Among them, the most famous are the eight great hell springs of Beppu: Umi jigoku (sea hell), Oniishibozu jigoku (demon stone monk hell), Yama jigoku (mountain hell), Kamado jigoku (hearth hell), Oniyama jigoku (demon mountain hell), Shiraike jigoku (white pond hell), Chinoike jigoku (blood pond hell), and Tatsumaki jigoku (tornado hell). Kamado jigoku is one of these. It is said that since ancient times, during the biannual festivals of the local shrine Kamado Hachiman, food offerings were prepared using the heat from this hellish spring, giving rise to the name 'hearth hell'. With violent steam jets and boiling hot springs reaching 90Ā°C, it truly lives up to its hellish reputation."
