Shiquanhe (Ali Prefecture capital, 1,500 km from Lhasa, permit town) has a forgettable center but a 2 km riverside gobi walk along the Sengge Zangbo’s south bank, starting behind the prefab market. Free, unlit, no ticket. I arrived at 16:30 in late September, walked upstream from the bridge, and caught the 18:10 sunset where the brown river, the grey gobi, and the 4,200 m air all cooled at once. No poplars, no dunes — just river grit, distant truck lights on G219, and a 20-minute violet-to-indigo fade. Carry a headlamp; the walk back is pitch by 19:00. WeChat pays everywhere in town, but the riverside sells nothing — water, wind shell, gloves mandatory (night drops to −2°C). Rule: stay south of the river marker, north bank has PLA buffer. Mistake: thinking “Ali = Guge photo” and skipping Shiquanhe — the town dusk is the honest Ali, not the postcard. Would you build a rest day in Shiquanhe just to walk this unglamorous riverbank at dusk, or push straight to Guge and miss the quiet version of Ali?

Some say that when it comes to Tibet, there are only zero times or countless times. If I could only choose once, I hope it will be in 2026. We always think that understanding someone simply requires enough communication and listening. Yet, we forget that some words are meant only for the wind, and some choices can only be explained by the scenery. Hitting the road is always the most meaningful thing! It allows us to see our own hearts clearly while exploring the worlds of others. Today's joy is a perfect ten straight from the mountains, rivers, lakes, and seas; with their boundless embrace, they accept all our vulnerabilities and insecurities. Every departure is a reunion with the world, and nature will remember which cloud made you stop in your tracks. Out there, beneath the open sky, we can finally strip away our disguises and return to our truest selves. As our wheels roll through sunsets across different latitudes, we experience the magic of time shifting across dimensions. The stunning landscapes we've witnessed eventually become the starlight shining in my eyes. I turn the names on a map into the paths beneath my feet, one step at a time, to embrace the stories hidden in the wind. These real-life experiences—far more vivid than anything found in a book—will ultimately forge the toughest armor deep within our souls. In an era full of uncertainties, we constantly seek a definite answer, forgetting that taking that first step to travel is always what matters most. This passion for life will carry us through our lowest moments and lead us to our own bright spring.

