Nanning is great but I won’t come back because honestly…
Nanning is great, but I won’t go again 😭 Just left! Here’s my honest, heartfelt review
To be honest! Nanning is seriously an underrated green city that heals the soul
The city is full of greenery, evergreen all year round, streets are clean and tidy, the air is fresh, and the slow pace is super relaxing!
Affordable prices, easygoing lifestyle, everywhere you go there’s cheap local food—lao you fen, suan ye, and luosifen to enjoy to your heart’s content
No crowded anxiety like in first-tier cities, locals are gentle and friendly, the vibe is laid-back and soothing
Daytime is full of healing greenery, evenings by the Yong River bring gentle, pleasant breezes—definitely a livable southern small city✨
But honestly, here’s the truth: the scenery is beautiful, but the experience is average. Once is enough, no need to come back just for this!
It’s not that Nanning is bad! It’s just that this trip had too many pitfalls, hardships, and scams!
I’ve put together a comprehensive, hard-earned guide to avoid traps. Sisters planning to visit Nanning, just copy this and avoid 99% of tourist traps!
🌡️First warning! The southern sauna-like heat and humidity are unbearable
If you’re not from the south and hate heat and humidity, don’t rush to Nanning from June to September!!
True to its nickname “green city,” lots of plants mean max humidity!
36℃+ high temps are normal, combined with over 90% humidity. It’s not dry heat or sunburn, it’s like being in a steam sauna
The moment you step out of air conditioning, it’s suffocating. Hot waves mixed with moisture hit you in the face
Five minutes of walking and you’re soaked, clothes stick tight, hair gets oily and flat instantly
Your face sweats nonstop, makeup melts off, sticky feeling all day long, super uncomfortable!
The worst is the super strong UV rays plus unpredictable weather
Even on cloudy days with no sun, you still get tanned and sunburned silently
Afternoon thunderstorms hit randomly with no warning, always carry an umbrella when going out
Sunburn, rain, and heat switch nonstop. Playing like a special forces soldier will wear you out!
Also, Nanning’s dense greenery means tons of mosquitoes! Casual park visits or riverside walks will leave your legs covered in bites. Always carry mosquito repellent
❌Honest truth about attractions | Pretty online, but traps and boring in reality
Many say Nanning is a “tourism desert,” and it’s not without reason!
Attractions are scattered, mostly free but very similar, online hype outweighs the real experience, easy to be disappointed!
1. Qingxiu Mountain | The only top spot, but don’t wander aimlessly
Nanning’s must-visit city lung, super dense vegetation, excellent air quality, the summit overlooks the whole city, great for healing photos!
💣Big traps to avoid
1. Never enter at noon! The midday sun is scorching and stuffy, the forest is hot and poorly ventilated, you’ll sweat buckets after a few steps
2. Buy the sightseeing bus pass! The park is huge, walking can reach 20,000 steps a day, legs will be dead tired. The official pass is great value. Don’t take the 50 yuan black-market car at the entrance
3. Don’t trust scalpers selling overpriced combo tickets! Buy tickets directly from the official WeChat account, cheaper and reliable
4. Snacks and drinks at the entrance are double the price. Bring your own water and snacks
✅Right way to visit: enter before 8 AM, avoid crowds and heat. Visit the orchid garden, shade plant garden, Guanyin Zen temple, and Dragon Elephant Pagoda in order, easy and relaxed
2. Sanjie Liangxiang | Legendary night scene, don’t come during the day
Old Nanning’s core landmark, ancient alleys with blue bricks and retro arcade buildings. At night, the lights create a strong traditional vibe, perfect for gentle photos!
