Leaving Edinburgh you head west, passing Stirling Castle to your first stop, Doune Castle*. The castle was built over 600 years ago and is still in great condition. You will have time to tour the castle. If you are a fan of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Fugitive or Standard Price series, you can learn about the castle's history as a filming location. You then continue through Callander and cross the Highland Boundary Fault Line, leaving the rolling farmland and entering the wild hills and forests of the Highlands. You'll stop briefly at Loch Lubnaig before crossing the Braes of Balquhidder. From Balquhidder, the journey passes through the rugged mountain range known as Breadalbane (meaning "the Highlands of Scotland"). Before Lunch you will have a photo stop to admire Kilchurn Castle, a stunning ruin set on the edge of Loch Awe and once home to the Campbells of Breadalbane. You'll travel along the shores of Loch Awe through the Campbell family estates to the picturesque town of Inveraray on the shores of Loch Fyne. Here you can admire the 18th-century castle (open from April to October), stroll through the town, or visit the old prison**. Leaving Inveraray you'll drive through the steep mountains known as the Arrochar Alps to the 'Rest and Be Thankful' lookout. Next, you'll skirt Loch Long to the 'beautiful shores' of Loch Lomond, stopping briefly in the conservation village of Luss to stroll through its fine houses and spectacular views across the loch. From here, you'll return to Edinburgh, arriving in the capital in the early evening. *Please note that Doune Castle will be closed from 8 January to 18 February 2024. During this period we will be taking you to visit Stirling Castle instead. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. **As Inveraray Castle may be closed at times, please check its website for availability.
