Chan Chan
The Chan Chan archaeological site is located in the South American country of Peru. It is a large adobe brick city established in the 12th century. Although considered a masterpiece of architecture in the Americas during the pre-Columbian era, it is, after all, an entirely earthen structure. Due to natural erosion and damage by treasure hunters in later generations, the existence of this historic city is now in jeopardy. The center of Chan Chan is the temple-like Tschudi Citadel, which features a council chamber that remains exceptionally well-preserved to this day. The 24 seats set into the earthen walls surrounding the rectangular courtyard look very much like a chamber for holding debates. The acoustics inside this chamber are extraordinary, and people sitting in different seats can be heard clearly even when speaking in low whispers. Some buildings, including this council chamber, are surrounded by defensive earthen walls. In addition, there are the Laberinto reservoir, some residential areas, and platforms for religious ceremonies.
