[In-Depth Switzerland Tour] A Breathtaking Hidden Paradise! Hiking from the Summit of Ebenalp to Seealpsee: Stroll with Free-Roaming Cows and Discover the Stunning Cliff Restaurant Certified by National Geographic!
📌 Preface: A Hidden Gem for Swiss Locals, Embracing the Purest Alpine Soul
When you mention Switzerland, the first things that pop into most travelers' minds are the snows of Jungfrau, the majesty of the Matterhorn, or the bustling vibes of Zermatt. However, tucked away in the Appenzell mountains of northeastern Switzerland lies a utopia beloved by Swiss locals yet relatively untouched by tourists: Ebenalp and Lake Seealpsee.
Here, you won't find shoulder-to-shoulder tour groups. Instead, you'll be greeted by rolling emerald slopes, the crisp echoes of cowbells, and a breathtakingly reflective lake. This is a top-tier hiking route that brings together a "high-altitude cable car, cliffside trail, ancient cave church, and alpine emerald lake." Whether you're a hardcore hiker looking to challenge your legs or a laid-back traveler who just wants to zone out and unwind in nature, this "mountain-in, lake-out" trek will absolutely show you the most authentic and pure Alpine magic!
🚡 Stop 1: Touching Down on the Grassy Summit via the Bright Red "Ebenalp Cable Car"
This magical adventure kicks off in the tranquil village at the foot of the mountain—Wasserauen.
Right by the Wasserauen station, a sleek, bright red aerial tramway bearing the white "Ebenalp" lettering sits quietly, waiting for passengers. As the cable car slowly sets off, it lifts us off the ground at a staggering angle, heading straight for the Ebenalp summit at an altitude of 1,640 meters. As we climb higher, the green village, rolling hills, and dense forests at the mountain's base gradually shrink, opening up an incredibly expansive view.
Upon arriving at the summit station and stepping out the doors, you're met with a spacious, comfortable gravel trail and wide-open grassy slopes offering panoramic views. A cozy summit cabin with yellow walls and red windows stands tall, with signs clearly pointing to various hiking routes. Under the clear sky, thrill-seeking paragliders carrying massive blue-and-white tandem gliders run against the wind on the lush green slopes, taking off to soar through the Alpine valleys. This scene blends perfectly with the overlapping blue sky and mountains in the distance, creating vibrant and visually striking photos!
⛪ Stop 2: Journey Through the Mystical Underground Wildkirchli Cave to the Cliff Restaurant
From the summit, we take a leisurely hike downhill. This descent is the absolute highlight of the entire trip, where culture and natural scenery perfectly intertwine.
Following the wooden boardwalk down, the trail magically disappears into massive natural limestone cliffs. Hidden here is a dark, spacious, and uncannily crafted natural underground karst cave. This is the famous St. Michael's Cave Church (Kapelle St. Michael / Wildkirchli). The history and memories of this ancient cave church are projected in German onto the towering rock walls. Walking on the damp stone path, with the sound of dripping water echoing in your ears and feeling the mysteriously cool underground air, you can't help but marvel at the wonders of nature.
Exiting the karst cave, you immediately hit a cliffside boardwalk built clinging to the vertical precipice, complete with safety railings. Just around the bend of the boardwalk, the globally renowned cliff restaurant that once graced the cover of National Geographic—Berggasthaus Aescher—suddenly appears right before your eyes! It's mind-blowing how this century-old, traditional wooden Swiss building is magically nestled and embedded right beneath a sheer, straight rock face. Below it lies a steeply sloping emerald green hillside and a bottomless canyon. Countless foodies from all over the world sit under the umbrellas on the restaurant's open-air terrace, sipping on cold Swiss beer and digging into traditional potato rosti (Rösti), all while taking in a 180-degree unobstructed view of the magnificent valley ahead. This daring architectural feat combined with the sheer cliff scenery is definitely a jaw-dropping visual marvel you must see in your lifetime!
🏔️ Stop 3: Stroll Through an Emerald Wonderland and Enjoy Lazy Times by Lake Seealpsee
After leaving the cliff restaurant, the trail starts to cut steeply downward, guiding us through a dense forest, accompanied all the way by the crisp "ding-dong" of cowbells.
Along the way, there are plenty of Alpine dairy cows roaming freely on the hillsides. Set against a backdrop of azure skies and towering, jagged limestone mountains, and accompanied by these adorable national treasure cows, that mirror-like Lake Seealpsee in the middle of the valley soon reveals itself before you even realize it.
