Giza Necropolis

9.6
4.7/5
708 reviews
The Giza Necropolis is not a single pyramid, but a collective term for a group of pyramids standing on the Giza Plateau, mostly built during the Fourth Dynasty of ancient Egypt around 2600 to 2500 BCE. The three great pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure are aligned from northeast to southwest, interspersed with queen pyramids and funerary structures, while the Great Sphinx lies to the east. Among the seven wonders of the ancient world, this necropolis is the only one that remains today. As for the alignment of the three pyramids, some speculate it corresponds to the three stars of Orion's Belt—though merely a conjecture, it adds a layer of imagination to the stone giants amidst the yellow sands. Upon entering the attraction, the first sight that greets travelers is usually the Pyramid of Khufu, whose massive scale far surpasses the other two. The remaining height of the pyramid is approx. 140 m. Today, travelers enter the pyramid through a passage on one side of its base, ascending along a dimly lit, low corridor to reach the pharaoh's granite burial chamber. Photography is prohibited inside the pyramid, and the narrow, stuffy passage poses a significant physical challenge. Nearby, the Pyramid of Khafre appears remarkably intact from a distance due to the preserved section of ancient limestone casing at its apex. Inside, the burial chamber is long empty, with only a vacant sarcophagus lying silently within. The smallest of the three, the Pyramid of Menkaure, features a low entrance—just a few stone steps lead into a downward-sloping passage. During your visit, consider heading to the panoramic attraction on the south side of the pyramid complex to capture all three pyramids in a single frame. The long-standing camel ride experience here is also worth trying—gazing back at the pyramids from the desert offers a quintessential view of this ancient plateau.Giza · 8.4km from downtown

The Egyptian Museum is the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East, and houses the largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities in the world. The museum displays an extensive collection spanning from the Predynastic Period to the Greco-Roman Era. The architect of the building was selected through an international competition in 1895, which was the first of its kind, and was won by the French architect, Marcel Dourgnon. The museum was inaugurated in 1902 by Khedive Abbas Helmy II, and has become a historic landmark in downtown Cairo, and home to some of the world's most magnificent ancient masterpieces. Among the museum's unrivaled collection are the complete burials of Yuya and Thuya, Psusennes I and the treasures of Tanis, and the Narmer Palette commemorating the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under one king, which is also among the museum's invaluable artifacts. The museum also houses the splendid statues of the great kings Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, the builders of the pyramids at the Giza plateau. An extensive collection of papyri, sarcophagi and jewelry, among other objects, completes this uniquely expansive museum.Cairo · 4.6km from Giza

Grand Egyptian Museum

The Grand Egyptian Museum is located on the Giza Plateau, approximately two km from the pyramid complex. After over two decades of preparation and construction, it officially opened fully in November 2025. Designed by Heneghan Peng Architects, the museum's layout features several visual axes echoing the three pyramids. Its semi-translucent alabaster facade, adorned with triangular patterns, glows with warm desert-like tones under daylight and illuminates at night, resembling a massive stone carved from the sea of sand—earning it the nickname "the fourth pyramid of Egypt." The museum houses over 100,000 artifacts spanning from the Predynastic Period to the Greco-Roman era. Upon entering the grand hall, travelers are greeted by the towering granite statue of Ramses II, dating back over 3,000 years. In the entrance courtyard, an obelisk is suspended mid-air, allowing passage beneath. Flanking the six-tiered central staircase are dozens of statues of pharaohs and queens, leading upward to a glass wall framing the distant pyramids—a classic photo spot. The Tutankhamun gallery is the highlight, showcasing over 5,000 burial treasures, with the golden mask displayed centrally. The restored Khufu Solar Boat also resides here. A dedicated children's museum offers an engaging introduction to ancient Egyptian civilization. Given the vast scale and dense attractions, allocate at least half a day: start with the staircase's pyramid vista, then explore the Tutankhamun gallery and solar boat exhibit. At dusk, the alabaster facade shimmers under sunset hues—a photo moment many travelers plan for.Giza · 8.9km from downtown

Khan el-Khalili is a famous open-air market in Cairo, dating back to the Mamluk era in the 14th century. It was built by the then-emir Djaharkas el-Khalili on the site of a Fatimid royal tomb, from which the market takes its name. Located in the heart of Islamic Cairo, it remains a popular shopping area for both locals and tourists from around the world. As you walk through the market, the narrow alleys are lined with shops selling gold and silver jewelry, copperware, spices, perfumes, and souvenirs. The market preserves stone gates left from the reconstruction by Sultan al-Ghuri in the early 16th century. The intricate Mamluk-style stone carvings on the gates are a direct testament to the market's historical heritage. Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz once used an alley in the market as the setting for his novel, adding a layer of literary depth to the place. Vendors enthusiastically solicit customers, and the sounds of trading fill the air. Even if you don't plan on shopping, wandering between the historic buildings and small shops, soaking in the aroma of spices and the buzz of voices, is a unique experience in itself.Cairo · 6.4km from Giza

