Tropea was truly a huge surprise for me on this trip~ I originally just didn't want to drive for seven hours straight by myself—it was too exhausting—so I wanted to find a stopover before heading to Sicily. Unexpectedly, it really is a hidden gem in Calabria! This small town of fewer than 7,000 people has one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy and is "Blue Flag" certified, but it's just too low-key and rarely advertised to the outside world. That's why it's a traditional vacation spot for Italian locals; there are very few foreign tourists, and we were the only Asian faces. The town isn't big and can be explored in a day, but it has complete tourist facilities. The old town is full of guesthouses, cafes, and restaurants. It's uncrowded and beautiful, and the prices, compared to Capri, have finally returned to earth! Here are a few must-visit spots: 📍The town's central square, where you can overlook the coastline and the sanctuary on the rock. There is a gelato shop here where both the gelato and affogato are delicious. It also has an excellent location, situated above the cliff coastline, facing the sanctuary directly—it's super beautiful for watching the sunset. 📍Santa Maria dell'Isola, the cliffside sanctuary church on the island: Follow the stone steps down from the central square to reach the sanctuary and the beach. This church has a thousand-year history and was once a refuge for hermits and Byzantine monks. It is also a famous local landmark. 📍Small beach (Spiaggia Mare Piccolo): The beach below the sanctuary is a "Blue Flag" certified beach. The water is clear and layered, from light green to deep blue, just like jelly! However, there are no umbrellas or beach chairs here, so you need to bring your own. It's suitable for people who like to swim. 📍Big beach (Spiaggia Mare Grande): The city's main beach is also very beautiful. There are even free umbrellas and beach chairs (I thought they were paid at first, but to my surprise, they were free). There are shops selling drinks and snacks, making it more suitable for just lying back and relaxing.

With its stunning beaches, turquoise waters, and rich history, this seaside town embodies the perfect blend of relaxation and discovery. As I arrived, the first thing that caught my eye was the breathtaking contrast between the golden-hued cliffs and the shimmering blue sea. Perched atop these cliffs was the historic center of Tropea, a maze of narrow streets, charming piazzas, and centuries-old palazzi. The heart of the town pulsed with Italian charm—cafés spilling onto cobblestone streets, small boutiques offering handmade crafts, and the aroma of fresh seafood drifting through the air. One of the highlights of my visit was the famous Santuario di Santa Maria dell’Isola, a stunning monastery perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea. Climbing up to the sanctuary rewarded me with panoramic views of the coastline, where the deep blues of the Tyrrhenian Sea stretched endlessly under the golden sun. The sight was mesmerizing, a reminder of nature’s artistry combined with human history. Of course, no visit to Tropea would be complete without experiencing its legendary beaches. I made my way down to Spiaggia di Tropea, where soft white sands met crystal-clear waters in shades of turquoise and sapphire. The warm Mediterranean sun, the gentle sound of waves, and the refreshing sea breeze created the perfect setting to unwind. Swimming in these pristine waters felt almost surreal, like floating in a natural paradise. Beyond the landscapes, Tropea’s culinary scene was another unforgettable part of the experience. I indulged in local specialties like ’Nduja, a spicy spreadable sausage unique to Calabria, and the region’s famous red onions, which added a sweet and rich flavor to many dishes. But the real treat was the gelato, best enjoyed while strolling through the lively streets as the evening lights cast a golden glow over the town. With each bite of the creamy, flavorful gelato—especially the local favorite, cipolla rossa (red onion) gelato, surprisingly sweet and delicious—I felt more connected to the essence of Tropea’s unique traditions. As the sun began to set, I found a spot along the Belvedere Piazza Cannone, a scenic overlook that offered a postcard-perfect view of the sea and the silhouette of Santa Maria dell’Isola against the fiery sky. The atmosphere was magical—locals and visitors alike gathered to take in the breathtaking sight, chatting softly as the sky transitioned from orange to deep purple. It was the kind of moment that made me want to pause time, to soak in the beauty of this coastal paradise just a little longer. Tropea is more than just a picturesque beach town; it’s a place where history, culture, and nature come together in perfect harmony. Whether wandering its charming streets, gazing at panoramic views from its cliffs, or basking in the warm Mediterranean waters.

During the week-long exploration of Calabria. I stopped by Tropea for two nights. I was surprised that i didn't run into many or even foreign travellers during those two days. Well naturally sometimes you can't tell unless you've spoken. But with Tropea, the Italian tourists know its value. It seems on a foreign travellers itinerary it rarely receives a mention. So anywho i hung out with some locals and picked up hints on when people recommended what to do. In terms of first impressions, you have a lovely city set atop a cliff, the weather was bright and sunny, sandy beaches to lay on and turquoise blue water. Compared to my time in Amalfi, the beaches here felt more spacious and it had the elements of an Italian holiday. Not to forget, the prices were amongst the best i found in seaside towns. Actually quite good. Amongst my favourite experiences were the old town. As always i walked all around it. I have to say though that it's too many stairs as you navigate from the old town to the beach and then the beach to elsewhere. One of the interesting tours i went on was that of an onion farm. It seems the red onions of Tropea are really famous. So that was interesting. You'll find plenty more ways to spend your time here i mean the beach too can eat up most of your day. Then there is even food and night life. And yes if I may recommend, do try the boat trip to capo vaticano. Needed a proper break from the postgrad grind in Dublin, so I ended up booking a massive 15-day loop around Greece, Italy, and Malta. Absolute madness but honestly the best thing I've done all year. Started off in Athens watching the sunset over the Acropolis which was unreal, and then headed down to Santorini to see those postcard-perfect blue domes. The views are actually insane, I'd love to go back there when I have a bit more cash. The absolute highlight for me was Sicily though, especially being a massive film nerd who spends half his life watching movies. I got to walk along the beach in Cefalù where they filmed Cinema Paradiso—literally sat on the pier listening to the soundtrack on my headphones—and then wandered around the massive square in Syracuse from Malèna. In between all the film scouting, I managed to stuff my face with proper wood-fired pizza in Naples and explore the ruins of Pompeii, which was mind-blowing. Finished up the trip in Malta swimming in the Blue Lagoon at Comino. The water there is so clear it actually looks like glass, and Valletta is full of these cool historic streets with green balconies and old limestone buildings. It was grand just switching my brain off for a few days before flying back to reality and college. Definitely recommend doing this route if you want a mix of sun, history, and great films. 🍕
