stands tall, as if guarding its former dignity. Amidst the crumbling walls, one can still glimpse the piety and solemnity of the past. It is this very imperfection that gives it a unique aesthetic value—a fusion of nature and humanity, a profound dialogue between ruins and life. From the highest point of the château, you can take in the magnificent scenery of Provence. Today, the Château des Baux-de-Provence is no longer a symbol of power, but has become a haven for history and art. It features full-scale replicas of medieval siege engines, transporting visitors back to the era of knights and castles. The well-preserved village of Les Baux below still maintains its medieval architectural layout and atmosphere, creating a dialogue across time with the castle ruins above.Les Baux-de-Provence · 23.9km from Miramas

Located on a 3-hectare limestone island 3.5 miles from the old port of Marseille, the Château d'If is a square fortress with a side length of 28 meters. In 1516, King François I of France came here, fully aware of its defensive value, and ordered the construction of a fort here, which is the symbol of Yves: Fort Yves. Chateau Yves has the advantage of natural danger, the defense is extremely tight, and it is almost impossible for prisoners to escape, and Alexandre Dumas is based on the experience of the only two escapees, Father Faria and Edmond Dantès. The world famous book "The Count of Monte Cristo", Château Yves is also famous because of this novel. Today, the cell in Château Yves has deliberately dug a passage according to the layout in the story. The Château d'If was originally an impregnable fortification in Marseille, and later became a national prison, where many princes, descendants of princes and nobles, Protestants, political prisoners, revolutionaries, etc. were imprisoned. The castle's conversion to a prison dates back to 1658, when Louis XIV, in his crackdown on the heretics, turned the Château d'If into a prison for Protestants and criminals. In the 19th century, after the French bourgeois revolution broke out, Château Yves was completely transformed into a prison for the feudal dynasty to suppress political prisoners. Since the first prisoner was held in 1580, the Isle of Yves has imprisoned more than 3,000 people over the centuries.Marseille · 43.1km from Miramas

The smaller island of Marseille, 300 meters long and 180 meters wide. At first, the island was uninhabited. King Francis I, when he was lucky enough to drive here in 1516, fully realized its defensive value and ordered the construction of a fortress, the Château Yves. It was an impregnable fortification that later became a state prison, where many princes and descendants of princes (such as Mirabeau) were imprisoned. It is said that Yves Castle is very tightly guarded, and it is impossible for prisoners to escape from here. However, Father Faria and Edmond Dantès, who were imprisoned here, managed to escape. Based on their experiences, Alexandre Dumas wrote the famous novel "The Count of Monte Cristo", and the Château Yves became famous because of this novel.Marseille · 43.2km from Miramas

Finally checked out two of Avignon's most iconic landmarks in the South of France! On one side is the Papal Palace, the massive mansion of the former popes, and on the other is the famous Pont d'Hôtel de l'Étoile (the broken bridge from the children's song). Both are just a few minutes' walk apart, and buying a combined ticket is even more cost-effective! 🏰 Papal Palace (Grand Papal Palace) It's breathtaking from afar. The massive stone walls are solid and imposing, befitting its status as the world's largest Gothic palace. Seven popes lived and worked here, making it the center of power in medieval Europe. The interior has numerous rooms, and the free tablet-based guided tour is incredibly useful. It recreates the rooms' original appearance, showing surviving old frescoes, a huge banquet hall, and the popes' bedrooms. Although most of the furniture is long gone, leaving only the stone walls, you can still imagine the grandeur of the Papacy in its heyday. You absolutely must climb to the rooftop terrace! It's an unparalleled viewpoint, offering a panoramic view of the Rhône River and the Pont d'Hôtel de l'Étoile, along with the red rooftops of the old town – perfect for taking stunning photos. A friendly reminder: If you're not interested in medieval history, this might feel a bit empty, but those who love exploring old buildings will adore it. 🌉 Pont Saint-Bénézet (commonly known as the Pont des Beaux-Arts in Avignon) Legend has it that a shepherd boy was guided by a divine oracle to build this bridge. Originally, it had 22 arches, but the Rhône River flooded it year after year. After a massive flood destroyed most of it, the locals decided the repair costs were too high and simply gave up, leaving only four arches. 😂 It's the inspiration for the French nursery rhyme "On the Pont des Beaux-Arts in Avignon"! Standing on the broken bridge, feeling the river breeze, watching the water flow by, and with a small chapel nearby, you can explore this short stretch in about half an hour. Although you can no longer cross to the other side, its ruined state adds to its charm, and the view of the Papal Palace from the bridge is a superb angle. 💡In summary: The Papal Palace offers a rich historical atmosphere and panoramic views, while the Pont des Papes (the bridge over the Papal States) provides romantic photo opportunities and perfect for recreating childhood memories. The two complement each other perfectly. After exploring the Papal Palace, wander into the old town's alleyways and find a small café to relax – this is the true way to experience southern France. I recommend buying a combined ticket for the Papal Palace and the Pont des Papes; this allows you to leisurely visit both places in one day, and half a day is sufficient.

The Old Port of Marseille is the most vibrant part of the city. The fish market bustles in the morning, cafes are filled with sunbathers in the afternoon, and yacht masts sway in the sunset at dusk. Old buildings line both sides of the port, alongside modern restaurants, and paving stones commemorate World War II. You don't need to specifically seek out tourist attractions; just stroll around, watch the ships, feel the sea breeze, or enjoy a bowl of bouillabaisse by the dock, and you'll experience the city's lively atmosphere.

It is a very large castle, and its geographical location here is also quite large. The architectural environment of this place is also very popular. It requires a little climbing. The castle is also a very important historical witness. This place used to be an environment where warlords fought for power.

Tickets were issued very quickly, and the local staff just took a picture of the QR code. The castle was very average, and there were many primary and secondary school students traveling, so the experience was relatively poor. There were Chinese instructions, which was quite convenient. The on-site queue to buy tickets was 7 euros, and those with EU residence permits under 26 were free.
