The beautiful coast of Gargano
One of the highlights of my trip to Puglia was exploring the Gargano coastline by boat.
If you’re wondering whether it’s worth it, my answer is a definite yes 😍
The trip starts in Vieste, where you get beautiful views of the old town, the lighthouse and the coastline before sailing towards some of Gargano’s most spectacular natural landmarks.
Over the next few hours, we explored several sea caves carved into the white limestone cliffs. Some were closed, others had one or two openings in the ceiling. Seeing these formations up close from the water was something you simply can’t experience from land.
We also passed the impressive Arch of San Felice before reaching my favourite part: Spiaggia Vignanotica. Arriving by sea completely changes your perspective. The towering white cliffs look even more dramatic, making the beach feel tiny in comparison.
We anchored just offshore and had almost one hour to swim in the most beautiful turquoise water.
If you’re planning a trip to Gargano, I’d genuinely recommend setting aside part of your budget to experience it by boat. It lets you discover hidden corners of the coastline that are inaccessible by land and, for me, it became one of the most memorable experiences of the whole trip.

🌊🏖️ Vieste: Pearl of the Gargano Peninsula
#mediterranean
Perched on a white limestone cliff overlooking the Adriatic, Vieste is one of Puglia’s most stunning seaside towns. Its old town is a labyrinth of narrow lanes, arches, and whitewashed houses that tumble down toward turquoise waters. From the historic Castello Svevo to the striking Pizzomunno sea stack, Vieste blends history with breathtaking coastal scenery.
The beaches are the real highlight: long golden stretches like Spiaggia di San Lorenzo and Spiaggia del Castello invite for lazy sunbathing, while small hidden coves offer quiet escapes. A boat trip along the Gargano coast reveals dramatic cliffs, caves, and secret beaches you can only reach from the sea.
📍 Location: Puglia, Italy
🕒 Best Time to Visit: May–September for warm seas and lively atmosphere
💡 Tips:
· Climb up to the cathedral for panoramic sea views.
· Take a boat tour to discover the Gargano sea caves.
· Try local seafood — especially fresh octopus and “orecchiette” pasta.

#mynovgetaway Vieste is a coastal town in Gargano National Park, in southeast Italy. It’s known for its beaches, like Scialara, home to the imposing Pizzomunno limestone monolith, and the broad Spiaggia di San Lorenzo. Marine fossils and rare shells are on display at the Museum of Malacology. Nearby are the Castello Svevo, a medieval fortress, and the 11th-century Vieste Cathedral, with its baroque bell tower and painted ceiling. In medieval times, the port was frequently attacked by pirates, Saracens and other enemies of the Kingdom of Naples.
In 1554 around 7,000 inhabitants were enslaved by the Turks, with those being deemed too elderly or infirm to merit transportation into slavery executed. This event is commemorated annually in a ceremony.
