Lake Hallstatt

Lake Hallstatt is located in the Salzkammergut region of Austria and is an Alpine lake carved by glaciers. It has a long, narrow surface and towering cliffs on both banks, resembling a fjord. The lake reaches a depth of 125m and has clear water; it is named after the town of Hallstatt on its shore. When the water is calm, the surface reflects the peaks of the Dachstein Mountains like a mirror. It is often shrouded in mist in the early morning, and the mountain forests are colorful in the fall. A traditional wooden flat-bottomed boat called a "Fuhr" is still preserved on the lake. It has been used to transport salt and goods on the lake since the 13th century, and this boating skill has now been included in the list of intangible cultural heritage. Every year on Corpus Christi, local residents hold a traditional procession on the lake. People decorate the flat-bottomed boats with flowers and set up altars on them. The bishop, choir, and people dressed in traditional costumes travel by boat on the lake to perform rituals, a unique folk custom that has continued for hundreds of years. In addition, the clear water of the lake also attracts diving enthusiasts. Sunken ancient trees and the wreckage of old salt transport ships are preserved underwater, and there is even an underwater altar. Tourists can take sightseeing cruises around the lake, and looking back at the town of Hallstatt from the lake is a classic postcard view. There are walking trails and bicycle paths on the east bank, suitable for hiking or cycling to enjoy the lake and mountain scenery.Hallstatt · 10.1km from Altaussee

I had an amazing experience visiting Hallstatt, and it felt like stepping into a real-life postcard. The village is incredibly beautiful, with calm lake views, traditional wooden houses, and mountains surrounding the area. One unforgettable moment was standing by the lake early in the morning when the water was completely still and reflected the entire village like a mirror. I also enjoyed walking through the small streets, taking photos at every corner because the scenery was just so stunning. The atmosphere is peaceful and relaxing, very different from busy cities. Overall, Hallstatt is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited and definitely worth the trip for its breathtaking views and quiet charm.

Strolling along the shores of Lake Hallstatt, the crystal-clear waters and the surrounding Alps create a picturesque scene that has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Hallstatt is famous for its calm lake, towering churches, quiet towns, and majestic mountains. Everything forms a perfect picture. Although the morning and evening are equally calm, the scenery is very different due to the different light angles. If possible, try to avoid visiting here at noon when there are many tourists.

A commercial center in the town. There are many specialty shops inside. Many of them are century-old shops. You can see local souvenirs here, and there are also stores of international brands for souvenirs. You can walk around at will.

[Scenery] Emperor Franz and Sissi met in Bad Ischl, where they were engaged. Empress Sophie gave the villa to the emperor as a gift. The royal family often came here for vacation and hunting. [Fun] The courtyard is green and grassy. There is a low hill opposite the villa, from which you can overlook the entire town. [Value for money] The Royal Villa Garden is 4.6 euros, and the palace and photo museum are charged separately. Since there is only German explanation in the palace, we can't understand it at all, so we only bought tickets for the garden.

Driving to Salzburg, I passed by St. Gilgen and saw Lake Wolfgang again. It was so beautiful that I pulled over to the side of the road to see it~ The beautiful scenery at the beginning of the famous movie "The Sound of Music" was shot at Lake Wolfgang~ Lake Wolfgang was listed as a World Natural Heritage Site by the United Nations in 1997. You will never get tired of seeing it~

Due to the limited land area of Hallstatt, the remains of the deceased will be moved out of the graves and placed in the ossuary in the caves on the mountain ten years after burial. The skulls engraved with names and dates of birth and death are stacked together to form a human bone chamber. A total of 1,200 skulls are stacked in the ossuary, 610 of which are painted with patterns.