On the Loess Plateau along the Xiangquan River in Zanda County, Ngari Prefecture, the ruins of the Guge Kingdom stand silently atop the earthen forest at an altitude of 3,800 meters, like a vast labyrinthine castle. This massive architectural complex, stretching over 300 meters and towering 115 meters high, was once the center of the Tubo royal family's regime, which lasted for 700 years. However, in the 17th century, it was suddenly deserted, leaving only mottled earthen walls, exquisite murals, and countless unsolved mysteries. At dawn, the entire royal city glows golden against the backdrop of the earthen forest; as dusk falls, the crumbling walls whisper in the wind, as if telling the story of that lost civilization. 🌟 Exploring the Ruins: The Architectural Miracle of a Three-Dimensional Royal City The architectural layout of the Guge Kingdom is a model of ancient plateau city planning, strictly divided into three major areas according to rank: the royal palace, temples, and residences. The royal palace area on the mountaintop still retains the ruins of the winter and summer palaces, with the painted ceilings of the summer palace still bearing auspicious patterns such as lions, elephants, and peacocks. Inside the Red Temple, White Temple, and Reincarnation Temple on the mountainside, the thousand-year-old murals remain vibrant in color. The "Sixteen Vajra Dancers" mural in the Red Temple, in particular, with its graceful dance and shimmering necklaces, is considered a pinnacle of Tibetan mural art. At the foot of the mountain, the cave dwellings are densely packed like a honeycomb, with 879 caves still existing, bearing witness to the once bustling life of tens of thousands of people. 🌟 Artistic Treasures: Buddhist Epics Frozen on the Walls The Guge murals blend the essence of Tubo tradition, Kashmiri style, and Nepalese art, forming the unique "Guge School." In the "Shakyamuni Preaching" mural on the north wall of the White Temple, the Buddha is depicted wearing a thin veil covering his shoulders, with the background showcasing the unique earth forest landscape of Ali. The triptych "Heaven, Earth, and Hell" in the Reincarnation Temple uses a powerful visual language to interpret the Buddhist cosmology, with the realism of the hellish scene being astonishing. These murals not only possess artistic value but also serve as visual historical materials for studying Guge society, depicting vivid scenes of trade, celebrations, and hunting. 🌟 Unsolved Mystery: The Sudden Disappearance of 100,000 Residents What baffles archaeologists most is the sudden disappearance of this dynasty with 100,000 inhabitants in 1630. In a "mast cave" discovered on the cliff north of the site, more than ten headless mummies were found in struggling postures, hinting at a sudden catastrophe. Archaeological discoveries show that the royal palace granaries still contained large quantities of supplies, and the temple's ritual implements were well-preserved, all indicating that the ancient city was not destroyed by prolonged warfare. The prevailing view now is that the Ladakh invasion and religious conflict led to the dynasty's downfall, but the true cause remains shrouded in historical mystery. 📅 Complete Visiting Guide Best Time to Visit: May to October is the best time to visit, with September and October offering the clear skies and highest visibility. During the rainy season (July-August), roads are prone to landslides, so pay close attention to road conditions. In-Depth Itinerary · 3-Day Classic Route: Day 1: Zanda County Town → Toling Monastery → Zanda Earth Forest Viewpoint (Adapt to Altitude) Day 2: Sunrise at the Guge Kingdom → In-depth Tour of the Ruins → Exploration of the Thousand Corpse Cave Day 3: Exploration of Surrounding Grottoes (Dongga Piyang Grottoes) → Stargazing in Xiangquan Valley New Archaeological Discoveries: In recent years, archaeological teams have unearthed the remains of an iron smelting workshop in the northern part of the site. The crucibles and ventilation pipes unearthed prove that the Guge Kingdom had mastered advanced metalworking techniques. A newly discovered gilded Buddha crown in the lower level of the Thousand Corpse Cave has overturned the academic understanding of Guge handicrafts. 💡 Special Experience Guide Photography Tips: The hour before and after sunrise is the golden hour for photographing the Guge Kingdom, when the sunlight turns the earth forest a warm gold. Use a telephoto lens to capture details of the murals, and a wide-angle lens to show the relationship between the architecture and the environment. For astrophotography, it is recommended to choose a moonless night; the Milky Way rising from the top of the palace ruins is breathtaking. Cultural Taboos: Please circumambulate the prayer wheel clockwise. Do not point directly at the murals with your finger. Silently pray before photographing Buddha statues. Do not take any soil or stone specimens from the site, and do not carve on the walls. When you stand atop Guge Mountain, overlooking the Xiangquan River winding through the earthen forest, and touch the still-faded vermilion paintings on the remaining walls, you will feel the shock and sorrow of a civilization's rupture. This dynasty's ruins, sculpted from earth, resist the erosion of time more resiliently than stone, awaiting those with the right affinity to decipher its hidden secrets. It is recommended to stay two nights in Zanda County, allowing a full day to savor every detail of this high-altitude Pompeii. (Important Note: The site limits daily visitors to 400; advance reservations are required through the "Zanda Tourism" WeChat official account. A border pass is required for visits; a guided tour is recommended for a deeper understanding of the historical background.)

We drove away from Darchen at noon on the 21st, continuing our journey toward Ngari. We soon arrived at the Zada Earth Forest. Located in the Xiangquan River valley in Zada County, Ngari Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region, the Zada Earth Forest is the largest, most typical, best-preserved, and most uniquely shaped Tertiary stratum weathering landform in the world. Many call it the "epic of the earth deep in western Tibet." Its total area is approximately 2,464 square kilometers, and this vast landscape stretches for hundreds of kilometers, endless and continuous. Looking out from a high vantage point, the layered earth forest is arranged under the blue sky and white clouds, resembling an ancient army standing in formation, carrying a heavy, solemn, and majestic aura. The forms of the Zada Earth Forest are unimaginably rich. Earth pillars, towers, walls, platforms, and fortresses are scattered about, with height differences reaching tens of meters. They have evolved into bizarre shapes resembling castles, watchtowers, sharp peaks, jungles, and treasure vases. Driving through them feels like weaving between the feet of giants.