The scenery at Seealpsee can truly only be described as a masterpiece of "lakes and mountains"! The crystal-clear, perfectly emerald green lake water flawlessly reflects the surrounding towering, dense pine forests and the majestic, blade-like mountain peaks in the distance, looking exactly like a still, gorgeous watercolor painting. A classic dark green wooden rowboat, the "Berggasthaus Seealpsee," rests quietly on the gravel shore, adding endless poetic charm.
The vibe here is incredibly relaxed and laid-back:
Alpine Lake Swimming: The water quality at Seealpsee is impeccably clean. On a midsummer afternoon, countless nature-loving tourists will strip down to their swimsuits and dive right into the icy, crystal-like lake water for a swim, enjoying the refreshing thrill of the freezing snowmelt washing away their fatigue.
Lakeside BBQ and Chilling: Along the clear shores, many locals bring firewood and groceries to host DIY barbecues and picnics on the lakeside grass. With the smoky aroma of meat mingling with the fresh scent of pine, many people just lie on the grass, soaking up the sun, reading a book, and lazily unwinding for the afternoon.
👣 The Finish Line: A Leisurely Walk Back to Wasserauen
After recharging by the lake, we took an easy stroll back to our starting point—the Wasserauen cable car station—along a gentle and wide forest road, bathed in the glow of the setting sun. The entire route forms a perfect closed loop.
Just from my personal experience, if you take this whole trip at the most relaxed and slowest pace, stopping along the way to snap photos, swim in the lake, and soak in the stunning views, it perfectly makes up a fulfilling, flawless day. There’s no rush or anxiety of keeping to a tight itinerary, just a deep, meaningful conversation between nature and your soul.
🗺️ Recommended Itinerary for Tourists: The Most Effortless "Mountain In, Lake Out" One-Way Route
There's quite an elevation drop between Ebenalp and Seealpsee. To take the best care of your legs, we highly recommend the golden route of "taking the cable car up the mountain and hiking down":
1. Morning: Aerial Views and Cultural Pilgrimage (Wasserauen ➡️ Cable Car Summit ➡️ Cave Church)
Set off in the morning and arrive at Wasserauen at the foot of the mountain, then take the Ebenalp cable car straight to the summit. Enjoy the graceful takeoff of paragliders at the summit observation deck. Next, follow the yellow "Seealpsee" signs all the way down, passing through the mystical Wildkirchli cave church to experience the solemnity of the medieval underground.
2. Noon: Lunch at the Cliff Restaurant
After exiting the cave, walk for about 10 minutes to reach the Berggasthaus Aescher cliff restaurant. Take a break here, order a Swiss specialty, and enjoy lunch on the open-air seating clinging to the cliff, soaking in the panoramic view of the magnificent Wasserauen Valley right across from you.
3. Afternoon: Strolling the Cow and Sheep Pastures and Swimming in Lake Seealpsee
After lunch, head all the way down the steep but well-paved zigzag mountain trail. Along the way, you can get up close and snap selfies with the free-roaming Alpine cows. Once you reach Seealpsee, switch into lazy mode: when the temperature peaks around 2 or 3 PM, you can dive into the emerald lake for a swim just like the locals, or find an open spot by the lake to start a fire, BBQ, take a walk, and enjoy the snow-capped mountain reflections.
4. Late Afternoon: Easy Return Trip via the Gentle Forest Road
Around 4 or 5 PM, follow the gentle, paved downhill connecting road dedicated to Lake Seealpsee. Take a stroll to walk off your food, and in about 30 minutes you can easily walk back to your original starting point at the Wasserauen train/cable car station to catch a ride back to the city.
💡 Practical Spot Info for Travelers
Spot Name: Ebenalp + Lake Seealpsee

Transit Guide: Take the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) or a local train to the final stop, "Wasserauen". Right across from the train station is the lower station of the Ebenalp cable car. It's right there as you exit, making the commute incredibly intuitive and convenient.
Prep Tips:
Footwear & Difficulty Warning: Even though we chose the downhill route, some downhill sections from the cliff restaurant to Seealpsee are quite steep and full of loose gravel. Please be sure to wear professional hiking boots or trail shoes with strong grip and anti-slip features. We highly advise against wearing flat sneakers or high heels. Friends with bad knees are recommended to bring along a pair of trekking poles to relieve pressure.
