Bamian Mountain

4.4/5

Bamian Mountain stands majestically on the border of Hunan and Chongqing, bordering Youyang County and Xiushan County in Chongqing to the west, and belongs to theWuling Mountains. This is a rare high-altitude plateau: surrounded by steep cliffs, the mountain is long and narrow from north to south with pointed ends, looking like a large ship resting on the peaks of the mountains from a distance; viewed from the direction of Liye, the undulating ridgeline resembles a "sleeping beauty" lying quietly. On the summit, with an average altitude of over 1,200 m, a gently sloping grassland unfolds, with hilly pastures stretching over 50 km², hence the name "grassland in the sky." This grassland, suspended above the cliffs, is the core attraction of Bamian Mountain: with lush pastures and herds of cattle and horses scattered throughout, it has been hailed as "a pearl of the grasslands in southern China." The mountain is also dotted withsights such as Zisheng Bridge, Yanzi Cave, Beizi Rock, Yixiantian, Bijiashan, Wangxiang Terrace, and Xiling Cliff; karst caves, sinkholes, stone forests, and alpine lakes are scattered throughout, and the mountain area is shrouded in clouds and mist all year round, with scenes of surging cloud seas and glowing skies often encountered in the early morning and evening. Because there are only a few steep passes for entering and exiting the summit, such as Dayanmen, Xiaoyanmen, and Wangxiang Terrace, this place has been easy to defend and difficult to attack since ancient times. It still retains old place names like "Thirty-six Knives" and "Forty-eight Camps," and the anti-bandit battles in western Hunan in the early 1950s also took place around Yanzi Cave here. The average summer temperature at the summit is around 20°C, with cool breezes, making it a favored summer retreat for people in the surrounding areas.Longshan · 64.1km from downtown

