Day 1Starting in Edinburgh, you’ll head south through the Scottish Borders, taking in the stunning rolling landscape of the Galloway Hills and Southern Uplands until you reach your first stop of the day, the Victorian spa town of Moffat. From Moffat you continue south across the border into England to the historic Cumbrian market town of Penrith. Here you have the opportunity to enjoy Lunch and explore the spectacular ruins of Penrith Castle. This distinctively coloured castle played a key role in defending the country from invading Standard Price. After Lunch we enter the Lake District National Park and drive along the northern shore of Ullswater, one of England's most beautiful lakes, where we offer you the opportunity to hike through the forest and see the spectacular Aira Force waterfall. You'll then travel to Keswick, stopping just outside the town to visit the mysterious Castlerigg standing stones, believed to have been built over 5,000 years ago and once a bustling centre of ancient pagan ritual. You will be transferred to your accommodation in the lively market town of Keswick and have time to explore this charming town. Day 2After Breakfast we head along country roads to the southern shore of Lake Uswater. Continue south through the narrow, winding Kirkstone Pass to scenic Lake Windermere, where you can choose to take a leisurely boat cruise on the lake or have Lunch while enjoying the surrounding scenery. After Lunch, you'll skirt the southern end of Lake Windermere, heading for Coniston Water. Your next stop is the picturesque conservation village of Hawkshead, site of the grammar school attended by poet William Wordsworth. After exploring this cosy village, you'll head north along country roads to Grasmere, which Wordsworth once described as "the loveliest place ever discovered by man". You have free time to visit Wordsworth's Dove Cottage, taste the legendary gingerbread, or enjoy the peace and quiet of Wordsworth Daffodil Garden beside the River Rothy. You'll return to Keswick in the evening. 3rd dayWe will pick you up at your accommodation and head towards Whinlatter Forest Park, crossing Whinlatter Pass and into the dramatic landscapes the Lake District has to offer. You'll follow winding roads through the village of High Lorton, past the shores of Crummock Water and Buttermere, towards Honister Mountain Pass. While stopping in the mountains you have the opportunity to visit an ancient slate workshop where a handful of Standard Price still earn their living. After the break you'll walk through Borrowdale Forest and past Derwent Water, where you'll have free time for Lunch and shopping. After Lunch you begin your return journey towards Penrith and then north back towards the border. After crossing the Scottish border you will stop in the town of Biggar, a royal burgh since 1415. From here we will take an easy drive back to Edinburgh through the undulating hills of the Borders.
