Your day trip to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula from Reykjavik begins with a morning Transfers. We Transfers from dozens of locations in the city center area. Alternatively, you can choose to come to our Meeting point in the city center to save money. Once your group has gathered, we'll leave the City and head north along Route 1 before turning west towards the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The adventure begins here! Berserkjahraun lava fieldsSnæfellsnes is a volcanic region. The Snæfellsjökull glacier actually sits on top of a stratovolcano. The peninsula is dotted with Other volcanoes. An eruption 4,000 years ago formed our first stop of the day, the Berserker Hallauen lava field. In addition to the mossy rocks, the eruption also formed the boulder craters Rauðkúla and Grákúla. This odd place name comes from the Eyrbyggja Saga, which tells of two Swedish berserkers (or Viking warriors) who were betrayed and murdered after they cleared a path through a lava field for an Icelandic farmer. Folklore often develops to explain odd geological features like this one. Mt. Kirkjufell &amp; Kirkjufellsfoss waterfallKirkjufell is perhaps the most photographed mountain in the country and is synonymous with the entire region. Located near the town of Grundarfjörður, this distinctive arrow-shaped peak is only 463 meters high, but looks even more impressive because it seems to penetrate the surrounding flat landscape. Kirkjufell means church mountain in Icelandic, although the exact reason for this is unknown. Kirkjufell is the most photographed mountain in Iceland and it's easy to see why. The classic shot is to photograph this distant peak against the backdrop of Kirkjufells waterfall and the mountain's reflection in the lake. A well-maintained trail leading to the waterfall enables you to capture this picture-perfect shot. In Game of Thrones, a snowy Kirk Uffel appears in a season seven episode, where our hero Jon Snow explores to find evidence of the monster's existence. Snæfellsjökull National ParkSnæfellsjokull National Park is a protected environment centered around the Snæfellsjokull glacier and volcano. Located at the western tip of the peninsula, the snowy whiteness of this glacier can be seen from Faxaflóa Bay in Reykjavík on a clear day. At least that’s where the entrance to the center of the Earth lies, in the imagination of legendary French science fiction writer Jules Verne. In his seminal novel, Journey to the Center of the Earth, the characters descend down this inactive volcano, confronting the dangers and creatures that lie deep underground. Some of our next stops were also part of the National Park. Djúpalónssandur Black Sand BeachOur next stop in the national park was the volcanic black sand beach of Dupalo Enchadu. Like all black sand beaches, the dramatic color of the sand comes from an ancient volcanic eruption when hot lava entered the ocean. Eventually the ocean eroded this volcanic material, leaving behind the black sand we see today. This beach is also surrounded by interesting lava formations. For centuries, the coastline here has been fished by local and foreign trawlers. The lost fishing village of Dritvík was once an important regional centre. Local fishermen would test their strength here by lifting stones of varying weights. Potential fishermen who wanted to get a spot on the boat needed to lift a 54kg stone. There were three Other stones you could try; Amlóði (useless) was 23kg, Hálfsterkur (half strength) was 100kg, and Fullsterkur (full strength) was 154kg. The wreck of a fishing boat called Epping GY7 can still be seen on the beach here in 1948. The trawler sank in a storm, killing 14 crew members. The wreck remains here as a grim tribute to this tragedy and Other. In Iceland, the sea symbolizes both life and death. Lóndrangar PinnaclesWe now transfer to the southern side of the peninsula. The next stop is the Lundrangal Pinnacles, volcanic plugs made of basalt that rise from the roaring sea, carved out of the surrounding cliffs by centuries of waves. The two peaks rise 75 meters and 61 meters above the surrounding terrain respectively. A nice walking trail allows you to explore the area and admire the pinnacles from different viewpoints. Arnarstapi cliffs &amp; sea-bridgeWe continue to the village of Arnastapi, a small fishing village located by the sea with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and coastline. This was once an important fishing center, but now that industry has slowed, tourism has become a vital lifeline for this strong community. There is a lot to see here. The cliffs here are home to a large number of birds and are an important nesting site. The viewpoints here provide photographers with a great spot to capture the various bird species that live in this area. The striking basalt columns and strange rock formations are intertwined with narrow paths formed by years of erosion, showing the struggle between the land and the sea that wants to take it back. Walk on the stone bridge that has been eroded into a stone arch by the sea below. This is another popular subject for keen photographers. It may look dangerous in photos, but rest assured it is completely safe. Búðir ​​Black ChurchIceland's famous black church, Búðakirkja, was originally built in 1848 and restored in the 1950s and 1980s. Professional and amateur photographers alike love photographing this striking black church, as it contrasts sharply with the remote and desolate landscape in which it is located, making it a great subject for photographs. Ytri Tunga beachOur final stop on this trip was the golden sands of Ytrittunga Beach. Although many prefer our black sand beaches, this beach has a special surprise. It is one of the best places in Iceland to see seals, and colonies of seals can often be seen lazing on the rocks not far from shore.
