This is a 1-day tour from Lanzhou, delving into the cultural and natural wonders of the Gannan Tibetan region. Departing from your Lanzhou hotel in the early morning, you'll travel by vehicle to the "World Tibetan Studies Center" – Labrang Monastery. Founded in 1709 during the Qing Dynasty's Kangxi era, this is one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, once housing over 4,000 monks at its peak. Here, you can join local Tibetans in clockwise prayer walks along the unique scripture-turning corridor (3.5 km long with over 2,000 prayer wheels), visit the monastic colleges, the golden main prayer hall, and the Gongtang Pagoda, experiencing the power of faith and the depth of Tibetan culture.
In the afternoon, head to Sangke Grassland, just over 10 km from Labrang Monastery. This alpine meadow grassland, with an average elevation of over 3,000 meters, covers an area of 70 square kilometers and serves as the primary pastoral base in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. The lush grasslands are dotted with flocks of sheep and cattle, while summer brings a vibrant display of wildflowers. Under the blue sky and white clouds, the scene resembles a traditional Tibetan painting of "wind sweeping across the grass, revealing grazing livestock." You can freely stroll or go horseback riding (at your own expense) to experience the authentic nomadic lifestyle of the Tibetan people.
This journey starts from Lanzhou, crossing the Han-Tibetan cultural boundary within a day to experience the solemnity of Tibetan Buddhism and the vast freedom of pastoral life on the grasslands.
Friendly reminder: Labrang Monastery is at an altitude of approx. 3,000 m, while Sangke Grassland is over 3,000 m above sea level, which may not be suitable for travelers prone to altitude sickness. Please walk slowly and avoid strenuous activities. The UV radiation is strong at high altitudes, so take sun protection measures.
