Datong Must-Visit: Half-Day Mini-Group Tour to Yungang Grottoes

  • Itinerary:
  • Meeting time: 08:00am
  • Meeting point: Qingyuanmen Square of Datong
  • Duration: 4 hours

Gather at the meeting point in the morning to kick off your tour. We'll visit the Yungang Grottoes (Self-payment of expenses: shuttle bus CNY15 per person, audio guide rental CNY20 per person). Carved into the mountainside and stretching 1 km long, the complex features 51 major grottoes and over 50,000 Buddha statues, embodying the grandeur of Northern Wei Buddhist art.

Marvel at the 17-meter-tall seated Sakyamuni Buddha, admire the exquisite apsara frescoes and Buddha story carvings on the cave ceilings, and soak in the grottoes' imposing scale. Wander through diverse caves—some boast vivid, well-preserved murals depicting ancient religious culture and daily life; others house Buddhas of varying expressions, from compassionate gazes to meditative looks. Immerse yourself fully in the thriving Buddhist culture of the Northern Wei Dynasty.

After the tour, we'll head back to Datong Qingyuanmen Square for drop-off, wrapping up this delightful half-day trip.
