This time, we will start from Lanzhou, pass through Zhangye, Jiayuguan, and Dunhuang, and spend seven days completing this westward journey spanning a thousand years. As the only provincial capital city with the Yellow River running through it, Lanzhou combines the boldness of the northwest with the warmth of everyday life. So, when in Lanzhou, you can’t miss a bowl of authentic Lanzhou beef noodles. A perforated space exists between the two mouths, and the bottom narrows, making it a very unique type of prehistoric pottery. ❤Reasons for Recommendation: This double-mouthed pottery was unearthed at the Huoshaogou site in Yumen, Gansu. Completely different from the common three-legged pottery vessels with bird-beak spouts, it is a typical characteristic artifact of the Qijia or Siba cultures. 👍Highly Recommended: Double-jointed containers were storage vessels at the time. Some believe they may have been related to ancient marriage and sacrificial rituals. The same three days, choose between bustling local life and wild, untouched landscapes. 01 Haixi Mongolian Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Qinghai While others crowd into Chaka Salt Lake in July, I head straight to Chaerhan Salt Lake. 🚄 It’s less than a 40-minute taxi ride from Golmud city center. Tickets plus sightseeing bus cost just over 100 yuan. ⏰ Arrive after 4 PM. The slanting sunlight hits the water, salt crystals sparkle like tiny diamonds, and it’s so quiet you can hear the wind tinkling as it brushes the crystals. Emerald Lake is even wilder. Navigate to “Dachaidan Emerald Lake,” there’s a simple parking lot by the road. 📍 Walk to the innermost bright green pool—don’t stop at the first one you see. ⚠️ Wear dark slippers; salt crusts hurt your feet. Light-colored shoes get ruined. At the foot of the Kunlun Mountains, don’t rush to take photos—sit on a roadside rock and watch the clouds move along the ridgeline. It’s better than any filter. 02 Wenzhou | Zhejiang Yandang Mountain is best explored in the morning. ⏰ Enter Lingfeng Scenic Area at 6:30 AM. The morning mist hasn’t cleared, and the rocks look like they’ve grown out of an ink painting. 🍜 At the foot of the mountain is “Axiang Noodle House,” famous for its seafood noodles. The broth is so fresh it’ll make your eyebrows fall off. Skip the big group tour loop; just visit Lingfeng and Lingyan. Leave the park by 2 PM when the sun makes the rocks glare. Liu Bowen’s hometown is in Nantian Town, about a 2-hour bus ride from Wenzhou South Station. 📍 In front of Wuyang Academy stands a 600-year-old camphor tree with shade cool enough for a nap. ⏰ Visit at dusk. The wooden buildings glow warm gold, and almost no one is around. ⚠️ Closed on Mondays. Don’t go for nothing. 03 Longyan | Fujian The shock of the tulou (Yongding) isn’t in the Tulou Prince Scenic Area. 📍 Bypass the commercial street of Hongkeng Village and walk deeper for half an hour to “Rushenglou”—the smallest round tulou. The door panels are carved with flowers and birds, and elders sit in the courtyard peeling bamboo shoots. 🍜 An old lady in the village sells glutinous rice wine for 5 yuan a bowl. It’s very sweet. Walking Longting Ancient City at night is more atmospheric than during the day. Enter from Sanyuan Pavilion, walk east along the moat. The stone slabs are polished shiny from footsteps. ⏰ After 7:30 PM, when tourists have left and lanterns light up, you can hear distant Hakka mountain songs. Guanzhaishan is not recommended—two hours of climbing for a small hilltop isn’t worth it. Better to eat a spicy, pickled vegetable baji pancake at the foot of the mountain. 04 Hanzhong | Shaanxi You don’t have to walk the entire Shimen plank road. Take the sightseeing bus from the park entrance to the “Shimen Reservoir” stop, turn left and walk 200–300 meters along the plank road to see the carved characters “Shimen,” then turn back. ⏰ Best to arrive before 9 AM when the mist hasn’t cleared. The sound of the Bao River mixes with birdsong. ⚠️ The plank road steps are narrow. Be cautious with elderly travelers. The ancient Han platform is hidden inside the Hanzhong Museum. 📍 On the third floor of Wangjiang Tower, the east window looks out over the Han River, the west window faces the rooftops of local houses. Free entry with ID. At dusk, sit under the willows on Binjiang Road for an hour and watch the sunset turn the river orange. 🍜 Nearby “Hanshui Renjia” serves hot rice noodles with chili that’s spicy enough to make your throat burn. 05 Guiyang | Guizhou Tianhetan is in Huaxi District, reachable by bus 211 from downtown. ⏰ Enter at 8:30 AM. Explore the dry cave first, then take a boat into the water cave. The cave is 10 degrees cooler than outside, with wet stalactites dripping water. It takes about two hours to walk through the entire karst cave. Don’t buy the round-trip boat ticket included in the package; it’s not worth it. In Qingyan Ancient Town, only walk “Zhuangyuan Street” and the “Back Street.” 📍 The stone slabs on the back street are worn shiny black by shoe soles, and moss clings thickly to the walls. 🍜 Braised pig’s feet are everywhere. Choose the one with steam coming from the stove at the door. It’s 3 yuan each and so tender it falls off the bone. Visit Gaopo Yunding Grassland in the afternoon. The wind is strong at the top, making it hard to stand, but the clouds float right above your head. ⚠️ Don’t go up the mountain during summer storms; the roads are slippery. 06 Jiuquan | Gansu The sunset at Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake is the main event. ⏰ Enter at 5:30 PM. Climb the sand dune on the left. The ladder in the middle is crowded, so move 100 meters left where the slope is gentler and no one has stepped. Reach the top just in time to see the sun sink behind the sand ridge and the Crescent Lake light up. 🍜 Outside the park, “Xiajia Hezhi” serves lamb soup with flatbread. The hot soup brings out the fresh flavor of the lamb. Mogao Caves require advance booking for emergency tickets (138 yuan for four caves). If you can’t get an A-class ticket, don’t stress. 📍 Cave 148 has the longest reclining Buddha. Look at the toes—the nail art is so fresh it looks like it was painted yesterday. ⏰ Visit from late June to early July. The cave temperature is several degrees cooler than outside. After half an hour inside, you have to come out. Yadan Geological Park is too far—four hours round trip by car, with only two or three stops to see the landforms. Better to stop for half an hour at Yumen Pass and watch the loess mounds stand on the Gobi Desert, wind and sand blowing your face. 07 Xing’an League | Inner Mongolia Arxan National Forest Park can’t be fully explored in one day. ⏰ Enter at 7 AM and head straight to Tuofengling Tianchi. Climb 683 steps. When you reach the top, the sun will have just turned the water blue-green. ⚠️ Don’t trust the “horseback tours” at the park entrance. They’re expensive and bumpy, and the spots are just a few steps away. Riding horses actually takes a longer route.