💣Real traps
1. No highlights during the day! Bare old streets, heavy commercialization, no atmosphere, just ordinary shops, very boring
2. Main street is full of mass-produced trendy shops, overpriced cultural and souvenir goods, feels like a wholesale market from Yiwu. Don’t buy randomly
3. Free photo shoots and gift offers from strangers on the street are all scams! Low prices to lure you in, then forced upselling of retouched photos and hidden charges. Don’t engage
3. Tingzi Pier | Only visit at dusk, don’t come just for daytime
Beautiful Yong River views, sunset and night lights are very soothing, great for evening strolls and breezes
💣Trap warning
The pier is bare and lifeless during the day, no views or atmosphere, a total waste of time
No need to go early. Arrive around 6 PM to watch the sunset, enjoy the breeze, and take night photos perfectly
4. Nanhu Park | Local walking spot, tourists don’t need to come specially
A free city park with dense greenery and open lake views, a favorite spot for locals to run and walk
💣Tourist warning
No special sights or photo spots, overall very ordinary. Not worth a special visit! Few people at night and it’s remote, not recommended to go alone after dark, safety is average
5. Xiangsi Town/Yangmei Ancient Town | Remote and boring
Heavily hyped online but actually far and quiet
Very far from downtown, inconvenient transport, commercialized and hollow ancient towns, few shops, very similar scenery
Skip if short on time, just visit if passing by, no need to make a special trip
6. Nanning Zoo | Very low value, visit with caution
Rumored to be great value, but facilities are old and the park is small
Super crowded on holidays, two-hour lines for five minutes of viewing, animals are average, poor experience, not recommended for a special visit
🍜Food guide | Delicious but full of traps! Don’t follow the hype blindly
They say food is king in Guangxi, and Nanning snacks are truly amazing!
Lao you fen, suan ye, luosifen, and rolled rice noodles are cheap and authentic, safe bets. But trendy shops are all traps!
❌Must avoid food traps
1. Be cautious on Zhongshan Road’s trendy street!
The whole street is tourist-priced snacks, double the price, bland taste, many pre-made semi-finished products, not authentic Nanning flavors
Fruit bowls are weighed and super scammy, short weight and heavy markup. Don’t buy
2. Don’t queue blindly for trendy lao you fen!
Tourist shops near attractions are sweeter and not authentic, expensive with small portions
Lao you fen is usually sour and spicy! If you can’t eat spicy, say so in advance to avoid trouble
3. Don’t buy souvenirs at attractions!
Luosifen, dried mango, and osmanthus candy are marked up more than twice, expensive and not tasty
✅Locals’ secret authentic eats
1. Lao you fen: avoid trendy shops! Look for Shu Ji on Qixing Road and Fu Ji at the end of Zhongshan Road. Locals flock there, super fragrant and flavorful
2. Suan ye: buy from small stalls in residential areas! Mango, pineapple, and radish suan ye are sour, spicy, crunchy, and great for cutting grease
3. Rolled rice noodles, pig eye noodles, and locust flower noodles: old shops in the old city alleys, cheap and generous portions, authentic old Nanning taste
4. Buy souvenirs directly from large local supermarkets, guaranteed authentic, cheap, and no scams
🚗Transport traps | New travelers must read! Lots of hidden scams
1. Never take black-market cars at the airport or train station!
Lots of touts offering shared rides and low-price direct cars, but they overcharge, take detours, and add fees last minute
Prioritize metro, airport buses, and official ride-hailing apps for transparent pricing and no scams
2. Be cautious with roadside motorbike taxis and tricycles!
They offer low prices to lure you in, then raise prices or overcharge after you get on. Always agree on the total price beforehand or better yet, don’t ride
3. For short trips in the city, shared electric scooters are best!
3 yuan for half an hour, flexible and convenient, faster than taxis or buses, perfect for exploring old city alleys
4. Avoid roadside “1 yuan attraction” cheap tours!
They’re all shopping scams with forced store visits, wasting lots of your time
🏨Accommodation traps | Don’t book randomly! Huge quality differences
❌Not recommended: guesthouses near Chaoyang Square and Zhongshan Road
Old buildings in the old city, some rooms are damp and smelly, poor soundproofing, night markets downstairs are noisy until late, light sleepers won’t rest well, online photos are heavily beautified, real conditions are disappointing
✅Top recommended areas: Qingxiu District and around MixC Mall
Clean and tidy environment, new hotel facilities, good soundproofing, dry and not damp
Convenient metro access, easy to reach major attractions, many food options nearby, great value, ideal for longer stays
✍️Final honest summary
Nanning really is a gentle, easygoing, healing green city
Full of greenery, gentle evening breezes, abundant food, and a relaxed pace of life
No noisy commercialization, simple and friendly locals, affordable prices, perfect for short breaks, slow travel, and relaxing with good food and drinks
But!
Summer is hot and sticky, attractions are scattered, few standout highlights, many tourist traps, and the overall experience is average
Good for short nearby getaways and food tours, but not for long-distance dedicated trips
One visit to experience the green city vibe and taste authentic local snacks is enough for a fulfilling trip✨
