But after fully experiencing the whole trip, I genuinely don’t plan to revisit. The reasons are very real. If you’re planning a trip to the Netherlands, be sure to avoid these pitfalls! I have to say, the healing vibe in the Netherlands is truly unique ✨ Being called the Venice of the North is well deserved. Amsterdam is woven together by 160 canals and thousands of small bridges. The waterways wind through old streets, lined with vintage colorful houses. Houseboats quietly dock by the water, and the gentle breeze feels incredibly relaxing. Spring at Keukenhof is the ultimate romance. Vast fields of tulips bloom wildly—red, pink, purple—covering the meadows. The wind creates waves of flowers, and with old-fashioned windmills in the distance, it’s like a fairy tale come to life. Walking along the flower paths, you feel completely wrapped in warmth. The pace of life here is so comfortable. The streets are so clean they almost shine. Sunny days in the Netherlands are rare! Over 200 days a year are cloudy, rainy, or windy. Sunny days are few and far between. Even if you check the weather before your trip, you’re likely to experience sudden clouds, gusts of wind, or occasional light rain. The worst part is the strong wind. Your hair is always blown into a mess. Carefully planned outfits and makeup are instantly ruined. It’s basically impossible to get good photos with atmosphere. You have to bundle up the whole time, and it feels quite cold. If you’re sensitive to cold, your experience will be greatly affected. Second, the travel comfort level is low. Many hotels and guesthouses in the old towns don’t have elevators. The stairs are steep and narrow, making it very difficult to carry large suitcases up and down. Traveling with elderly people, children, or alone can be exhausting. Also, locals prefer drinking cold water. Most restaurants don’t offer hot water. If you want a warm drink, you have to bring your own kettle. This is really unfriendly for Chinese travelers who are used to drinking hot water and have sensitive stomachs. Finally, the pace is too “slow,” which doesn’t suit short trips. The overall pace in the Netherlands is quite lazy. Shops close early, and the streets become quiet after dusk. Cruising slowly along the canals, we got to hear a lot about Amsterdam's history and urban stories. Compared to just walking around by yourself, seeing the city from the water offers a completely different perspective. I think it’s highly worth adding to your plans. As for the museums, we split the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum over two separate days. The Rijksmuseum organizes its exhibits by era, featuring a wide mix of items like fine art, crafts, and a small collection of Asian artifacts, though it primarily focuses on European exhibits. If you enjoy taking your time to appreciate history, art, and craftsmanship, this place will be right up your alley. The Van Gogh Museum is much more focused. The exhibits follow the chronological timeline of Van Gogh’s life, making it much easier to digest. It houses many of his famous masterpieces, including "Sunflowers" and self-portraits from various periods. However, "The Starry Night" isn't in this Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam—it's actually at the MoMA in New York. Unless you plan to meticulously study every single painting, I’d say budgeting about 3–4 hours for each museum is enough to cover the highlights. Of course, if you're a massive art lover, you could easily spend way more time at the Rijksmuseum. Overall, you don't have to pack your Amsterdam itinerary to the brim. Spending one day exploring the city center and taking a canal cruise, and dedicating two separate days for the museums makes for a much more relaxing pace. For a first-time trip to Amsterdam, I think this slow-paced, leisurely approach is ideal. It keeps things from getting too rushed while letting you fully soak in the city, the canals, and the artistic atmosphere. Independent Travel City Center Snacks

Our European trip this time covered Belgium, Luxembourg, and Amsterdam. We didn't really focus on hitting every single tourist spot. Instead, we took it easy, wandering around city centers, grabbing bites to eat, exploring a few nearby towns, and just soaking in the local vibes at a relaxed pace. For the first half of the trip, we stayed in Brussels for four nights. It was super convenient to use Brussels as our home base for day trips. On our first day, we mostly explored the city center. The Grand-Place is truly spectacular and gives off that classic European plaza feel. Of course, since we were in Belgium, we had to get a pot of mussels and sip on some Belgian beer—basically checking off the must-do list. Later on, we visited Bruges and Ghent. Bruges feels straight out of a fairytale with its charming streets, belfry, horse-drawn carriages, and canals, all giving it a rich historic atmosphere. We took a canal cruise there, taking our time to admire the old architecture along the banks, and then treated ourselves to a beer flight. It was such a lovely, laid-back day. Ghent, on the other hand, felt a bit more lived-in. It has a stronger urban vibe compared to Bruges but is just as packed with stunning buildings and church towers. We found an outdoor bar in Ghent, ordered some cheese and ham, and paired it with white wine. After a long walk, sitting down to enjoy a slow meal was incredibly chill. One day, we joined a guided day tour to Luxembourg and Dinant. We only spent about two hours in Luxembourg, and most of that time went to having lunch. So, we basically just took a quick stroll around the Upper City to get a feel for the place. The city itself is really clean and pleasant, but we definitely didn't get to explore it in depth this time. Dinant, however, turned out to be a bigger surprise than I expected. The combination of the riverside, the church, and the citadel perched on the cliff creates such a layered, picturesque landscape. We had a great time taking a slow walk along the river. The whole vibe was super chill—no rushing from one attraction to the next, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll and snapping some photos. After that, we hopped on a FlixBus to Amsterdam and stayed there for three nights. In Amsterdam, we mostly wandered around the city center, checked out the Royal Palace and Central Station, snacked on fries and Dutch pancakes, and visited the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. We also squeezed in a half-day trip to Zaandam to see the colorful suburban houses and windmills. Overall, this itinerary wasn't overly packed at all. It felt more like basing ourselves in Brussels and then making a slow transition to Amsterdam. It's perfect for anyone who wants to visit multiple cities in one go without the stress of rushing through tourist spots every single day.
