The Bears' Cave
The Bears' Cave is a famous limestone cave in Chiskoi, Bihor County, in the western Apuseni Mountains of Romania. Discovered in 1975 by the amateur cave exploration group Speodava, the cave earned its name in 1983 after the discovery of over 140 cave bear skeletons, suggesting that the cave served as a hibernation site for these extinct creatures approximately 15,000 years ago. The cave is 1.5 kilometers long and reaches a depth of 482 meters. It features three main galleries and four distinct halls: the Candle Hall, the Emil Rakowicz Hall, the Spaghetti Hall, and the Bones Hall. Visitors can explore these remarkable formations, which include impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and calcite shaped like spaghetti. The Bones Hall houses the fossilized remains of cave bears, offering a glimpse into prehistoric life. It's only a 1km walk from the Scărișoara hostel to the tarmac road and a 500m walk up the path to the ice cave ticket counter. We were admitted just before 10am as the first tourists and there were only two of us. Mid September isn't the best time of year to visit an ice cave but there was still ice inside the cave and a little ice on the stairs. They did a good job with the lightning. Not too much and a bit of colour. We did see ice caves before (Iceland and Croatia) and this one was impressive enough. As we were leaving the cave another tourist entered and on the way up a large group came down.
