According to Hindu legend, Haridwar is one of four places in India where drops of the nectar of immortality, carried by Garuda after the churning of the Ocean of Milk by devas and asuras, fell. Since then, these four places—Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik, and Allahabad—have hosted the Kumbha Mela, a major Hindu festival that attracts millions of pilgrims and tourists from around the world every three years.
