Itinerary
Once filled with coconut plantations and used as a weekend retreat by wealthy city dwellers, Katong developed into a residential suburb by the early 20th century. It became populated by a growing English-educated middle class, including Peranakans and Eurasians.
09:00h, gather at Rumah Kim Choo.
Rumah Kim Choo
Kim Choo Kueh Chang’s rice dumplings are a mainstay in Singapore’s diverse epicurean tapestry since 1945. Unyielding to the hands of time and untainted by modern influences, Kim Choo has indeed preserved the richness in taste and fragrance of Nanyang.
Koon Seng Road Peranakan Houses
Prepare to feel like a unicorn running on rainbows ’cause these conserved Peranakan houses along Koon Seng Road are also painted in pastel colours!
Located at the core of Peranakan culture here in Singapore, many shophouses in this area that have been around since the early 1900s have been conserved. However, the most iconic ones are unmistakably these two rows found along Koon Seng Road.
The Eurasian Association (EA) and Eurasian Heritage Gallery (EHG)
The Eurasian Association has a long history of serving the interests of the Eurasian community in Singapore since its inception in 1919. In 1994, the EA was formally accorded “Self-Help Group” status by the Government to act on behalf of the Eurasian community in Singapore.
Visitors will immerse in the Eurasian culture, learning about the origins, history, lifestyle and contributions of the Eurasian community, through the guided tour of the three galleries. (Foreign visitors admission $5/ pax)
Gallery 1: Who Are The Eurasians, History of the EA, Enclaves
Gallery 2: To Serve and Lead, To Defend and Protect
