Vanalinn
No. 1 of Best Things to Do in Estonia

Vanalinn

6.8
4.6/5
112 reviews
Vanalinn is a remarkably well-preserved medieval city on the Baltic Sea and was once an important trading port of the Hanseatic League. In the Lower Town, centered around Raekoja plats, the Gothic Old Town Hall stands on one side of the square. St. Olaf's Church, with its spire over 100 m high, the Three Sisters houses with their three connected gables, and the Town Hall Pharmacy, which has records of operation dating back to the early 15th century, are all scattered throughout this area; a few minutes south of the square is St. Nicholas' Church & Museum, which is now a museum of religious art; the late medieval masterpiece "Danse Macabre" housed inside is particularly worth a stop. The higher Toompea Castle area, also known as the Upper Town, features the onion-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Cathedral of Saint Mary the Virgin standing side by side, which, together with the ancient castle, outline the skyline. The medieval-style doors, windows, and hanging signs along the streets are details that many people easily miss. The preserved ancient city walls stretch for nearly 2 km, connecting one circular tower after another, offering a different perspective from the top of the wall. Walk to the Kohtuotsa and Patkuli viewing platforms on the edge of Toompea, where red-tiled roofs layer upon layer spread out toward the Baltic Sea.Estonia · Tallinn

Vecrīga

46 reviews
Although the total area of Vecrīga is not very large, it boasts over 800 years of history. Located in the Riga region of Latvia, Europe, it serves as both the geographical center of Riga and its historical and cultural center. Walking through it, you will find that the architectural styles and street layouts are much like those in Western European countries. From the Hanseatic League era, many historical landmarks remain here, such as the House of the Blackheads, along with many other historical traces. Although the name contains "Old Town," the "old" here refers to its long history, and the buildings themselves are far from "old." Each building holds its own against modern architecture, often possessing even more charm. Amber jewelry here is beautiful and quite famous. While the population is small, every Latvian is friendly and welcoming, always ready to answer travelers' questions, which is why this place is so popular with visitors.Riga · 80.7km from Cesis

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is located on Toompea. Named after Alexander Nevsky, who defended against the Teutonic Knights' invasion in the 13th century, it was built between 1894–1900. It is the tallest and largest domed Orthodox cathedral in Tallinn, featuring distinctive "onion" domes. From here, you can overlook the entire Vanalinn and the city of Tallinn. The interior of the cathedral is decorated with mosaics and other patterns, making it well worth a visit. It also features a famous bell ensemble, consisting of 11 bells, including the largest in Tallinn, which can be heard before services.Estonia · Tallinn

Hill of Crosses is a pilgrimage site 12 km north of the city of Siauliai. It is believed that the first crosses were placed at a former military bunker site after the Lithuanian uprising against Russia in November 1831. Over the centuries, Catholic pilgrims have placed many crosses here, as well as giant crucifixes, sculptures of Lithuanian patriots, statues of the Virgin Mary, and thousands of tiny effigies and rosaries, each cross representing an unyielding spirit, a noble soul, and the silent, defiant national character.Lithuania · Meskuiciu seniunija

15 reviews
Unveiled in 1935, this monument is an important symbol of Latvia's freedom, independence, and sovereignty, built to commemorate the soldiers who died during the Latvian War of Independence (1918–1920). At the top of the monument, a young woman holds three stars, facing west, representing the three regions of Latvia: Kurzeme, Vidzeme, and Latgale. The inscription reads "For Fatherland and Freedom." The Freedom Monument is 42 meters high, and the carvings on it represent the history and culture of Latvia. Riga usually holds public gatherings and official ceremonies here. The changing of the guard ceremony in front of the monument is quite interesting, and you can watch it if you have time, but in winter or when the weather is bad, the soldiers only guard the monument in the morning.Riga · 80.1km from Cesis

Vanalinn, Tallinn’s Old Town, is a beautifully preserved medieval quarter that feels like stepping into a storybook. Cobblestone streets wind past colorful merchant houses, Gothic churches, and hidden courtyards, all encircled by impressive stone walls and towers. Town Hall Square is the lively heart, perfect for soaking in the atmosphere from a cozy café. Climbing Toompea Hill offers panoramic views over red-tiled rooftops and the Baltic Sea. By day, it’s a treasure of history and architecture; by night, lantern-lit streets create a magical charm. Vanalinn is a must-visit for anyone seeking authentic medieval ambiance with a vibrant modern twist.

Vilnius Cathedral is one of the most impressive landmarks in Lithuania, located in the heart of Vilnius. Its elegant classical architecture, spacious square, and beautiful surroundings create a peaceful and memorable atmosphere. I especially enjoyed walking around the cathedral and taking in the historic charm of the Old Town. The cathedral feels both grand and welcoming, making it a wonderful place for visitors interested in history, architecture, and culture. The nearby streets are perfect for a relaxing walk and photography. Whether visiting during the day or in the evening, Vilnius Cathedral offers a beautiful glimpse into Lithuania’s rich heritage and is definitely worth adding to any Vilnius itinerary.

The cobblestone streets of Riga's Old Town are worn smooth and shiny, with buildings on both sides blending Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau styles. The red brick facade of the Blackhead Palace stands out in the square, while the church spire peeks out from the alleyway beside it. The houses along the Daugava River are newer than those in the Old Town, and the cafes along the riverbank are bustling in the afternoons, with boats slowly passing by on the water. In winter, the Old Town becomes much quieter, and when the snow covers the rooftops, it's as serene as an old photograph. Actually, the Old Town isn't very big; you can easily find your way around it after a few walks, and every detail offers something new to discover.

One of the most classic buildings in Estonia Estonia is not big, Tallinn is even smaller. The whole Tallinn gives people a very good feeling. But if you want to talk about any landmarks, this church must have a name It was built in the late 19th century when Tallinn was under the rule of the Russian Empire, so it is a typical Russian style. It is also the largest and tallest Orthodox church in Tallinn.

In winter, you can go to the mountains to see the icicles. The trails are well-maintained and have anti-slip mats, so you don't have to worry about slipping. The trees are covered with glistening icicles, which shimmer with a bluish light when the sunlight shines through, making them look like the trees are blooming with crystal flowers. It's especially beautiful. Villagers sell hot tea eggs by the roadside for three yuan each. They're warm to hold in your hand. You can stroll around at your own pace and take pictures without feeling crowded at all. It's much more impressive than the pictures you see online. After walking around, you feel refreshed and relaxed. It's much more comfortable than staying at home.

Kadriorg Park in Tallinn, Estonia, is a beautifully landscaped green space created in the early 18th century by Peter the Great. Designed in Baroque style, the park surrounds the elegant Kadriorg Palace, blending formal gardens, flowerbeds, fountains, and tree-lined avenues. Over the centuries, it has expanded to include more natural landscapes, walking paths, ponds, and statues, making it a favorite spot for both relaxation and cultural exploration. The park also hosts museums and art collections, adding to its charm. The Old Town of Tallinn is divided into the Upper Town and the Lower Town. Follow the guide to walk from the Lower Town to the Upper Town, through the streets and alleys. Among them, the St. Catherine's Passage is a relatively distinctive small street. It is narrow and a little steep. The street is a cobblestone path. Through this street, you can reach the highest point of the Old Town of Tallinn to see the scenery of the city.
