Hulunbuir Grasslands

Hulun Buir Prairie is located in the west of Hulun Buir City, named after Hulun Lake and Bell Lake on the prairie. Every year from June to September is the tourist season of Hulunbuir Prairie, and self-driving is very suitable for holidays. Especially in July and August, the prairie is lush, suitable for horse riding, fishing, or boating on Hulun Lake in the west. There are performances such as wrestling, archery, horse set-up and singing and dancing bonfire parties in scenic spots such as Huhe Nuoer Grassland and Bayan Hushuo Grassland. You can also stay in yurts and experience grassland life. On the first few days of the fourth day of the sixth lunar month, you can also catch up with the grand Naadam Conference and experience the rich traditions on the grassland. When you come to Manzhouli in the northwest corner of the prairie, you can visit the Matryoshka Square. You can walk on Zhongsujin Street at night. The Russian neon lights on both sides make you feel like you are on the streets of Moscow. The weather in Hulunbuir was cold earlier, and the grass and leaves were turning yellow at the end of August. In the middle and late September, it is a good time to go to the forest area in the east of the prairie to see the red and yellow leaves. You can not only see the magnificent river valley in the Asian wetland - Genhe Wetland, but also go to the southern part of the prairie to enjoy the red and yellow leaves. The colorful forest colors of Huaerji Forest Park. The mutton produced in the Hulunbuir prairie is delicious and has no mutton taste, so you must try it. In Manzhouli, Labu Dalin, and Hailar, there are restaurants where you can eat mutton and barbecue, including authentic hand-baked meat, mutton, and fried mutton tails. If there are few people, you might as well ask for a roast leg of lamb. If there are many people, you can also taste the "whole sheep feast".Old Barag Banner · 42.7km from downtown
Mo'erdaoga National Forest Park

Mo'erdaoga National Forest Park

1.9k reviews
Mo'erdaoga National Forest Park is located deep in the pristine forests of the northern Greater Khingan Range. "Mo'erdaoga" means "warhorse setting off on a campaign" in Mongolian. Bordered by Hulunbuir Grassland to the south and the China-Russia border river Ergun to the north, it's one of China's larger forest parks. The park preserves intact cold-temperate bright coniferous virgin forests, primarily composed of Daurian larch as the dominant species, interspersed with birch and Mongolian pine groves. Known as the "hometown of larches," its forests are home to wildlife like red deer, roe deer, and squirrels, earning the saying "Xishuangbanna in the south, Mo'erdaoga in the north." Every fall, when larches turn yellow and birches golden, the forest transforms into autumn hues dominated by orange-red and gold—an ideal time to experience northern autumn charm. Near the entrance, visitors can board a forest sightseeing train with wooden carriages that slowly traverses nearly 10 km of tracks through the woods, stopping at stations like Pine melody in forest sea, Garden forest sea, Streamside woods, and Forest pasture, with the final stop offering access to Ewenki traditional dwellings called "cuoluozi" and close encounters with reindeer and sika deer. For self-drive or private charter tours along the scenic route deeper into the forest, attractions include Red bean slope, Dwarf pine path, Deer trail, Nine-ridge view, Hunter's path, Ice forest, and Ewenki reindeer tribe: Red bean slope features lingonberry shrubs (called "northern red beans") growing beneath pines, with edible berries and frequent squirrel activity; Nine-ridge view's mountaintop platform offers panoramic vistas to count distant ridges; Ice forest grows on permafrost glacial remnants where stunted, twisted larches covered in moss and lichen—nicknamed "old man trees"—create peculiar shapes. At the route's end, White deer island is formed by the swift-flowing Jiuliu River encircling two islets (Grey wolf and White deer) in an "S" shape, inspired by a Mongolian legend of wolf and deer transforming into islands. The islets' pine-dark and birch-orange foliage with abundant lingonberries create particularly vibrant fall colors favored by photographers, while nearby "Nine-bend pine wind" rafting along the Jiuliu River offers adventure. Additionally, the first bridge encountered upon entering was featured in scenes from the film The banquet—visitors may slow down to spot familiar cinematic views.Ergun · >100km from downtown

Several months have passed, and now I'm in Xinjiang. I've visited some more scenic spots, but when I think back to the Morigele Grassland in Hulunbuir, the winding, meandering river, the different viewpoints, the smooth scenic roads, and the scenery along the way are all unforgettable!

It's worth a visit. Take the mini-train first, then drive yourself. The day I went, it was cloudy in the forest, so the photos didn't turn out well, but the scenery was still quite nice. Because it was so cold, we didn't stop much along the way. The drive back to Moerdaoga Town from the exit is 37 kilometers, but the scenery along the way is also beautiful.

The Morigele River, described by Lao She as the "Number One Meandering River Under Heaven," is well worth a visit. It's divided into a south route and a north route. The south route is in better condition but requires taking a sightseeing bus. The third stop offers the best scenery, especially on a clear day. The Morigele River resembles a blue ribbon, winding its way across the vast grassland—it's truly beautiful.

I really enjoyed the grass skiing at Ribbon River. Taking a small electric cart up the mountain was much better than the bumpy train that took forever to get you there, and the scenery at the top was especially beautiful; I could easily spend a long time taking pictures.

Who says there's no sea on the grasslands?! Hulun Lake, a boundless lake like the sea, carries beautiful legends and the myths of Hulunbuir. A boat trip to feed the seagulls feels like being on the open ocean.

Highly recommend this natural scenic area! Although it got cold early this year, and the birch forest leaves had mostly fallen by October, the golden leaves scattered on the ground reflecting the sunlight were still incredibly beautiful. There were also many adorable chipmunks begging for food, and we left a wishing plaque. I can already imagine the beauty of midsummer and golden autumn; I'll definitely come back to experience it again!
