Itinerary
This is not a bus tour or a quick photo stop. It's a real hike to Iceland's most active eruption zone: Fagradalsfjall, where new lava flowed as recently as July 2025.

Located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, just 50 minutes from Reykjavík, this experience takes you through dramatic black lava fields, steaming ground, and scenic viewpoints shaped by multiple eruptions since 2021.

Your guide is not just a driver. All our guides are real locals from Grindavík and Keflavík, with direct experience of the eruption and deep knowledge of the area. They've been here since the first eruption, helping visitors safely explore this unique landscape—and sharing stories from life next to an active volcano.

Why choose this tour?
• Small group experience – no buses, no crowds
• Local guides only – born and raised in the area
• Walk through fresh lava fields and learn real eruption science
• Walking poles available if needed
• Surprises along the way – every day is different
• One reviewer wrote: “Small group of people so you feel this hike is really for you (not a ‘mass event' where you're one of many Lemmings).”
• Another said: “Like being in Lord of the Rings, crossing Gorgoroth… luckily no Orcs!”

Hiking Details:
• Distance: ~8 km (round trip). May vary depending on weather conditions
• Elevation gain: ~300 m (moderate level)
• Walking time: up to 4 hours, adjusted to group pace

Self-drive Option – plan up to ~4 hours
Includes:
• Meet your guide in Grindavík at 10:45

Pickup Option – up to ~6 hours
Includes:
• Return transfer from Reykjavík
• Grindavík fishing village (drive-through intro)
• Guided volcano hike
Extra stops (only during summer or good weather):
• Seltún geothermal area
• Kleifarvatn Lake

This tour is perfect for geology lovers, photographers, families, and anyone curious to walk on Iceland's newest land with someone who actually lived through the eruptions.

All images shown are from real tours. Some show glowing lava. Others don't. Why? Because eruptions are unpredictable and can pause at any time. When eruptions happen and access is safe, we adjust the route to include the best viewing point. When there's no visible activity, we focus on the most dramatic lava fields and scenic craters.

Red lava is never guaranteed. But every tour is unique.

Please read all details before booking to avoid misunderstandings.
Stops at Kleifarvatn and Seltún may not be accessible in winter if roads are closed due to snow or ice. Routes and timing may change due to weather or volcanic conditions. Tour prices reflect Iceland's high operating costs and include licensed local guides, safety planning, and expert support to give you the best possible experience.
