After visiting Pits 1 and 3, we made our way to Pit 2. This pit is essentially a "mixed special forces unit." Its standout feature is the most complex and complete military formation, consisting of terracotta warriors and warhorses divided into four main units: archers, charioteers, infantry, and cavalry. A major highlight here is the display of five individual figures in glass display cases surrounding the pit. Unfortunately, during my visit, some were undergoing maintenance, so only two were on display. Nevertheless, it still felt incredibly magnificent. Getting to observe the Terracotta Warriors up close, you can really see the exquisite craftsmanship—down to the intricate details on their buttons and the treads on their shoes. There is also an area where you can see the dedicated staff meticulously and continuously excavating the site.

It’s not an ordinary stage play; it’s a top-tier live performance with Mount Li as the backdrop and Huaqing Pool as the stage, featuring real mountain and water scenery combined with lighting effects and misty starry skies. The immersive experience is truly divine and leaves you breathless long after it ends. Highlights The entire show follows the love story of Yang Guifei and Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, unfolding in multiple chapters. Giant light projections on the mountain, snowflakes falling from the sky, ethereal mist, flying stages, and flame effects appear in succession, creating a richly layered stage. The actors’ movements and the choreography are extremely delicate, fully immersing you in an ancient atmosphere. At night, with the real Mount Li behind you and the starry sky above, the blend of ancient and modern scenes is incredibly breathtaking—beautiful yet heart-wrenching, the atmosphere far surpasses ordinary indoor performances. Photo Spots The central area offers the best view, perfectly centered to capture the mountain stage and panoramic light effects; for atmospheric videos, seats in the front rows on the sides are better, where the mist and light effects are most intense. And you're in China 🇨🇳🚆: · arrived at the wrong station · missed your train · didn't have time to get off the train at your station All of this happened to me in one day 🙈. An interesting twist for someone in charge of organizing a trip, but... It was day 6 of our overly well-organized Beijing - Xi'an - Zhangjiajie - Fenghuang - Zhangjiajie - Chongqing run, which we called a vacation, and I decided to give my friends a memorable day. I won't go into detail about how it all happened. I'll tell you what to do if you decide to repeat it. 📌 To avoid making a mistake with the station, check and save the names in Chinese. To do this, translate trip.com into Chinese, go to your bookings, and take a screenshot. You can also copy the station name from there. Find the station on Baidu or Amap, using the Chinese name. If you need help from a Chinese person finding the entrance, etc., also show them the Chinese text. Believe me, 99% of people won't understand what you need if you show them "Beijing West Railway Station." They definitely won't distinguish between "west" and "east." ⏰ If you missed your train, you can't refund tickets through trip.com. Go to the ticket office with your passport. Using the simplest possible phrases, tell the ticket clerk in the translator that you missed your train and need an exchange. She will check your reservation and suggest the next train with available seats. There is no exchange fee. 🏃➡️If you missed your station, don't panic! Find the conductor, show your ticket, and hope the next stop isn't in a few hours. At the next station, you will be dropped off and handed over to the station staff, who will send you back on the first available train. I was lucky—with four minutes to go before the next station, the high-speed train had only gone about 40 kilometers. I didn't wait an hour for the return train and took a taxi back myself. P.S. I didn't actually miss the station. The stop in Fenghuang, where we arrived, was only a couple of minutes away. I honestly didn't expect that, considering it's a tourist town. While I was checking to make sure everyone in our group had disembarked (we were in two different carriages), I couldn't even make my way back to the exit through the huge suitcases of people boarding the train. #china

I Couldn’t Believe How Many Amazing Things You Can Do in Xi’an for Free Xi’an is famous worldwide as the home of the Terracotta Army and the historic starting point of the ancient Silk Road, so before my visit, I imagined every historic site and landmark would come with a high entry fee. I was so pleasantly surprised to find out just how much of this incredible city can be enjoyed without spending a single yuan. Some of my most memorable moments didn’t involve paid tickets at all—they came from walking along ancient walls, wandering through lively neighbourhoods, and soaking up thousands of years of history right in the open air. If you’re travelling on a budget, you’ll quickly learn that Xi’an offers so much more than its ticketed highlights. Its culture, atmosphere, and history are everywhere, and much of it is completely free to explore. Here are some of my favourite free things to do: 🏯 Walk around the Xi’an City Walls – While climbing the walls requires a ticket, strolling the wide, tree-lined moat paths and circling the massive outer structure is completely free. You’ll get a true sense of the city’s ancient scale and beauty. 