Named after the ancient spring that never freezes, the fortress complex is grand and solid, carrying the unique vastness of northern ancient architecture. The tail end of summer vacation 2025. After a one-and-a-half-hour bus ride from Lingqiu, I arrived in Laiyuan on time and eagerly headed to Geyuan Temple. Even if I couldn’t enter the main hall, just seeing the exterior with its flying phoenixes and bird motifs would be enough to appreciate the bold legacy of the Tang dynasty. Fortunately, luck was on my side. The director of the local cultural heritage office was inside giving a tour to visitors. The main door was slightly ajar, so I carefully pushed it open and followed along, learning many details. Geyuan Temple is one of the eight major Liao structures. Although it was discovered last, it was built the earliest. The main hall, the Manjusri Hall, has a single-eave xieshan roof, three bays wide and three bays deep. The bracket sets under the eaves are massive and support the structure with great depth. The front window lattice is intricate and ornate, and the plaque reads “Great Wisdom Manjusri.” This Manjusri, hidden east of the Taihang Mountains, is closely connected to the Manjusri on Mount Wutai. Both belong to the same region. After traveling extensively, you’ll find that counties and cities near Shanxi have richer cultural relics and ancient architecture than other areas. Its four major highlights make it unique— · A millennium-old “standard” Liao dynasty main hall with a clear date; · The rare Liao dynasty diamond lattice windows, the only ones remaining in the world, not to mention the Jin dynasty and later additions; · The great iron bell cast in the fourth year of the Liao Tianqing era, made over 140 years after Geyuan Temple was built.