Day 9: Depart from Lhasa to your departure point, ending this plateau journey. ✨ The summer ecological viewing experience at Yamdrok Lake has officially begun! On the shores of this sacred lake at an altitude of over 4,400 meters, red-billed gulls and plateau naked carp perform a natural, lively life theater together. The wooden boardwalk at Viewing Platform No. 3 is the core interaction point: on sunny days, flocks of red-billed gulls circle at low altitudes and dive to skim the water. Visitors can feed the gulls and experience the intimate moment of them pecking from your fingertips. In the shallow water areas, you can see schools of plateau naked carp swimming, their silver scales shimmering. After feeding, the fish gather and leap, with splashes flying like scattered gold. Viewing Platform No. 1 offers a panoramic view of Yamdrok Lake, while platforms No. 2 and No. 2.5 provide close-up perspectives. Locations like Zhamalong Village are also included in the all-access ticket. The plateau climate is changeable, so it is recommended to prepare basic protective supplies such as oxygen bottles and glucose oral liquid. . Attractions: 1. Lake Manasarovar ⭐⭐⭐ Address: 20 km southeast of Mount Kailash, Ali Prefecture, Tibet Opening hours: Apr 20–Nov 30, 08:00–19:00 Duration: 3–5 hours Like a piece of jade dropped onto the plateau, the lake water is so clear that it blends with the blue sky. The lake surface is like a mirror, and the scattered islands are super beautiful. In summer, you can feed red-billed gulls and watch schools of plateau naked carp. Viewing Platform No. 1 offers a panoramic view of the whole lake, providing a full experience. . 🚗 Documents: Bring your ID card and border permit. Obtain the border area pass for Shannan and Ali in advance. 👕 Clothing: Prepare thick jackets and quick-drying clothes. The temperature difference between day and night in September is large. Also, bring a sun protection mask and hat. 🧴 Skincare: Bring high-SPF sunscreen and lip balm. The plateau is dry with strong UV rays, so moisturizing lotion is essential. 🫁 Tools: Bring portable oxygen bottles, common cold medicine, a power bank, and a car charger. 🍚 Supplies: Bring high-calorie snacks and a thermos. There aren't many dining options along the way. 📷 Photography: Bring a wide-angle lens and spare batteries. The low temperature on the plateau can drain camera batteries quickly. 🧹 Hygiene: Bring a portable toiletry kit and disinfectant wipes. Some accommodation points may not have complete amenities. . On this trip to Ali-Shigatse-Shannan, be sure to tuck the romance of Tibet into your pocket and bring it home with you 🥰

You can start your route from Shiquanhe and head southwest. Take some time to acclimate to the high-altitude environment first, then connect Zanda Earth Forest, the Guge Kingdom, Mount Kailash, Lake Manasarovar, and Pangong Tso. Adjust your specific route based on your departure point, road conditions, and the day's weather. Don't mistake the straight-line distance on a map for the actual experience. Zanda Earth Forest is best viewed when the light is soft. The layers of the earth forest, the shadows in the canyons, and the crumbling walls of the Guge ruins change constantly as the sun moves. Don't rush to take photos upon arrival. First, find a spot where you can see the overall landscape, then slowly walk closer to observe the details. This will give your photos more depth than just getting close to the structures. Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar are best experienced at a slower pace. Gazing at the sacred mountain, watching the changing colors of the lake, and listening to the wind are essential experiences here. Don't push yourself during high-altitude activities. If you feel significant discomfort, reduce your time spent and walking. Prioritize sleep, hydration, and staying warm over "seeing one more spot." 🏔️ The charm of Pangong Tso lies in its openness and tranquility, with a strong sense of space between the lakeshore, valleys, and roads. It is better to set aside half a day for an observational stop: watch the lake colors when the weather is good, or observe the mountain formations when it's windy or the clouds are low. There's no need to obsess over a specific "standard view." Practically speaking, keep drinking water, simple food, warm layers, sun protection, and common emergency supplies in your vehicle. Supplies aren't always easy to find, so stock up on essentials before you leave areas where they are available. Mobile signal, navigation, and payment options may vary by region, so save important information offline in advance and keep your documents with you at all times. The key to saving money isn't cutting every expense, but reducing backtracking and last-minute purchases. Plan your general direction in advance, split vehicle and accommodation costs reasonably based on the number of people, and try to purchase supplies at reliable stops. When choosing accommodation, prioritize rest quality. When you combine early mornings, long-distance driving, and altitude sickness, the money you save is often not worth as much as a good night's sleep. Ngari is also worth experiencing for the local life in small towns along the way, Tibetan cuisine, and chance encounters with pastures, lakeshores, and starry skies. Leave some flexibility in your itinerary; adjust the order if you encounter road closures, snowfall, or sudden weather changes. A truly comfortable trip to Ngari isn't about checking off the most attractions, but about seeing the vastness of this land within the limits of safety and your physical stamina. ✨

