This time I want to introduce Uluru, a place in central Australia. I flew from Melbourne to Ayres Rock Airport, and the flight only took about three hours. Seeing the huge rock Uluru on the plane is very different from seeing it on the ground. Only by personal experience can you know how shocking it is. During the three-day trip to Uluru, because I didn’t know how to drive, I rented a car and had a tour guide to explain the whole journey. However, it was the winter off-season, so it became a private tour. The sunrise and sunset scenery at Uluru are very different. The sunrise is orange-red and the sunset is fiery red, which is very special. Unfortunately, Uluru can no longer be climbed due to too many accidents, so we decided to join the Kings Canyon English tour group. Climbing the Valley of the Kings is not easy either. Starting at four in the morning, each person has to carry 2 liters of drinking water up the valley, and has to climb 500 stairs in the desert under the scorching sun before starting the official 4-hour hike. The final walk at the Uluru tour is a visit to the kitchen cave. As kulpi minymaku in the native language, the kitchen cave is the province of the women, who also camped around this area. When it comes down to food, the division of labor is also clear as between men and women. The men brought over the meat of the games they hunted. Women took the girls along in search of bush tucker in the wild. For the girls’ training, the mothers imparted upon them the knowledge of the bush tucker and what was safely edible. This is the knowledge that is expected upon the aboriginal girls and it is passed down as age old wisdom of survival (even now). For there are poisonous fruits in the wild. Once picking the edible bush tucker, then the women and the girls would be cooking at the kitchen cave, where they pounded the seeds (such as the Mulga Tree seeds) with round stones. The resulting flour was then made into flatbread. The menu would feature the flatbread, meat, fruits (such as the sweet native fig and bush plum) and other bush tuckers. When the men brought over the game of the day, the community gathered to share food. The families took their share of the food home to the older members of the community. Everybody was taken care of. On the floor of the kitchen cave one can still see the smooth surface that resulted from the stone pounding in making flour. But a basic understanding of the geology of the rock is another way to appreciate the Uluru. Within its embrace the Uluru reveals its essence in the minute geological details that stretch one’s imagination. Perhaps in so many words I will explain briefly the geology of the Uluru. It is established science that the Uluru and the neighboring Kata Tjuṯa rocky mount are of different compositions. The rock that makes up the Uluru is arkose, a coarse sandstone with crystal structure and consisted of high contents of the mineral feldspar. There is also 24% iron content in the sediments, and that is the agent that gives the rock its rusty crimson surface. Kata Tjuṯa is a conglomerate consisting of gravels, with large, grainy and coarse surface. There were two significant geological events that resulted in the geological landscape that we see today. In this part of Australia, the Amadeus basin, which is now a salt lake, was a geological depression where lots of sediments deposited 900 million years ago into the shallow sea then. About 550 million years ago, the Petermann Orogeny resulted in the Petermann Ranges. Layers of sediments at the basin were crumpled and buckled, then pushed up. The Petermann Orogeny resulted in mountains as high as the Himalayas today. But erosions were severe at the Petermann Ranges because there were no vegetation or trees at the time. This in turn deposited an enormous trove of rock sediments down to the plains, forming alluvial fans, which would become the bases upon which both the Uluru and the Kata Tjuta formed. In the case of the Uluru, fine sediment sandstones resulted. The inland sea in the area 500 million years ago receded, then the Alice Springs Orogeny followed about 300 million years ago. Again, the orogeny fractured and pushed the sandstone layers that lie at the core of the Uluru upward. For Uluru, the alluvial fans were pushed upward as far as 90 degrees. The Uluru that we see now emerged. Since the Alice Springs Orogeny, the landcrust movements slowed down. The Uluru is layers of sandstone compressed underground. At its highest point, the Uluru measures 348 meters in height. The true wonders of these geological formations are buried, however. The “root” of the Uluru reaches 5 kilometers underground. Up close, the Uluru is nothing like what one sees from afar, when the monolith stands as one enormous structure. At the Uluru, one might not readily recognize its color — even the signature rusty red surface felt different — let alone being enclosed within the myriad folds of the rock faces that gives an impression of malleability, like the ruffles of a silky party dress. When viewing the Uluru from within, its morphing rockfaces felt almost feminine. Our first adventure at the Uluru was the Kuniya Walk. Tjukurpa (pronounced “chook-orr-pa”) is a religion-based philosophy encompassing the initial world views, laws and mores for the two aboriginal peoples of Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara, together known as the Anangu peoples. It lies at the foundation of Anangu culture. While the westerners call it Dreamtime, the aborigines take offense at the suggestion that the stories are mere myths. For the people hold the Tjukurpa as every bit of their truth as the Bible is for the Christians in the world. At the Kuniya Walk, we learned the details of the aboriginal way of life, seeing some significant rock art, the sacred Mutitjulu Waterhole and hearing fundamental Creation Stories that govern their beliefs. The walk is 1km in distance and there is no climbing at all. On the Kuniya Walk you will be led through many aboriginal rock paintings. A lot of these paintings have survived 5,000 years, but there were also paintings from the 1950s. The science of the durability of the painting is one of age-old practice. The aborigines mix the charcoal and ashes of the desert oak tree, blood, water and oil to make their paintings. The aboriginal children learn at a tender age about the meaning of the paintings, especially how each individual pictorial representation bear what meaning. The paintings often serve as critical indicators that concern survival, especially with regards to water and food sources. Otherwise, they stand as living instructions to the aborigines there. The Anangu peoples express clear disapproval of the word Dreamtime or Dreaming to describe the Tjukurpa. As discussed before, some of these stories have such a sacredness that they cannot be retold to people outside of the tribe. There is explicit instruction on the uluru.gov.au website not to replicate or retell the story of Kuniya, and I shall respect that. Suffice it is to say that Kuniya is a woman that is an Ancestral Being of the Anangu peoples. Just landed in Australia and got frozen stiff 😭 Online, most people advise against going to Australia in July and August, saying it’s cold, windy, and gets dark early. But I want to say—don’t blindly discourage it! July and August in Australia are actually amazing for regular travelers! Avoid the crowds, get half-price flights and hotels, enjoy peak whale watching season, and the Great Barrier Reef is clearest all year. Just skip the south and focus on the north for a fully loaded experience✨ ❌ Let’s be honest first | The real reasons people advise against Australia in July and August (no sugarcoating) Many people have a bad time because they go to the wrong cities!! The south is really freezing (Sydney/Melbourne/Great Ocean Road/Tasmania): It’s winter in Australia! Daytime temps are 5–16℃ with strong winds. The sea breeze on the Great Ocean Road can numb your fingers, the beaches are gray and dull without the summer blue skies and clear seas, so photos don’t come out well. It gets dark too early: by 4:30 PM it’s already dark, leaving little time for activities and tiring travel.
