Stop at: Medvjed kula
Details: The Bear Tower Jajce (Bosnia and Herzegovina) was built in Romanesque style, and being so indicated that it is the one of earliest military structures from the Bosnian MIddle Ages. Thory of names is simple - due to its thickness of the walls which are reaching between 4.5 and 6 meters it was given such a name. Also there is mythical one which says that it was named so because it was place where bears fed on captives and convicts, who were kept there. Pretty amazing. Belfry St.Luke is the only surviving medieval tower in continental part of the Balkans, with height of 23,15 meters it was built in first half of XV century. The Tower of St.Luke in Jajce is actually the bell tower of the Gothic church of Holy Mary, although the whole church came to be called that name due to metonymony. Being built in first half of XV century, with characteristics of three different styles: Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance. The building of the church is not dated exactly, but it is assumed that it was erected at the site of an earlier Romanesque church at the beginning of XV century. The church was the place where the relics of St.Luke the Evangelist were enshrined. The relics were brought to Jajce by the last Bosnian Queen, Mara Jelena as her dowry.