Victoria Peak is renowned for its towering Danxia landform resembling a giant elephant and the Guoli River encircling it like a jade belt. Its fame spread far and wide due to the 1,600-year incense continuity at Puzhao Temple on its cliffs and its imperial designation as the "Orthodox Caodong Sect of Zen" by Emperor Guangxu. In the 1920s, renowned scholar Zhang Taiyan was so captivated while studying the "Dragon Tripitaka" here that he praised it as "the perilous Five Streams under heaven, the divine Victoria Peak." After a decade of refinement, the revitalized Victoria Peak attraction officially opened in 2020, featuring three main experiences: scenic meditation, sports leisure, and red-themed trails. Highlights include Guanyin Pavilion offering panoramic views of two counties, the imperial-certified Songyue Pagoda, Cloud-Climbing Ladder, cliffside plank walkway, China's first outdoor inclined viewing ladder, western Hunan's only aerial canyon glass slide, Danxia cliff via ferrata, revolutionary relic Xinglong Bridge (Red Army Bridge), and Sanpaotai. Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park is named after the natural wonder "Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park - Tianmen Cave." When visiting the attraction, you can enjoy a bird's-eye view of the winding Heaven-Linking Avenue and the stunning mountain scenery from the cable car. The brave can also walk along the cliff-hugging glass skywalk for an exhilarating aerial experience. Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park is located close to Zhangjiajie city. The Tianmen Cave in the park is a natural karst cave, and locals believe it leads directly to heaven. For ordinary travelers, Tianmen Cave is not open year-round. During winter each year, due to snow and icy roads, both Tianmen Cave and the Avenue toward Heaven (a winding mountain road with 99 turns) leading to it are closed. The lower station of the attraction's cableway is located in Guanliping, Yongding District, and the upper station isTianmen MountainTop. In 2020, the attraction opened the express cableway. The lower station of the express cableway is near the entrance to Tianmen Mountain, and the upper station is atTianmen CaveNear the parking lot. Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park is filled with ancient towering trees and intertwined vines. The attraction is divided into several main areas, including Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park - Tianmen Cave, central route, eastern route and western route. Travelers can choose different routes and areas to explore based on their preferences and physical condition. The core attraction along the central route is Tianmen Mountain Temple. Nearby lies the "Child-seeking cave," where folk legends claim Guanyin, the child-giving bodhisattva, manifested her divine power—devout prayers here are believed to grant offspring. The western route's highlight is a 60 m-long glass walkway clinging to sheer cliffs, with fully transparent flooring that induces both vertigo and exhilaration as visitors tread above abysses. Currently, the eastern route and Panlong Cliff each feature their own approx. 60 m glass walkways. No stay is allowed in the attraction, so it can only be visited within one day. There is a "Cherry Bay Restaurant" near Tianmen Mountain Temple, which offers snacks and fast food. Near the lower station of Tianmen Mountain cableway, there is transportation to the "Grand Canyon Theater", where you can watch the live show and magical musical "Tianmen Fox Fairy". Adapted from the mythological tale "Liu Hai cuts firewood", it tells a touching love story between a human and a fox. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is where Zhangjiajie tourism originates. "Everyone knows Zhangjiajie, but who recognizes Wulingyuan?" Many visitors are confused about the relationship between Zhangjiajie and Wulingyuan. Generally, Zhangjiajie refers to both Zhangjiajie City and the Zhangjiajie attraction. The Zhangjiajie attraction specifically means Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, which—together with Tianzi Mountain, Suoxi Valley, and Yangjiajie—forms the Wulingyuan scenic area. Since Zhangjiajie National Forest Park was developed earlier and gained greater fame, even Zhangjiajie City was renamed after it. As a result, people commonly use "Zhangjiajie National Forest Park" or "Zhangjiajie attraction" to refer to the Wulingyuan scenic area. "Three thousand spectacular peaks and eight hundred beautiful waters." The three thousand spectacular peaks, in particular, are world-renowned. Wulingyuan's mountains stand apart from famous peaks around the world. Across its 398-square-kilometer area, over 3,000 densely packed sandstone pillars rise dramatically, with 243 exceeding 1,000 meters in height. When sea of clouds roll in, these pillars appear to float without foundation, soaring straight into the sky. Alongside North America's redwood forests and Greenland's glaciers, they form one of Earth's four great geological wonders. Located at low altitudes in the subtropical zone, Wulingyuan thrives with lush forests and abundant water sources, supporting numerous endangered plant and animal species. Each pillar teems with life. The natural pillars, bridges, canyons, waterfalls, streams, pools, caves, and dense broadleaf forests often shroud in mist and clouds, enhancing their breathtaking beauty. This unique landscape creates a spectacular scene described as "majestic mountains, elegant waters, peculiar peaks, secluded gorges, and exquisite caves," earning its reputation as "an enlarged bonsai and a miniature fairyland." On December 14, 1992, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee unanimously voted to include Wulingyuan on the World Heritage List, filling China's gap of having no World Natural Heritage sites. Its recognized outstanding universal value lies in its exceptionally rare quartz sandstone peak forest landform, which possesses extremely high aesthetic value. UNESCO states: "Wulingyuan's scenery can be compared to several national parks and monuments in the United States, such as the Grand Canyon, as well as the sandstone peaks of Western Australia's Purnululu region. However, due to Wulingyuan's lower elevation and subtropical location, it boasts lush forests, abundant water sources, and numerous towering peaks that display more vertical profiles than the heritage sites in the U.S. and Australia." The visually stunning Pandora planet in the globally popular 2009 movie "Avatar" captivated countless viewers, with its floating mountains inspired by Wulingyuan. Additionally, Wulingyuan served as the filming location for Chinese literary classics like "Dream of the Red Chamber" and "Journey to the West," as well as movies such as "Zhong Kui: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal" and "Monster Hunt." In 2010, Wulingyuan's unique landform was officially named the "Zhangjiajie landform," becoming a globally recognized term and one of the few landform types in the world named after a specific region. Attraction highlights Yuanjiajie: Step into Pandora from Avatar Yuanjiajie served as the filming location for the "Hallelujah Mountains" in the movie Avatar. Here, you can explore the magical world of floating peaks scattered like stars across the landscape. If you're lucky enough to visit during a light rain or just after the rain clears, you'll witness the breathtaking scenery of mist-shrouded, layered mountain peaks. Mihun Terrace is the ideal vantage point, offering panoramic views of hundreds of towering stone peaks that create a majestic atmosphere. You can also see the renowned "World's First Bridge," a natural wonder spanning two mountains with a vertical drop of 357 meters. Tianzi Mountain: Where the Emperor's Return Makes Other Mountains Pale in Comparison Exploring Tianzi Mountain, you'll encounter extraordinary geological formations and peculiar peaks like the Imperial Writing Brush, Fairy Presenting Flowers, Commander's Platform, Sky-High Farmland, and Immortal Bridge. Don't focus too much on how closely these natural shapes resemble their names - the true charm lies in the mountain's "primordial natural beauty." The misty atmosphere after rainfall creates an ethereal fairyland experience, while winter transforms the landscape into an even more enchanting silver wonderland. Huangshi Village: Reach the summit for breathtaking mountain views "Without ascending Huangshi Village, your trip to Zhangjiajie is incomplete." Huangshi Village is a scenic viewpoint within Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, surrounded by sheer cliffs and lush greenery, with its summit often shrouded in mist. Reaching the top of Huangshi Village offers panoramic views that let you experience the majestic feeling of "seeing all other mountains appear small." Yangjiajie: Thrills Amidst the Peaks Yangjiajie is primarily known for its pristine natural beauty, featuring towering mountains and narrow paths that make it famous for its "perilous" reputation, beloved by backpackers and adventurers. Within the attraction, Black Dragon Village is one of Zhangjiajie's most magical spots. Once inhabited by bandits from western Hunan, it was later renamed after the TV series "The Suppression of Bandits in Black Dragon Mountain." The village is built along the mountainside, with only one path leading up and down—requiring visitors to use both hands and feet to climb to the summit. Suoxi Valley: Nature's Ink Wash Masterpiece Suoxi Valley, also known as Suoxi, gets its name from the rope-like shape of its winding streams. Unlike the more rugged areas of the forest park, this mist-shrouded valley features crystal-clear streams that flow year-round, surrounded by graceful peaks at every turn. The Ten Mile Gallery stands as the crown jewel of Suoxi Valley—a 5km-long canyon filled with fragrant wildflowers and extraordinary rock formations. Walking through this landscape feels like stepping into a living Chinese landscape painting. Golden Whip Stream: Filming Location of "Journey to the West" Golden Whip Stream Canyon is the earliest developed area in the attraction, where a crystal-clear stream flows through the valley flanked by towering peaks and lush greenery. This location served as one of the filming sites for the classic TV series "Journey to the West," allowing fans to visit iconic scenes like the Water Curtain Cave and the Mountain-Splitting Rescue.Zhangjiajie · 99.6km from Longshan

