A Quintessential English Gem in the Heart of Wells
A Stunning Step Back in TimeVisiting The Bishop's Palace felt like walking straight into a history book.
This 13th-century medieval palace is completely surrounded by a majestic, water-filled moat. Crossing the ancient drawbridge sets a magical tone for the entire visit. The architecture of the palace itself is remarkably well-preserved, and standing inside the ruined Great Hall offers breathtaking views of the neighboring Wells Cathedral.Immaculate Grounds and Local Traditions. The 14 acres of RHS partner gardens are beautifully maintained, filled with vibrant flowerbeds and the tranquil natural well pools that give the city of Wells its name.
A highlight of the trip was sitting near the lawn to watch members of the Wells Croquet Club playing in their traditional all-white attire against the backdrop of the stone palace facade. Don't forget to look out for the famous resident swans near the Gatehouse—if you are lucky, you can see them ring the bell attached to the wall for food!
Dining: Make time to stop at The Bishop's Table cafe located right on the grounds. They serve excellent coffee, local cider, and fresh cakes with outdoor seating overlooking the croquet lawn.
Plan for at least 2 to 3 hours to fully explore the palace rooms, private chapel, and expansive gardens without rushing.
Accessibility: The paths through the gardens are smooth and very wheelchair-friendly. Dogs are also welcome on leads.

🗺️ Your Palace Plan:
Start by strolling the scenic moat walk—watch for the resident swans (they’re basically palace royalty). Next, explore the medieval palace rooms, then relax in the gardens, where flower borders, wildlife ponds, and secret corners make every turn Insta-worthy. Don’t miss the romantic well pools and the atmospheric ruined chapel—best in soft morning or late afternoon light for epic photos.
🌞 Must-Do Moments:

· Climb the ramparts for panoramic views of Wells Cathedral’s spires.
· Stop for coffee at the on-site café, especially if you’re hoping for peaceful garden vibes.
📸 Top Photo Spots:
· Swans gliding under the stone arches of the moat bridge.
· The ruined chapel framed by wildflowers.
· Reflections of the Palace in the well pools (early mornings are top for mirrorlike shots).
✔️ Insider Tips:
Arrive early (around 10 AM) for fewer crowds and the prettiest lighting; the gardens glow golden. If visiting on a damp day, wear waterproof shoes—the paths can get mushy! Wells is compact, so pair the Palace with a wander to Wells Cathedral next door for a full medieval fix.

The Bishop's Palace & Gardens
#europetrip An interesting collection of items and information about Wells and its Bishop. There are displays detailing 800 years of history. The Palace has gardens to enjoy. We went on a rainy October day and couldn't see a lot from the ramparts due to the mist. However, we would like to return on a clearer day to see if we can spot Glassonbury Tor in the distance.
An adult ticket for the Palace and Gardens is £17.50 but this can give you entry for a year. There are some concessions and family tickets available, and there is a joint ticket that also gives access to the cathedral. That's worth getting if you intend to visit both sites (they're next to each other).
Accessibility is good. The inside of the building is mostly level, and there is a platform lift. There is a clear even path around the gardens. The ramparts are only accessed via stone steps.

Wells Cathedral
#uktrip This cathedral was awesome, I really enjoyed my time here, I arrived at around 9:30 and left near 4. The building was beautiful, there was so much to see, lots of information boards, and not forgetting the second oldest working clock in the world. I will share some clips of my visit to this amazing cathedral on my YouTube channel: urbantiger6540. I'm visiting the area, so I will add the clips onto my video tour of Robin Hood's Hut. It costs £14 to get in, but you can return as many times as you like for the next 12 months, and I will definitely return. I met some friendly people too.

My Trip to the UK
My Trip to the UK
I visited
The Wales Cathedral in the UK was an amazing experience filled with spirituality and history.
I enjoyed talking and taking pictures as much as we could see.
❤️
The cathedral is one of the finest examples of English Gothic architecture,
☺️
with its ornate details and towering spires. I enjoyed wandering through the stained glass reflecting biblical scenes and the spacious hallways.
The light passing through there adds a special beauty to the atmosphere. The ancient astronomical clock inside the cathedral was one of the outstanding monuments that caught my attention with its intricate geometric details.
The surrounding gardens were quiet, giving me time to contemplate and enjoy their beauty.

On this day of departure, there happened to be an event in the church, and colorful lights shone on the stone wall.
It’s really dreamy. There are red maple leaves around the outside of the teaching seat🍁
