We thought a real safari in South Africa was only Kruger National Park, 12 hours in a car, and a ton of money. 💸 Then we found Inverdoorn Game Reserve, 2.5 hours from Cape Town, where you can see the famous BIG FIVE, and it blew our minds. 🤯 It was my first time on safari with a Soviet Zenit camera and binoculars: zooming through the binoculars, film 🎞️, and wildlife. When a rhinoceros walked onto the road 10 meters from the jeep, I forgot how to breathe. 😶🌫️ A giraffe passed by so close I could see its eyes. And the cheetahs? I captured them through binoculars, and they were just lying on the road as if it were their own personal sofa. 🐆☕ Black and white film works perfectly here—the savannah, the shadows, the silhouettes. Aquila Private Game Reserve is a compact yet highly atmospheric safari park just a short drive from Cape Town. If you're pressed for time and can't make it to the larger, more remote national parks, this is a fantastic alternative. Plus, it's significantly more budget-friendly than many other safari reserves in the region. We opted for an overnight stay, which turned out to be the perfect choice. The room rate included two game drives—one in the evening and one in the morning—along with full board. The culinary offerings were a delightful surprise: we feasted on succulent beef and antelope steaks, melt-in-your-mouth lamb, creamy shrimp curry, and a wide spread of salads and appetizers. Breakfast featured fresh fruits, pastries, and even smoked salmon. The quality and variety of the food were genuinely top-notch. We stayed in cozy cottages with private verandas. While the rooms felt a little dated, they were incredibly comfortable, equipped with cozy blankets, tea-making facilities, and a mini-fridge. The only catch? We had a few little mice visit us in the night, so it's definitely best to avoid keeping food in your room. The evening game drive was truly unforgettable, especially the scenic pit stop for drinks—sipping a glass of champagne right in the heart of the African savanna is an absolute vibe. The morning safari was equally action-packed: we caught sight of wandering hippos, adorable zebras, and a majestic lion. The elephant parade was the real showstopper, looking like something straight out of a movie scene. The only thing missing from our bingo card was the giraffes. The grounds of the reserve and lodge are lush, impeccably maintained, and perfect for a relaxing stroll, complete with a swimming pool. Overall, it was an action-packed and unforgettable getaway—the perfect bite-sized intro to Africa's incredible wildlife. Pro tip: Get there early to catch lunch, which kicks off at noon. We chose to drive ourselves in a rental car, but you can easily book a transfer through the reserve or a travel agency.

We visited the Inverdoorn Game Lodge, located 3 hours outside of Cape Town. The property is small but offers lovely rooms and mini chalets for guests. The rooms was comfortable and exactly what we needed. The food is cooked daily and offers a variety of food that represents the various cultural and ethnic groups of the Western Cape. The highlight of our trip we’re the game drives in the morning and evenings. We were able to see cheetahs, lions, elephants, rhinos, springbok, and so much more. Many of these animals are in the process of being rehabilitated for release into the wile. Conservation and respect for nature is a core tenant to this wonderful lodge. I guess am a slow burner as my first ever safari happened in 2023, but still 😂 My husband and I got the trip to Aquila Private Game Reserve. I knew it wasn’t as huge as the famous Kruger Park, but I was so excited to see the animals. We went on a morning tour and it was FANTASTIC! The guide was amazing, it was like having a guy from National Geographic traveling with you. Oh by the way, they also treated us with breakfast 😉 I fell in love with elephants there and, surprisingly, with giraffes 🤩 Overall it was a wonderful experience, I would definitely recommend it for your first safari!

Never thought I’d find myself jumping out of a plane this year, extremely grateful, surprisingly comforting experience🪂

We stayed for a night at the Aquila Private Game Reserve, and the trip was off to a fantastic start—we were unexpectedly given a room upgrade and offered welcome drinks. Instead of a standard option, we received a large, spacious room with a veranda and a genuine sense of seclusion amidst nature. There was a large bathtub, plus an outdoor shower) The room was equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay, without losing the main appeal: the feeling of being surrounded by the wild. The large windows, the tranquility, and the surrounding landscape set the perfect mood♥️ A special treat was the morning before the safari: we even managed to calmly enjoy a coffee, soaking in the moment before our early departure. The room had a fireplace, which added a cozy touch, though we visited in summer and a warm blanket was quite enough. Especially since the mountain weather here can change very quickly, and there's a chill in the air even during the warmer months. It's definitely worth staying overnight to fully experience this place! Also, our meals were included, offering a great variety, so we had absolutely nothing to worry about)) 🏊 There's also a pool on the premises where you can cool off in the hot weather!

Africa's "Big Five" are the most famous and impressive animals that travelers traditionally hope to spot on a safari: · lion · leopard · elephant · rhino · buffalo Originally, this term was coined by hunters to describe the most difficult and dangerous animals to hunt. Today, however, they are the ultimate symbols of African wildlife. During our safari at the Aquila Private Game Reserve, we didn't manage to see all of them, but it was an unforgettable experience nonetheless. We spotted elephants—massive and serene, rhinos that looked a bit stern, and buffaloes sticking close together in a herd. We also saw lions lounging around, radiating the pure confidence of the true masters of the savanna. Unfortunately, the leopard eluded us. It's a rare and stealthy creature, and spotting one requires a great deal of luck. Even though there are no giraffes at Aquila, it still delivers an authentic safari vibe: wide-open spaces, untamed wildlife, jeep rides, and that unmistakable feeling of being in the heart of the real Africa.

#southar This is our favorite pastry shop in Stellenbosch and arguably the best place to try authentic pastéis de nata. They're worth the trip alone: ​​the crispy puff pastry and soft, creamy filling make these pastries truly unforgettable. The coffee here is quite ordinary, nothing special, but the desserts more than make up for it – they're truly mind-blowing. The atmosphere is cozy and pleasant: there's both indoor and outdoor seating where you can relax and enjoy the pastries. We also tried pastéis de nata at the Vadas branch at Spier Wine Farm. It has a more spacious café format, where, in addition to the famous pastries, you can also try other food – pizza, pastries, and various dishes. In short, Vadas isn't just a coffee shop, but a must-see culinary stop in Stellenbosch for any sweet tooth.

If you’re short on time but would still like to experience South Africa’s wildlife, a quick trip to Aquila Game Reserve could be on the cards for you. I didn’t have enough time to go to Cape Town and Kruger National Park so I chose to go to a game reserve close to Cape Town to get a similar experience. It was really nice and apparently many famous people including Rihanna have made trips to that exact same game reserve. I stayed overnight and on the afternoon cruise we stopped at a sunset point and had champagne and snacks. It was a magical experience ✨

Located at the foot of Simonsberg Mountain, the scenery is picturesque. We highly recommend trying their Lindt chocolate with liqueur—a delightful blend of sweetness and rich aroma. 🦞 Seafood by the Sea: Find any open-air restaurant, sit under a white parasol, and enjoy the sea breeze. South African oysters are cheap and plump, paired with chilled Sauvignon Blanc—this is the perfect way to enjoy a vacation! 🌈 Colorful Houses (Bo-Kaap): Not only are they photogenic, but you must also try the Malay curry—rich in spices and exuding exotic charm. 💡 Useful Tips ✅ Safety: Try to travel in groups and avoid walking alone in non-tourist areas at night. Renting a car is the best option—safe and flexible. ✅ Sun and Wind Protection: South Africa's UV rays are very strong.