The Great Pyramid of Giza, built as the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu during the Fourth Dynasty of ancient Egypt, is one of the larger and taller Egyptian pyramids. This pyramid was constructed approx. 2580 BCE. It is not only a symbol of Egypt but also the oldest structure among the seven wonders of the ancient world. Pyramids exterior To visit here, you must first enter the Giza pyramid complex. Upon entering, the first sight is this pyramid, which remains one of the best-preserved to date.Sponsored Ads, although the top has weathered over time, it remains a massive structure equivalent to a 40-story building. From a distance,Sponsored AdsEach side forms an isosceles triangle, and the entire pyramid is constructed with 2.3 million massive stone blocks. Pyramids interior Of course, besides admiring its massive exterior, travelers can also explore the interior. Although ventilation has been installed inside the pyramid, the narrow burial passages remain quite stuffy, so those in poor health are advised to proceed with caution. Sponsored AdsThe tomb entrance is at a height of 18 m above the ground, facing the Big Dipper. Photography is prohibited inside, and the passageway is illuminated by lights. After entering, stepping on the steep wooden stairs, you can imagine ancient Egyptians carrying the pharaoh's sarcophagus upward along the passageway to place it inSponsored Adsin the secret chamber. Walking step by step along the corridor inside the pyramid, your footsteps grow heavier, and the air feels increasingly stifling, until you reach the pharaoh's secret chamber. The chamber is a small room built of granite, standing 42.28 m vertically above the ground. For many years, people believed the pyramid concealed the pharaoh's treasures and mummy. But when archaeologists entered in 1881, they found only an empty sarcophagus in the central burial chamber. In the pharaoh's chamber, an open dark red granite sarcophagus can be seen placed in the center. The pharaoh's treasures were long ago looted, leaving only this empty coffin that was too heavy to move. After the exploration, walk slowly back along the original path. Emerging from the dark, enclosed passageway and returning to the open, bright desert landscape, the stark contrast in light and space creates a wondrous feeling of having lived through another lifetime, allowing you to truly grasp the awe and vicissitudes of this thousand-year-old stone miracle.Giza · 8.1km from downtown

Coptic Cairo is situated on the ruins of the Babylon Fortress, built during the Roman period, and serves as the historical heart of Coptic Christianity in Egypt. Although the area is compact, it is densely packed with several ancient churches, a synagogue, and Coptic Museum, all of which can be easily visited on foot. The Hanging Church within the area is built above the gatehouse of the Babylon Fortress's south gate, with its nave suspended over the passageway, hence its name. The Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus (Abu Serga) is said to be built over the cave where the Holy Family took refuge when they fled to Egypt; visitors can descend into the crypt, which is an important site for Christian pilgrimage. The Church of St. Barbara is renowned for its ancient icons and the relics of Saint Barbara. In addition to the cluster of churches, the Ben Ezra Synagogue is also located here. It is one of the oldest surviving synagogues in Cairo and, together with the surrounding churches, bears witness to the unique history of religious coexistence in this area. Coptic Museum houses a vast collection of early Christian art treasures, including textiles, icons, manuscripts, and stone carvings, making it an essential place for understanding Coptic art. The area's deep, stone-paved alleyways are dotted with old book stalls and small souvenir shops, and strolling through them offers an atmosphere quite distinct from other parts of Cairo.Cairo · 2.5km from Giza

Great Sphinx of Giza

743 reviews
Great Sphinx of Giza is an iconic stone sculpture in the Giza Necropolis, located to the east of the Pyramid of Khafre, and carved in situ from a single block of natural limestone. The entire statue is approx. 70 m long and approx. 20 m high, featuring the body of a lion and the face of a human. It is believed to have been built during the reign of the ancient Egyptian Pharaoh Khafre, dating back approx. 4,500 years. The statue originally wore a striped headdress, was adorned with a uraeus on the forehead, and featured a ceremonial pharaonic beard on the chin. However, after thousands of years of wind erosion and burial by sand, most of these details have been damaged or lost. The missing nose is particularly striking, becoming a highly recognizable feature today. Between the two front paws stands the Dream Stele, placed by the ancient Egyptian Pharaoh Thutmose IV. The inscription records the legend of him receiving divine revelation in a dream at the foot of the statue before ascending to the throne, which is also one of the important clues for scholars to link the Great Sphinx of Giza with Pharaoh Khafre.Giza · 8km from downtown

