Hamilton Gardens

4.8/5
62 reviews
Hamilton Gardensis situated on the banks of the Waikato River. It is not planned like a traditional botanical garden but is themed around "The story of gardens." It consists of five series—Paradise, Productive, Fantasy, Cultivar, and Landscape—linking nearly 20 independent themed gardens. From ancient Egyptian gardens 4,000 years ago to 21st-century conceptual gardens, it showcases how different civilizations have imagined and created their own paradise on earth. The Paradise series is a highlight of the garden: in the Chinese Scholar's Garden, a wisteria-covered bridge, Bird Island, and pavilions with red pillars and flying eaves are scattered and connected. Beside the pavilion stands a bronze turtle gifted by the city of Wuxi, China, and from the railing, you can see the Waikato River; the Japanese Garden of Meditation, Italian Renaissance Garden, English Flower Garden, and American Modernist Garden each recreate the gardening aesthetics of different eras; the Indian Char Bagh Garden uses symmetrical canals to divide the courtyard into four sections, with vibrant flower beds creating an effect like a Persian carpet. The Te Parapara Garden in the Productive series showcases the ancient agricultural practices of the Māori people in cultivating kūmara (sweet potato). Each garden is an enclosed, independent courtyard. Stepping through a gate often feels like entering a different world. It is best to slow down and explore them series by series. The garden also features a café, a souvenir shop, and a children's playground.Hamilton · 24.1km from Karapiro

Waitomo Glowworm Caves

The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are limestone caves in the western mountains of New Zealand's North Island, and a attraction. In Maori, Waitomo means "water flowing into a cave." The cave walls are dotted with layers of green lights, which shimmer on the dark water, creating a doubled interplay of light and shadow—a wondrous world of green sprites. 1.Firefly CaveIt mainly consists of three distinctive caves: the Waitomo Glowworm Caves,Ruakuri Cave and Alanuy CaveThe Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a limestone cave system over 10,000 years old. Originally, there was a small, frozen lake on the mountainside above the cave. As the snow melted, the water flowed into fissures in the rock below, gradually eroding the cave into what we see today. The Cathedral Cave within the Waitomo Glowworm Caves is a massive cave renowned for its acoustics.Ruakuri CaveThis place has a legendary underground cave where you can hear the sound of an underground waterfall.Aranui CaveThe entrance is the visitors center, and the arched membrane structure is quite impressive. 2. To tour the cave with thousands of fireflies, you'll need to take a small boat deep into the cave. Once seated, the guide will pull the boat forward using an overhead rope. The strange lights inside the cave are the glow of thousands of fireflies. You'll see patches of greenish-white light and shadow on the rocks. Look closely, and you'll see uneven, translucent filaments hanging from the cave ceiling. These filaments are adorned with crystal-clear water droplets, like a curtain of beads. These beautiful, slimy filaments are the fireflies' fishing tools, attracting and preying on insects drawn by the light.Waitomo Caves · 53.8km from Karapiro

While the meticulous set design, the stunning Waikato rolling hills, and finishing up with a drink at the Green Dragon Inn provide a genuinely charming afternoon, the ticket price and time commitment can certainly feel steep if you aren't emotionally invested in J.R.R. Tolkien's universe or Peter Jackson's films. For die-hard fans, it's an unforgettable pilgrimage, but for casual sightseers, New Zealand offers plenty of incredible natural landscapes that require no prior fandom to appreciate.

We had a short family weekend staycation here. Quaint town with many English styled buildings and dotted with cafes and retail shops. We feel a 2 to 3 days trip here would be sufficient but it can be a great pit stop area if you're heading to Matamata or Hamilton.

If you are passing by, I still recommend it. It condenses vegetation and architecture from different parts of the world into 20 small gardens with their own characteristics. It takes about an hour to wander around. The ticket office is at the gate. It costs 20 NZD per person.

The guide was so fun and knowledgeable, and everything went smoothly. It was all so beautiful and immersive — I felt completely drawn into the experience. The only downside was that there were no photos, but honestly, that was also one of the best parts! I was able to be fully present and really enjoy it.

Motorola's Blue Spring is definitely a breathtakingly beautiful place. There is a winding spring here that is sky blue and very clear. The water plants under the spring float with the flow of the stream, as if you have come to a fairyland. It is really intoxicating.

It is a pub in the Hobbiton scenic area. After completing the tour of the Hobbiton dwellings with the guide, you will stop here for a short time. Drinks can be provided "free of charge", including dark beer, yellow beer, cider and ginger beer. Although the name of ginger beer sounds like wine, it is actually a non-alcoholic beverage that minors can drink.