Fanjing Mountain is located in Tongren, northeastern Guizhou province, with an elevation of 2,572 m. As the highest peak of the Wuling Mountains, it is a member of the UNESCO "Man and Biosphere" program, a World Natural Heritage site, and a national 5A-level tourist attraction. The Mount Fanjing Biosphere Reserve covers a total area of 428.63 km². The mountain is characterized by its pristine wilderness, majestic peaks, layered ridges, crisscrossing streams, and cascading waterfalls. Its iconic attractions include the Red Clouds Golden Summit, Yuejing Mountain, the 10,000-meter Sleeping Buddha, Mushroom Rock, the Ten Thousand Scrolls of Scriptures, Jiulong Pool, and Phoenix Mountain. Mount fanjing was originally named "three valleys", derived from "pure land of brahma". The buddhism here originated in the tang dynasty and flourished in the ming dynasty, making it a historic buddhist mountain. Additionally, mount fanjing boasts abundant wildlife resources, including rare species such as the guizhou golden monkey and dove tree. Mount Fanjing is the main peak of the Wuling mountain range, located at the junction of Jiangkou, Yinjiang, and Songtao counties. With its massive and majestic form reaching into the clouds, it was revered as the ancestor of famous mountains as early as the beginning of the Ming dynasty and is a renowned Buddhist sacred site. Additionally, Mount Fanjing boasts vast areas for viewing red leaves. Every fall, the layered forests are dyed in vibrant hues, with the red leaves complementing the mountain temples. Here, you can take a cable car to overlook the endless stretches of red foliage or stroll along the mountain paths, surrounded by fiery red leaves on both sides and above. The red cloud golden summit is the core of Foshan. The two temples standing majestically on the peak, with two buddhas presiding, create an infinite dharma realm. This masterpiece of the Southern Song Dynasty's White Lotus Society in constructing a "pure land on earth" is a miracle in the history of Buddhist development on famous mountains. Take the sightseeing bus from the attraction entrance to the cableway, then ride the cableway up and walk straight to the top to see the famous "mushroom stone." True to its name, it has a large top and a small base, resembling a mushroom, standing approx. 10 m tall and having been on the mountain for 1 billion years. To the left of the mountaintop is the red golden cloud summit, and to the right is the old golden summit, both incredibly spectacular.China · Jiangkou

