It’s also famous for its unique worship etiquette: "two bows, four claps, one bow." The designated National Treasure main hall and the beautiful vermilion pavilions are spectacular. It’s a must-visit spiritual power spot when traveling to Oita. ♨️ Beppu Onsen A hot spring city boasting the largest number of hot spring sources and the highest yield of hot spring water in Japan. Plumes of steam rising throughout the city create a landscape unique to Beppu. On the "Jigoku Meguri" (Hell Tour), you can see incredibly unique hot springs like the Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) and Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell), while enjoying hot spring-boiled eggs and "Jigoku-mushi" (hell-steamed) delicacies. The weather was fantastic that day, with blue skies and white clouds, making the entire trip feel especially relaxing. Our family of four chose to drive ourselves into the park, which is truly the most convenient option for families with kids. If you opt for the self-driving mode to explore the animal area, the whole experience takes about 60–90 minutes, allowing you to leisurely observe lions, giraffes, zebras, and other large animals up close. The kids were thrilled throughout the visit. 📌 Friendly Reminder 🔔 During the self-driving tour, you cannot open car windows or feed the animals yourself. The safety rules are quite strict. If you want to experience feeding the animals, make sure to choose the Jungle Bus, led by staff members. [Hotel AZ Ajimu] Although this is a business hotel, it was formerly a tourist hotel, so the rooms are relatively spacious and comfortable. ✨ The building itself is a little dated, but it was well-maintained and I didn't experience any inconveniences during my stay. On this self-drive trip, we traveled from Fukuoka to Yufuin, enjoying the beautiful natural scenery along the way. The roads were not crowded, making the drive very comfortable. However, traveling with children can be challenging due to the long distances, so it's best to plan a stop at an attraction to stretch and take a break. That's why we included a visit to the Kuju Natural Zoological Park midway. The zoo is easy to find, and the animals are mostly free-roaming in their natural habitats, not confined to cages. The best way to tour is by vehicle. You can either take the park's sightseeing bus to view and feed the animals or drive your own car through the park, but you must keep the windows closed. We chose the latter, so we'll have to wait until next time to see the lions and tigers up close. The park wasn't too crowded when we visited, so even with self-driving, there was no traffic congestion. After seeing the savannah animals, you can also visit the indoor salon to pet dogs or cats, and for an additional fee, feed the ponies. These activities are separate from the car tour but offer a full experience, and the kids had a lot of fun. Petting the cats is not highly recommended, as they were mostly sleeping, and we didn't want to disturb them; it's better to just watch from a distance. It may not be very famous nationwide, but the height of the waterfall, the volume of water, and the pool at the bottom are quite impressive. It's about a 20-minute walk from the parking lot, and there is a promenade, so even the elderly and children can go there without difficulty. When you see it up close, it's so big that the whole waterfall doesn't fit in a photo. The pool at the bottom is deep, so don't swim there by mistake. If you are traveling to Fukuoka, make sure to venture out to the outskirts for a day or two 🇯🇵💨 If I had to pick just three places I personally visited on this trip and thought, “I’m so glad I included this!” ♨️ Yufuin Seian Ryokan 🔥 Beppu Onsen 🦁 African Safari Like this! I stayed at Seian Ryokan in Yufuin for one night, and it was the most memorable place of this trip 🤍 After soaking in the hot springs, having a Kaiseki dinner, and leisurely enjoying breakfast the next day, the day spent at the accommodation itself felt like a trip. If you are considering a ryokan in Yufuin, I highly recommend Seian ♨️ And then, head over to Beppu to enjoy the hot springs as well! From the scenery with steam rising from everywhere, it was a place that made me think, “Ah, I’ve really arrived in a hot spring town…” lol The atmosphere was quite different from Yufuin, so I’m glad I combined the two places for a visit 🔥 And the unexpected real fun was the African Safari 🦁 You can tour the safari in a vehicle and see the animals up close, and it was much more fun than I expected, so it’s a course I definitely want to recommend for this trip!