🌃 Explore the Muslim Quarter & Beiyuanmen Street – This bustling, colourful neighbourhood is full of old architecture, traditional courtyards, and the scent of local snacks. Wander the alleyways, watch street vendors at work, and soak up the lively atmosphere without needing to buy a thing. 🏮 Visit the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda Square – The square itself is free to enter and beautifully designed. You can admire the pagoda from outside, watch the famous music fountain shows in the evening, and enjoy open spaces filled with local life. 🌿 Relax in Tang City Wall Park – A lovely green belt surrounding parts of the old city, perfect for a quiet walk, watching locals practise tai chi, fly kites, or gather to sing and dance. It’s a peaceful place to escape the busy streets. 🏛️ Admire the Bell Tower & Drum Tower from outside – These two iconic landmarks sit at the heart of the city. While going inside costs money, viewing them from the surrounding squares and intersections, especially when lit up after dark, is a spectacular and free experience. 🌉 Walk along the Wei River Banks – A wide, open riverside area with paths, green spaces, and great views, ideal for an evening stroll or watching the sunset paint the sky over the city. 🎑 Explore Shuyuanmen Cultural Street – A charming lane lined with traditional-style shops selling calligraphy, paintings, antiques, and handicrafts. Even if you don’t purchase anything, the architecture and cultural vibe make it well worth a visit. What I loved most about Xi’an was how history feels present in every street and corner. It blends ancient heritage with modern daily life so seamlessly. Some of my best moments came from simply sitting in a square, watching people go about their day, or getting lost in quiet lanes that felt untouched by time. My biggest tip? Many people choose to travel to China during July and August because it coincides with holidays and school breaks. But did you know... this period isn't ideal for every city. Actually, you can still visit the 5 cities listed below normally, but the weather might prevent you from getting the full experience. You might encounter extreme heat, frequent rain, heavy crowds, or natural scenery obscured by fog and rain. If you want a memorable trip, try checking the best times to visit before booking your tickets. It can make your trip a lot more enjoyable! 😊 ⸻ 🌆 1. Shanghai Hot, Humid, and Sudden Rain Showers Shanghai is a fantastic city to explore on foot, but July through August is the peak of summer. Temperatures often hit 35–40°C, and with high humidity, walking outdoors can quickly leave you exhausted. Additionally, there are intermittent rain showers, especially in the afternoon, and by late August, there's a chance of typhoons affecting the area. 📌 If you have a choice, October to November is highly recommended. The weather is pleasant enough for strolling around the city all day. ⸻ 🏯 2. Beijing Scorching Heat and Massive Crowds Beijing is another top destination for many, especially for the Great Wall and the Forbidden City. However, during July and August, not only is it hot, but it's also the summer holiday season for Chinese schools, making almost all tourist attractions exceptionally crowded. For a more comfortable sightseeing experience of its landmarks, September to October offers cooler weather and fewer crowds. ⸻ ⛰️ 3. Zhangjiajie Beautiful Views... But You Might Not See Them Every Day Zhangjiajie is famous for its floating-like stone pillars. But during the rainy season, particularly in July, you might encounter heavy rain and thick fog, which can obscure many viewpoints. On some days, cable cars and hiking trails might even be affected by the weather. If you want postcard-perfect views, it's best to visit between September and November. ⸻ 🐼 4. Chengdu A Lovely City... But Quite Muggy Chengdu offers pandas, cafes, and delicious Sichuan food, but summers here are quite humid. Rain alternating with sunshine makes the air feel quite sticky on certain days. Even so, if you focus on city tours, café hopping, or visiting museums, you can still have a great time. Just make sure to pack an umbrella and breathable clothing. ⸻ 🌃 5. Guangzhou Hot, Humid, and Prone to Storms Guangzhou is located in southern China, making its summers significantly hotter and more humid than many other cities. It rains quite frequently, and at times, it can be affected by typhoons, meaning outdoor travel plans require plenty of flexibility. If you want a comfortable trip, visiting from November to December is a much better choice. ⸻ 🌿 So, where should you go in July–August instead? The good news is... this same period happens to be the most beautiful season in Western China! ✨ Hohhot – Endless, lush green Mongolian grasslands. ✨ Kashgar – An ancient city with a vibrant Central Asian atmosphere. ✨ Qinghai – Stunning blue lakes contrasting with snow-capped mountains. ✨ Shangri-La – Cool weather and valleys filled with blooming flowers. ✨ Yili – Grasslands and natural scenery often called the "Switzerland of China." ⸻ Choosing the right time to travel is just as important as choosing your destination, because the same city can offer vastly different experiences depending on the season. If you're planning a trip to China in July and August, take a quick look at the weather forecasts before booking, and select a city that suits the season.
