From Coimbra: Sanctuary of Fátima, Batalha, and Nazaré

On this tour, we'll hit the most popular spots southwest of Coimbra. You'll visit the Sanctuary of Fatima, the UNESCO-listed Batalha Monastery, and the picturesque fishing village of Nazaré.

The Sanctuary of Fátima is, par excellence, a place of Christian pilgrimage and Catholic devotion, preserving the memory of the events that led to its foundation, namely the apparitions of Our Lady of Fátima to the three little shepherds, Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta in 1917. We'll head to Aljustrel, to the so-called Aldeia de Valinhos, where the little shepherds lived. At the Sanctuary, we'll visit the Basilicas of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Holy Trinity (the most recent), and the Chapel of the Apparitions, where, with a bit of luck, you'll have the chance to attend a mass.

We'll then head to Batalha to visit the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, better known as the Monastery of Batalha. Imposing, it stands out for its monumentality and the lacy stonework on the outside, which makes it easily identifiable. It's made up of a church, two cloisters, two royal pantheons, the Founder's Chapel, and the Unfinished Chapels.


After Batalha, we'll head towards the sea, to the village of Nazaré, where we'll start our visits at the Sanctuary, the Sítio, and the northern beach to see the waves, and we'll end up in the labyrinthine and narrow streets of the village.

We'll head back to the starting point, Coimbra, at a time to be agreed upon.
