[Hida Takayama] Preserves the complete form of castle towns and merchant districts since the Edo period, exuding a rich atmosphere of Japanese cultural heritage, earning it the nickname "Little Kyoto of Hida." Strolling through Takayama's ancient streets, you'll find waterways flowing beneath latticed eaves, sake brewery signs—known as "sakabayashi," made from hinoki leaves hanging beneath the lattice—along with grand gates of machiya townhouses and noren curtains adorning the eaves of old shops. The streets are brimming with Edo-period charm, creating an immersive ambiance.
Takayama jinya was originally built in 1615, boasting a 400-year history. While most existing structures are later reconstructions replicating the original design, from the Meiji period onward, it was successively used as a prefectural office, county office, and government branch. The lanterns flanking the main gate and the curtains of the main building are adorned with the triple hollyhock crest, indicating this was a direct territory of the Tokugawa shogunate - the crest being the Tokugawa family emblem.
Takayama sanmachi The well-preserved historic streets from the Edo period - Sanmachi old street, has been designated as a Japanese national "important traditional buildings preservation district". It mainly refers to the collective name of three commercial streets: Ichino-machi, Nino-machi and Sanno-machi. The area features many old houses, shops, cafes and other distinctive stores, perfect for leisurely exploration.
Shiroyama tenshukaku observation deck, also known as "Ogimachi Castle Ruins Observation Deck", is a viewpoint for overlooking the panoramic view of the world heritage "Gassho-style village". It offers a 360-degree view of the magnificent scenery of Shirakawa-go's gassho-style houses and surrounding mountains, with winter snowscapes being particularly dreamy.
[Shirakawa-go's Gassho village] is renowned as a historic Japanese landscape for its beautiful natural scenery and unparalleled cultural views. Its unique "gassho-zukuri" architecture was designated as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1995.
The gassho-zukuri is an ancient Japanese architectural style characterized by steeply pitched thatched roofs resembling hands in prayer. The steep roof angle allows snow to slide off naturally in Shirakawa-go, an area with heavy snowfall. Today, these gassho-zukuri houses serve both as exhibition halls for visitors and as ordinary residential dwellings.
