2026 Uxmal Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in August)

🪄As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Uxmal is less accessible due to its remote location, and is not as famous as Chichen Itza, which is also on the Yucatan Peninsula and a representative of the Maya culture. The architectural complex of Uxmal is actually better preserved and allows for climbing to get a panoramic view. Standing atop, one feels like Columbus discovering a new world, which is quite impressive👍 🪄The first thing you see when entering the ancient city is the tallest Pyramid of the Magician, named after the legend that it was built overnight by a magician. It stands 35 meters high and has a rare elliptical shape. It was built around 700 AD, which is later than Chichen Itza, and is the most beautiful I have seen in Mexico, but climbing is no longer allowed🥀 🪄Another noteworthy structure is the Governor's Palace, whose facade is made up of intricately carved stone blocks forming the mask of the feathered serpent god🎭. It is said that the mask appears over 150 times without any discrepancy, isn't that cool? 🪄Funny enough, because the steps were so steep, my legs turned to jelly while climbing. I had to crawl up on all fours, and when coming down, I was so dizzy😵 that I had to sit on the steps and scoot down one by one, fearing I might tumble down and make a fool of myself. It turns out that even I, who have bungee jumped off the Macau Tower, can have a fear of heights, haha. 🚌If you come to the Yucatan Peninsula, I strongly recommend spending a day at Uxmal. It takes about 2 hours from Merida, and don't miss your stop at Uxmal. Also, I highly recommend the ADO bus🚌 for travel in Mexico; it's cheap and has many departures, and you can buy tickets directly on their website. ⏰A reminder for those on a self-driving tour in eastern Mexico: you may often be stopped by police👮 asking for money. Besides the language barrier making communication difficult, if you don't pay, they might take you straight to the police station. This is something to be especially aware of when traveling on the Yucatan Peninsula.

Mexico is tempting to overpack. Mexico City, Oaxaca and the Yucatán Peninsula all sound like first-trip essentials — but they are not one compact sightseeing corridor. The key question is not “how many famous places can I add?” It is: Which region actually fits your usable days? 🧭 QUICK ANSWER 5–6 usable days: Stay with Mexico City. 7 usable days: Mexico City + compact Oaxaca can work — but keep it tight. 10 usable days: Choose Oaxaca OR the Yucatán Peninsula. 12 usable days: Use the extra time for depth, not another region. 14 usable days: Mexico City + Oaxaca + one peninsula purpose becomes possible. 15+ usable days: Better if you want Oaxaca, interior Yucatán and Caribbean recovery. ⏳ WHAT COUNTS AS A USABLE DAY? Do not count only hotel nights. A late arrival, domestic flight, long coach transfer or final departure day can easily reduce what you can actually enjoy. A 10-night trip may not give you 10 real planning days. That difference matters in Mexico. 🏙️ WHY START WITH MEXICO CITY? Mexico City deserves real time. It is not just the airport. A balanced first stay can include: · historic Mexico City · Reforma and Chapultepec · neighbourhood dining · museums or urban culture · one major excursion such as Teotihuacán Good first-timer stay areas include: · Roma / Condesa for the easiest all-round base · Reforma / Juárez for hotels and transport balance · Polanco for a premium, museum and family-friendly feel · Centro Histórico for heritage access, with more block-by-block care You do not need a rental car in Mexico City by default. 🌮 WHEN OAXACA MAKES SENSE Choose Oaxaca if you want: · cultural depth · a walkable historic city · regional food culture · markets, craft and atmosphere · Monte Albán from a city base For most first-timers, Oaxaca works best as a city-based extension. Three nights is the stronger minimum. Two nights can work, but only if arrival and departure times are kind. Important: Oaxaca City and the Oaxaca coast are separate decisions. Do not add Puerto Escondido as a quick side trip just because it looks close on a map. 🗿 WHEN THE YUCATÁN PENINSULA MAKES SENSE Use “Yucatán Peninsula” carefully. It can mean two different trip purposes. 1️⃣ Interior culture + Maya sites Think Mérida, Valladolid, Chichén Itzá, Uxmal and cenotes. This is better for travellers who want regional cities, archaeology and inland culture. 2️⃣ Caribbean recovery Think Cancún, Playa del Carmen or Tulum. This is better when you want beach time, resort convenience or a softer ending after city travel. Cancún, Mérida, Valladolid, Playa del Carmen and Tulum are not interchangeable bases. Different base, different trip purpose. ✈️ WHY DOMESTIC FLIGHTS MATTER Flights help bridge Mexico’s distance. But they do not make the distance disappear. Stéphan’s organization was flawless and met our expectations perfectly. The hotel was very charming, with a dive center conveniently located on site. After a day to acclimate, we enjoyed four twotankdive cycles: encounters with sharks, diving at the reef, exploring caves in Cenote, and a day trip to Cozumel. Nicolas’s guidance even reignited my wife’s passion for diving. At the reception, Anni also went above and beyond to ensure our satisfaction. The road trip planned by Stéphan (5 days, 4 nights, with return to the hotel) included wonderful hotel stops (Valladolid, Merida, Uxmal). The visit to the Maya Museum starting from Merida was particularly noteworthy. A huge thanks to the entire team – we loved the pace and overall experience. Standing in front of it, you can really feel the mystery and legends tied to its name. Walking around the base gives you amazing angles for photos and a strong sense of how advanced Mayan architecture was. The whole Uxmal site feels calm and spacious, making it easy to explore without feeling rushed. There is something peaceful about the open courtyards and detailed stone carvings nearby. It can get hot, but the atmosphere makes it worth it. Even without climbing to the top, the pyramid leaves a strong impression and feels powerful, unique, and unforgettable.

It's about an hour by bus from Merida. Even if you take your time to explore the area, it takes just under two hours. The ruins are lush and pleasant. It's amazing that the reliefs remain intact despite the wind and rain! The return bus is at 3:15pm, so we had some time to kill and headed to Chocolate Story. However, since we still had some time left, it might be more efficient to take a taxi to Una and then take the bus back from Una.

📍 Mérida is a beautiful city in Yucatan. Close to a lot of attractions- pyramids, cenotes and even beach 🚩 Because it has an import it’s a perfect starting point for your travel around Peninsula. Starting from Merida you go to Valladolid- another Pueblo Magico. Don’t forget to visit Izamal on your way. Uxmal was amazing! The pyramids are super cool, and the whole place feels really peaceful. The Pyramid of the Magician is the standout and looks so huge. I loved just walking around and exploring at my own pace. Uxmal pyramids have lots of details and carvings on the walls, I spent quite some time looking up close to all those little details. A quick tip: try to go early or later in the day to avoid the heat. Wear comfy shoes, too, because there’s a lot of walking.
