Xunyang 5-person, 4-day, 3-night travel guide
The "Natural Taiji City" hidden by Xi'an locals! 5 people, 4 days, 3 nights, 3,000 RMB per person—this small town in southern Shaanxi is incredible
Hello fellow travelers, I'm your old friend for ancient towns. After traveling for so many years, if there's one place I feel I "visited too late," it's definitely Xunyang.
Many people know that southern Shaanxi has Ankang and Hanzhong, but they don't know that at the confluence of the Han River and the Xun River, there lies a mountain city naturally outlined by the rivers into a Taiji pattern. In September, the heat in Xunyang fades, the weather is crisp and clear, and there are so few tourists that you could practically have the entire viewing platform to yourself. The best part—5 people, 4 days, 3 nights. Budget 15,000 RMB. 3,000 RMB per person. You'll stay well, eat well, and have a thorough experience.
🚗 Transportation: Driving is the top choice, high-speed rail works too
Driving (highly recommended): Depart from Xi'an, take the Baomao Expressway, exit at "Xiaohe," and drive along National Highway 211 all the way into Xunyang. The total distance is about 240 km, taking 3.5–4 hours. The latter part follows National Highway G316, where the Han River canyon scenery is stunning, perfect for stopping to take photos anytime. For 5 people in one car, the round-trip fuel + toll fees are about 1,200–1,500 RMB, only 240–300 RMB per person.
High-speed rail: Xi'an North to Xunyang Station takes about 2 hours by bullet train, with second-class seats costing about 65 RMB. It takes over 10 minutes to take a taxi from the station to the city center. However, the attractions are scattered, and you'll need to transfer to get to Shuhe Ancient Town, so it's not as convenient as driving.
🗺️ 4-day, 3-night essential itinerary (relaxed and not tiring, super cost-effective for 5 people)
Day 1: Depart from Xi'an → Taiji City sunset (free spectacle)
Depart from Xi'an in the morning and arrive in Xunyang at noon. After checking into the hotel, head straight to the Songjialing Viewing Platform—the highlight of the city, open for free. Look out from the heights to see the Han River and Xun River winding together, naturally forming a huge Taiji Yin-Yang diagram; nature's craftsmanship is fully on display. Early morning with mist or evening with sunset are the best times for photos. After descending the mountain, explore the old town of Xunyang, stroll through the undulating stone-paved streets, and visit the Confucian Temple (Ming Dynasty architecture, free). In the evening, take a walk in the Riverside Park to see the night view of Taiji City. For dinner, try Xunyang specialties like Liangchan noodles and Kangkang bread.
🏨 Accommodation: Chain hotels by the river in the county, two rooms for about 400–500 RMB/night, total accommodation for 5 people for 4 days and 3 nights is about 1,200–1,500 RMB.
Day 2: One day in Shuhe Ancient Town ("Little Hankou," free)
In the morning, drive 50 km to Shuhe Ancient Town (about 1 hour drive). This thousand-year-old town, which flourished due to Han River shipping in the Ming and Qing dynasties, is known as "Little Hankou." The streets of the ancient town are free to enter.
Essential route: Visitor Center → Huangzhou Guild Hall (Qing Dynasty Hubei merchant guild hall, must-see "Mingfeng Tower" stage) → Yangsi Temple (a place for boatmen to pray, located on a cliff overlooking the river, overlooking the confluence of the two rivers) → Mosque (blending Han and Islamic architectural styles) → Stroll through the bluestone ancient streets. The whole trip takes about 4 hours. At noon, taste the Shuhe Eight Great Dishes (provincial intangible cultural heritage banquet, eight cold and eight hot dishes, 40–60 RMB per person). In the evening, watch the sunset by the Han River, with the orange sunset covering the river surface. Stay overnight at a homestay in Shuhe Ancient Town or return to Xunyang County.
🏨 Accommodation: Ancient town homestays are about 100–200 RMB/night/room, two rooms for about 200–400 RMB.
Day 3: Yangshan wellness (50,000 mu of forest + alpine meadows)
In the morning, head to Yangshan—only 11 km from the city, boasting 50,000 mu of primeval forest and 20,000 mu of alpine meadows. The average summer temperature is 22°C, known as a "natural oxygen bar." It is one of the first "National Forest Villages" and a provincial-level forest wellness base. You can experience artistic leisure at boutique homestays like Shaonian Yuanzi, or go hiking and watch the sea of clouds. In the afternoon, return to the county and visit the Xun River Corridor Bridge—a landmark cultural and tourism complex spanning the Xun River, connecting the old and new cities.
🏨 Accommodation: Return to the county to stay, two rooms for about 400–500 RMB/night.
Day 4: Shuiquanping pastoral + return trip
In the morning, head to Shuiquanping in Renhekou Town—a natural "air-conditioned" oxygen bar at an altitude of 1,300 meters. Thousands of acres of rice fields spread out in the valley, and September is the season when the rice waves are rolling. You can experience the rice field train, Xiwan campsite, etc. At noon, taste farm-style dishes and buy souvenirs like selenium-rich rice and fermented bean curd. Return to Xi'an in the afternoon.
