Maoming Open-Pit Mine Ecological Park.
Transformed from the largest oil shale open-pit mine in southern China, this is a free, open-access ecological and industrial culture park.
Oil shale mining began in 1958 and ceased in 1992. Restoration began in 2014. Covering 10.07 square kilometers, with the core Haoxin Lake covering approximately 6.8 square kilometers, the park features an open-pit mine museum, a 20-kilometer lakeside greenway, and large areas of restored forest.
Haoxin Lake: The lake water is a vibrant blue, incredibly photogenic on sunny days, and ideal for cycling, hiking, and camping. You can rent electric bikes or bicycles to explore the lake. While the scenery is beautiful on sunny days, it can be very sunny. Today, it was a cloudy day, so the scenery wasn't as stunning, but the gentle breeze made it very comfortable.
Mining Relics: Equipment such as electric shovels and ore carts are preserved. The museum offers free information on the history of oil shale mining.
Ecological Landscape: In spring, the golden trumpet trees bloom, attracting birds and serving as a model of ecological restoration.
It's free all day, but the museum has closed days. Inside the park, you can buy tickets to take a miniature train around the lake. There are buses that go there, but they take a long time, so taking a taxi is more convenient.
