Fisherman's Bastion

4.7/5
654 reviews
Fisherman's Bastion is located on Castle Hill on the Buda side. It is a fortress named in honor of the fishermen who once defended the Danube River. Along with the Hungarian Parliament Building and the Hungarian National Opera, it is considered one of the three most impressive buildings in Hungary and is also a viewpoint overlooking the Danube River and the Pest district. Historical background Fisherman's Bastion stands on the banks of the Danube River, adjacent to Matthias Church. Construction began in 1895, with the main structure completed in 1902. This two-story, greyish-white building centers around a white spire in the Neo-Romanesque style, which, along with several surrounding round towers, represents the ancestral tribes of Hungary. The towers are connected by colonnades, creating a labyrinthine effect. Several bronze statues atop Fisherman's Bastion are also noteworthy, the most famous being an equestrian statue of a Hungarian king, erected in 1906 and located between Matthias Church and Fisherman's Bastion. The reliefs on its base depict the king's life story. Guided tour Fisherman's Bastion features numerous steps and walkways, offering scenic views as you ascend. It also boasts several observation decks on its towers. Even in windy or rainy weather, the arched corridors of these towers provide excellent shelter from the rain and heat, and you can rest on the benches within the corridors if you get tired. Overlooking the scenery Standing atop Fisherman's Bastion, you can enjoy breathtaking views that even the top of Castle Hill cannot fully capture: the Danube River, Margrethe Island, the Chain Bridge, the Hungarian Parliament Building, and Liberty Hill are all within sight. Fisherman's Bastion also possesses a unique charm at night, with everything around it appearing exceptionally enchanting under special lighting. Street performers playing music on the platform add to the ambiance, making it a truly romantic place to enjoy the night view; you'll often see many couple on dates here. The restaurant of the same name, Fisherman's Bastion, has seats in both the north and south corridors of Fisherman's Bastion, offering a very pleasant dining environment. The restaurant also has a terrace in the tower, where you can enjoy coffee while taking in the beautiful merchandise scenery, which is a delightful experience.Budapest · 38.6km from Esztergom

Hungarian Parliament Building

4.6/5

The Hungarian Parliament Building is located on the banks of the Danube in Budapest, serving as the seat of the National Assembly of Hungary and a grand landmark of the country. Designed by architect Imre Steindl, construction began in 1885 and took nearly twenty years to complete. The building features a Neo-Gothic style, with its central dome standing 96 m high—a number echoing the year 896 when Hungarians settled in the Carpathian Basin. The entire structure stretches along the Danube, its symmetrical façade adorned with approx. 90 stone statues of Hungarian rulers and military figures throughout history, with the coats of arms of kings and dukes carved above the window lintels. The building houses nearly 700 rooms, 10 courtyards, and over 20 doorways, with a total staircase length of approx. 20 km. The core highlights of the visit include the ornate grand staircase, the domed hall, and the former upper house chamber. The domed hall displays the Holy Crown of Hungary and coronation regalia, guarded by royal guards, and is a focal point of great attention in the entire building. The grand staircase is decorated with gilded railings, stained glass windows, and marble columns; climbing the steps offers a panoramic view of Kossuth Square. The walls of the former upper house hall hang a massive oil painting by Hungarian painter Mihály Munkácsy, depicting the historic scene of Hungarians entering the Carpathian Basin. In addition, portraits of historical figures and murals depicting major historical events can be seen throughout the building's interior, and the ceiling features a large ceiling painting created by Károly Lotz.Budapest · 38.6km from Esztergom

Széchenyi Thermal Bath

Budapest is known as one of the few spa cities in Europe, with a bathing tradition dating back over two thousand years to the Roman era. The Széchenyi Thermal Bath, located in the city park, is a representative of this tradition. Built and opened in 1913, the pale yellow neo-baroque palace surrounds the outdoor pools, where the steaming water contrasts with the classical facade, creating a highly recognizable landmark in the park. The thermal water here is sourced from deep geothermal wells, with high temperatures and rich in various minerals, making it one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The bathhouse consists of three outdoor pools and over a dozen indoor pools: the outdoor area features a hot spring sitting pool, an experience pool with a circular whirlpool flow, and a standard swimming pool, while the indoor side houses pools of varying temperatures along with sauna rooms and steam chambers. In the outdoor hot spring pools, it's common to see chess enthusiasts floating boards on the water and playing games while half-submerged in the warm water—a scene that has persisted for years and draws many travelers specifically to witness this classic sight. Even in winter, the outdoor pools remain steamy, with the chilly air outside contrasting the mist rising from the water's surface, making for a uniquely soothing soak in the snow. As night falls, the interplay of lights and steam creates an equally delightful atmosphere for an evening dip. Swimwear is required for entry. Towels, slippers, and swim caps can be rented on-site, and swim caps are usually required in the pool area. Weekends and daytime tend to be crowded, so those seeking a quieter experience may opt for early morning or evening visits. Subway line 1 has a station right in front of the bathhouse, making it very convenient to reach from downtown.Budapest · 39.3km from Esztergom

Esztergom Basilica is Hungarian, which means Esztergom Basilica in Chinese. This church is not simple. Although it is located in the small town of Esztergom, it is the largest church in Hungary, the second largest in Europe, and the fourth largest in the world. The king of Hungary was crowned here. You can climb up the huge dome of the church to overlook the Danube River not far away.

A night cruise on the Danube River is a must-do in Budapest! As night falls, the buildings on both banks light up with golden lights, transforming the city into a fairytale. ✨ This time, I chose a night cruise with Legenda City Cruises (the pier is at Dock 7). The cruise offers audio guides in 30 languages, allowing you to enjoy the evening breeze while listening to the narration – a truly immersive experience! 📍 Highlights: The cruise route passes by the stunning Hungarian Parliament Building (its golden splendor is breathtaking!), as well as iconic landmarks like the Chain Bridge. There are several cruise options available: Daytime Cruises, Evening Cruises, and Candlelit Dinner Cruises. If you're going at night, I highly recommend the Evening Cruise for the best night views! 💡 Tips: 1. The river breeze can be quite strong at night, so remember to bring a jacket. 2. For the best photos, stand on the open deck at the bow or by the window – the results will be amazing!

#St. Stephen's Basilica | A Sacred Place You Can't Miss in Budapest ⛪️ The most moving stop on any trip to Budapest is St. Stephen's Basilica. This basilica, which took 54 years to complete, boasts a 96-meter-high dome, the same height as the Parliament Building, symbolizing the balance between faith and secular life. Stepping into the basilica, you're greeted by gilded murals and exquisite marble sculptures. Sunlight streams gently through the stained-glass windows, creating a serene and solemn atmosphere. The basilica houses Hungary's national treasure—the Holy Right Hand of St. Stephen, the founding king, a relic spanning a millennium, silently narrating the origins and history of the nation. Be sure to buy a ticket to ascend the dome observation deck for a 360° panoramic view of the entire city. The Danube River meanders through the landscape, and the Chain Bridge, the Parliament Building, and the sea of red rooftops are all within sight. Climbing to the top at sunset, with the entire city bathed in the glow of the setting sun, is a uniquely romantic experience in Budapest. The spacious square in front of the basilica is very pleasant; after a long day of exploring, you can sit at a street-side café and quietly admire this magnificent building. If you're lucky, you can also attend a world-class organ concert and immerse yourself in the city's unique artistic charm. When you come to Budapest, don't just rush through; step inside St. Stephen's Basilica and understand the city's faith and gentleness. #HungaryTravel #BudapestCheckIn