The Three Gorges Dam Tourism Area

The Three Gorges Dam Tourism Area is located in the Xiling Gorge section of the Yangtze River in Yichang, Hubei. It is a scenic attraction built around the Three Gorges hydro project, covering over ten square kilometers. Currently, it offers travelers three viewing spots: Tanzi Ridge, the 185 viewing platform, and the river closure memorial park. The dam crest itself is not open to travelers, so visits primarily revolve around these three attractions. Tanzi Ridge is the highest accessible point in the dam area, named for its jar-shaped summit viewing platform resembling an overturned jar. It also served as the survey site for the dam's initial location selection. From the ridge top, visitors can overlook the Three Gorges Project in its entirety—the dam, power station, and twin five-level ship locks are all visible. The five lock chambers cascade down the mountainside, earning the nickname "Fourth Gorge of the Yangtze." The park displays engineering artifacts like ancient riverbed stones, river closure rocks, and foundation stones from the dam site, complemented by model exhibits that help visitors intuitively understand the origins and development of this mega-project. The 185 observation platform is located on the left bank of the dam. It gets its name from sharing the same elevation of 185 m as the dam crest. Standing on the platform feels like being atop the dam: on one side, the dam and vertical ship lift are within close reach, offering a chance to witness ships "riding the elevator" over the dam; on the other side lies the vast, tranquil reservoir upstream. The stark contrast between the stillness above and the dynamism below the dam is striking. The closure memorial park is situated on the right bank downstream of the dam, preserving artifacts like tetrahedral closure stones and large loading machinery used during the construction. It's an ideal spot to view the dam's full frontal grandeur. During flood seasons when the dam releases water, torrents rush out from the deep outlets, creating towering mist and thunderous echoes that reverberate through the valley—a truly awe-inspiring spectacle. The three attractions are far apart, and the scenic area provides shuttle buses for transportation. It is recommended to reserve half a day to visit them in order.China · Yichang

