Nanwutai Scenic Area is located on the northern slope of the Qinling Mountains in Chang'an District, Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province, at an altitude of 1688 meters.

Wutai Mountain was formerly known as Taiyi Mountain. It is named Nanwutai because there are five peaks on the mountain: Guanyin, Wenshu, Qingliang, Lingying, and Sheshen. The scenic area is located south of Chang'an City.

Nanwutai Mountain is characterized by its mountain peaks, steep cliffs, mountain springs and waterfalls, sunrises and sunsets, and seas of clouds and Buddha's light. Shengbao Spring is located halfway up the mountain, its waters gushing and refreshingly cool. Climbing Guanyin Terrace offers panoramic views of the Qinling Mountains. At the summit are five peaks: Guanyin, Wenshu, Qingliang, Lingying, and Sheshen. There are also over 60 historical sites and cultural relics, including temples such as Amitabha Temple, Shengshou Temple, Zizhu Forest, Yuanguang Temple, and Xilin Temple, as well as the remains of large and small bathhouses from the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Sui Dynasty Pagoda, Xiangzi Cave, and the Northwest Bureau Conference Center.

There are more than forty temples on the mountain, distributed on various platforms in an orderly layout. On the west side of the mountain are the main hall of Xilin Temple and monks' quarters. The scenic area has many ancient trees, among which the "Tang Locust Tree", "Ancient Magnolia", and "Nanshan Evergreen Pine" are representative.

In January 2021, Nanwutai Scenic Area was designated as a national AAA-level tourist attraction. In October 2024, it was rated as a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.