Cairo Citadel, also known as theCairo Citadel, is located on Mokattam Hill in the eastern suburbs of Cairo. It is a military fortress built by Saladin in the 12th century to defend against the Crusaders. The citadel stands majestically on the hilltop in a strategic location and is divided into two sections: the north, which historically housed the garrison, and the south, which served as the palace for successive rulers. Over the following centuries, rulers from the Ayyubid, Mamluk, and Ottoman dynasties continuously expanded and renovated the site, leaving behind layers of historical imprints within the citadel. There are many historical sites worth seeing within the citadel. The Well of Joseph is a structure from the Saladin era, and the accompanying ancient aqueduct, whichbrought water from the Nile to the mountain, demonstrates the hydraulic wisdom of medieval Cairo. TheNational Military Museumin the north section was originally a royal palace before being converted into a museum, displaying military collections such as uniforms and medals. Ancient stone pillars and architectural fragments are scattered throughout the citadel gardens, which themselves serve as an open-air exhibition. There are many attractions within the citadel, and you can explore the architectural ruins from different periods by following the route. Islamic Cairo is the medieval heart of Cairo. Since the Fatimid period, the area has been continuously built up through the Ayyubid, Mamluk, and Ottoman eras, with mosques, religious schools, caravanserais, and old residences lining the streets. Unlike many preserved historic districts, the monuments here remain interwoven with residents' daily lives—prayer, trade, and social visits all take place among buildings that are hundreds of years old. It is a genuinely living old city with a character completely different from modern Cairo nearby. Exploring centers on Al-Muizz Street, which runs through the old city. Walk from the northern Bab al-Futuh to the southern Bab Zuweila, passing Fatimid-era city gates, the Ottoman-style Suhaymi House, and stretches of Mamluk architecture. In the southern section, on one side the Al-Azhar Mosque was founded around 970 CE, and its affiliated institution remains one of the oldest centers of Islamic learning today. On the other side, the lanes of the Khan el-Khalili bazaar are densely packed with shops selling copper lamps, spices, perfumes, and shisha. The old city is mainly pedestrian, and the main street restricts motor vehicles during the day. Walking from the northern gate through the bazaar and then toward Al-Azhar, allow half a day to a full day to explore at a relaxed pace. You must remove your shoes to enter mosques, and clothing should cover shoulders and knees. Women should bring a headscarf. The market and narrow alleys are crowded, so keep an eye on your belongings. Look up for the honeycomb-like muqarnas and openwork stone carvings on the entrance portals, as these details are what make the old city's architecture so captivating.Cairo · 7.9km from Giza

A must-visit place in this lifetime. Compared to other places, there are far fewer scammers. Many ancient artifacts, including mummies, are on display. Tutankhamun's mask is inside the museum, but photography is not allowed. The enormous statues are truly awe-inspiring.

It's definitely worth a visit. Luckily, President Xi Jinping and his wife had just visited the museum the day before, and I even got to take a picture at the spot where the leaders took photos (with the two pyramids in the background)! The only downside was that it was incredibly crowded (apparently, the museum was closed the day before due to the leaders' visit). By viewing the artifacts on display, I learned about the civilization of ancient Egypt and the magnificent architecture of that era.

At that time, on the way from Luxor to Hurghada, I began to miss the Nile River infinitely. Every time I saw the river, I couldn't help but marvel in my heart. It was just a natural scenery, but it had an unreal beauty, flat and vast. I always lived in southern China and always thought that rivers came from valleys, magnificent or winding, with mountains on both sides, but the Nile River was still flat on both sides. I think there would be no Egypt without the Nile River. In such a hot and dry place that is not suitable for living, it should be this river that can pass through thousands of years without changing and keep people. Now, I have been away from Egypt for more than ten days. The most frequent flash in my memory is still the Nile River. Its beauty seems to allow anything to happen. I suddenly understand Agatha very much. If you face such a miracle every day, it is not surprising that you can write any story. Finally, I actually want to say that the Old Falls Hotel is worth staying (if the budget allows, but the afternoon tea is very bad, so be careful.

In Cairo, mosques and minarets are ubiquitous buildings. In Arabic, minarets are called "minars," which refer to the place where the muezzin stands to call people to prayer. Since the 7th century, with the widespread spread of Islam in West Asia and North Africa, the art of mosque architecture has continued to develop, and minarets have evolved into various styles, becoming an indispensable part of mosque architecture and a highlight of Cairo.

This land is not rich in amazing culture as people imagine, nor is there a famous attraction like the pyramids (maybe there was, but now it is gone). The whole city is full of dust, homeless people who love to fight and cause trouble, and endless dirtiness, chaos and poor conditions. Probably the best thing you can experience here is to take a good shower after a day in Cairo, and hope that you are not infected with any diseases. In the local area, many people will use tricks to cheat money on the streets, which makes tourists have a worse impression of the city. In addition, some people will shout behind you to provoke you. In this case, even if you give me money, I will never look back.
