No. 1 of Best Things to Do in Canton of Schaffhausen

Rhine Falls

154 reviews
Rhine Fallsis located on the upper Rhine River in northern Switzerland, straddling the border between the Canton of Schaffhausen and the Canton of Zurich, just a few km from the old town of Schaffhausen. It is one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe, where the riverbed, approx. 150 m wide with a drop of approx. 23 m, plunges down. During the high-water season, hundreds of cubic meters of water crash down every second, and you can hear the thunderous roar before you even get close. This waterfall was formed during the last glacial period, approx. 14,000–17,000 years ago, carved by the erosion of the riverbed narrowed by hard, erosion-resistant limestone. The massive rock standing in the center of the waterfall is a remnant of the ancient river cliff. An iconic experience is to take a small boat to the massive rock in the center of the waterfall, dock, and climb the stone steps to the platform on top, where you can feel the mist on your face and hear the deafening roar just inches from the water curtain. The views from both banks are unique: Laufen Castle on the Zurich side sits high on the cliff, making it a classic spot for a panoramic view of the waterfall; the viewing platform on the Schaffhausen side is close to the water, perfect for capturing the spray of the water curtain at eye level. You can take a boat round-trip between the two banks, or walk across the pedestrian path next to the upstream railway bridge to visit the other side, capturing the scenery from different angles.Neuhausen am Rheinfall · 34.9km from Zurich

This place is absolutely must visit and good chocolate tasting. There is a Cafe on site. Must reserve tickets early as tickets can sold out for that day.

Lake Zurich (Zürichsee) is a serene gem in Switzerland, perfect for both relaxation and adventure. The crystal-clear waters reflect the surrounding Alps, creating postcard-worthy views. Visitors can enjoy leisurely boat rides, lakeside strolls, or cycling along the scenic promenade. Quaint cafés and parks dot the shoreline, offering spots to unwind and soak in the atmosphere. In summer, swimming and paddleboarding are popular, while winter brings a peaceful, reflective charm. Whether admiring the sunsets over the water or exploring nearby historic sites in Zürich, Lake Zurich offers a rejuvenating escape that beautifully blends natural beauty with urban convenience.

The exhibition hall is large, divided into a new hall and an old hall. It's recommended to start with the old hall. It mainly showcases Swiss history from various perspectives. The service is excellent, and there are interactive elements with visitors, making it a highly recommended destination. The hall has Wi-Fi, but there is no Chinese audio guide. Only English, French, German, and Italian are available.

This lesser-known attraction is worth a visit. The area isn't large, but it's incredibly popular. The view up close is quite breathtaking. Although I didn't get to climb to the national flag, being halfway up the mountain already gave me a real sense of its unstoppable, surging power. It's a bit chilly in autumn, so dress warmly and be sure to bring waterproof clothing.

Bahnhofstrasse is Zurich's most famous shopping street, luxurious and full of vitality! It is full of top brand stores, exquisite cafes and century-old shops, which is very stylish to visit. The street is clean and elegant, with trams running through it, retro and modern. Although the prices are high, the window viewing and street photography are worth it! It is recommended to experience the exquisite life in Switzerland, remember to bring your wallet~

The Old Town of Zurich is a preserved part of the original urban appearance of Zurich's old city. It is the living environment of the earliest Swiss people. It lacks commercial atmosphere and high-rise buildings, but retains the leisurely and affluent life of the most simple old European residents.

If you’re visiting Zurich, make sure to add Kunsthaus Zürich to your itinerary. As Switzerland’s largest art museum, it houses an impressive collection ranging from the Middle Ages to contemporary masterpieces. From works by Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso, and Munch to striking modern installations, every gallery offers a unique journey through art history. Even if you’re not an art enthusiast, the museum’s architecture, atmosphere, and world-class exhibitions make it worth a visit. One of my favorite parts was the museum shop, filled with beautifully designed books, postcards, and creative souvenirs that make perfect keepsakes from Zurich.

Really nice museum for soccer fans, though I'm not, easy access on which floor to go to, clear displays and merchandise were fully stocked. Staffs were friendly for checking in and where to store bags in locker that was just at the basement. Great for company team building, students(they were quite noisy) and family