For this trip to Tibet, I chose a 10-day, 9-night private tour with Trip.com. We had a Tank 300 for the entire journey, driving all the way west from Lhasa to Ngari, covering iconic landmarks like Yamdrok Lake, Mount Everest, the Guge Kingdom ruins, and Namtso. The scenery was truly breathtaking—every day felt like walking through a painting. It was absolutely worth the trip! 🚗✨ The entire experience was a private tour, so the itinerary was flexible. We didn't have to rush, and we could take our time to enjoy and photograph every spot. The driver and guide were very familiar with the route, which made us feel safe even at high altitudes. Sharing a few practical tips: · The Ngari region is at a high altitude, so I recommend arriving in Lhasa a few days early to acclimatize rather than heading straight to high-altitude areas. · The vehicle was an off-road SUV with a stable chassis, but the roads can be bumpy, so I suggest bringing a neck pillow and motion sickness medication. · It's windy and there's a large temperature difference at Everest Base Camp, so be sure to pack a thick jacket and sun protection gear. · The Guge Kingdom ruins and the temples along the way are very photogenic, so I recommend setting aside extra time and camera storage space. If you're visiting Tibet for the first time and want to see in-depth attractions, this tour is a great fit. The scenery and the overall experience were top-notch. I have to say it again: it was truly worth the trip! 🏔️🏔️

The beauty of Ngari doesn't lie in how many attractions you check off, but in the ever-changing skies, lakes, snow-capped mountains, and wilderness along the way. This is a place to slow down your itinerary and give the scenery the time it truly deserves. For your first visit, you can plan a route around the sacred mountains, holy lakes, the Guge Kingdom, and the Zanda Earth Forest. Snow-capped mountains are best viewed from a distance on sunny days, lakes are best in the early morning or evening, and the Guge ruins are best visited when the light is soft. The most important thing about high-altitude travel is pacing. Don't rush during the first few days after arrival; focus on acclimatizing, avoid strenuous exercise, drink plenty of water, and ensure you get enough rest at night. Only when your body is stable can you enjoy the scenery ahead. The key points along the road are often more surprising than the destination itself: a stretch of road that suddenly opens up, a lakeshore without any tourists, or a herd of yaks passing in the distance—all these will become the most unforgettable images of your journey. If you see scenery you like, feel free to stop for a while. For practical arrangements, it is recommended to prepare windproof and warm clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, and common medications. The weather on the plateau changes quickly, so use a layering system for your clothes to make it easy to add or remove layers. Also, pay attention to the battery life of your mobile phone, camera, and charging equipment. If you want to save money, try to plan your transportation and accommodation in advance to reduce extra expenses caused by last-minute route changes. It is more flexible to share vehicle and accommodation costs when traveling with others. However, don't overpack your daily schedule just to save a little time. Ngari is better suited for those willing to embrace uncertainty: the journey may be long, signals and supplies may be unstable, and comfort cannot compare to city travel. In exchange, you get vastness, tranquility, and a sense of awe that can only be felt by arriving in person✨