If you've ever dreamed of reaching out to embrace drifting clouds and looking up to see a glimpse of stars, then Bamianshan, Longshan, Xiangxi, is a secret haven tailor-made for this fantasy. It boasts the impressive title of "China's Largest Table Mountain"—surrounded by razor-sharp cliffs. Standing on the edge and gazing down, clouds swirl in the valley, making it seem as if you're stepping on clouds. Turn around, and the summit reveals a completely different world: Thousands of acres of meadows, seemingly meticulously ironed, stretch from your eyes to the horizon, quietly transporting the vastness of the northern grasslands into the folds of the southern mountains. The four seasons here never disappoint. In spring, wildflowers blanket the mountain meadows like a colorful blanket. Dandelions, drenched in morning dew, lift tiny white umbrellas in the breeze, filling the air with a delicate floral fragrance. Summer is the most pleasurable, with a cool mountain breeze brushing against the grass tips. Even amidst the scorching heat below, the peak maintains a comfortable 20°C. Lying on the grass, watching the clouds roll by, can soothe even a restless heart. In autumn, the meadows are tinged with a gentle pale yellow, while wild strawberries and kiwis hide in the bushes. Picking one is a delightfully sweet and sour experience, plucked from the heart. Winter is even more captivating. After a snowfall, the meadows are blanketed in silver, rime drapes the branches, and the entire Bamashan Mountain transforms into a fairytale world of ice and snow. Walking through the snow, your feet crackle, and even your breath is shrouded in white mist. Bamashan offers surprises at every moment of the day. Be sure to rise early in the morning and find a slope with a wide view. First, the sky begins to turn pale, then the orange-red sunrise slowly emerges from the sea of clouds, tinting the clouds in golden red and orange-pink. The once gray meadow is instantly illuminated, and in that moment, it seems as if the entire world is ablaze. Nightfall is when Bamashan reaches its most romantic moment: free from the city's light pollution, the stars, like overturned diamonds, fill the night sky, and the Milky Way is so clear that a faint band of light can be seen. Stay in a starry sky tent on the mountaintop, unzip and gaze at the stars. Listen to the rustling of the wind across the meadow and the occasional barking of a herdsman's dog in the distance. This kind of tranquility and freedom, far from the hustle and bustle, is something you'll never find in the city. This place isn't just a place to enjoy the scenery; it's a paradise for fun. For a wild experience, rent a horse—the perspective from horseback is truly unique. As the meadow slowly recedes beneath you, the wind caresses your face, and you feel as if you've left all your worries behind. (But be aware that horseback riding is quite expensive, so be sure to ask for the price in advance.) In the evening, be sure to try the local roasted whole lamb: the rack is roasted to a golden brown, the fat dripping onto the charcoal with a sizzling aroma that wafts far into the distance. Tear off a piece of meat, the skin crispy on the outside, the meat tender on the inside. Paired with a glass of local rice wine, it's a truly divine experience. If the scenic area is hosting a tent music festival, the atmosphere becomes even more lively. A stage is set up in the center of the meadow, lights illuminate the night sky, and people from all corners of the world sing and dance to the music. Even strangers can join in the revelry, and the unbridled joy is something you'll remember for a long time.

Liye Ancient Town, located on the banks of the You River, is situated in the southern part of Longshan County, Xiangxi Prefecture, Hunan Province. The town boasts a long history and still retains its historical features, including ancient streets from the Ming and Qing dynasties and Tujia stilted buildings.

The Wulong Mountain Grand Canyon has pleasant scenery and beautiful landscapes. The Remi Cave is worth a visit and is very interesting. The naturally formed cave landscape is particularly eye-catching under the light and has a very high cost-effectiveness.

Hubei. Enshi Prefecture. Laifeng County. Guankou Village. Xianfo Temple Grottoes. Tang Dynasty Seven kilometers east of Laifeng County, on the Buddha Rock beside the Youshui River, there is a deep green pool in the river, with red rock walls standing beside the shore. The Xianfo Temple Grottoes are not only the only Tang Dynasty cliff carvings in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and the two lakes.

Luckily, the weather was good during my visit, and I had clear views of the beautiful canyon. The natural scenery was definitely the highlight.During my visit, only Route C was available for transportation in one direction. Fortunately, the organization was reasonable, and the queues were not too long. However, the attraction was extremely crowded despite it being a weekday, possibly due to the good weather. There are several different paths, which can make getting around confusing. The biggest drawback was the large number of tour groups. Some tourists showed little consideration or respect for others, making it difficult to enjoy the scenery peacefully. The atmosphere often felt chaotic, with people competing for space and access to attractions.Overall, the natural scenery is beautiful, but the excessive crowds, inconsiderate tour groups, and confusing routes affected the experience. Better crowd management would make this attraction much more enjoyable.

Having visited many mountain scenic areas, Fanjingshan is quite unique. Whether it's the Red Cloud Golden Summit or the Old Golden Summit, the paths are narrow and steep in some places, making it very exciting. I made a special trip during my holiday to experience it, and it was definitely worth the trip.

The scenic area is beautiful, and the water is stunning. The singing and toasting performances by local men and women on the Moke Covered Bridge are quite unique. Transportation within the scenic area is not necessary, as the journey is not long. Walking to the stilted houses offers a chance to enjoy the scenery along the way. The water is beautiful.
