The train from vilnius took around 30 minutes. Trakai castle is 2.3 km from the train station. Across the street from the train station, is the lake. A man with his boat was there to offer visitors a ride to the castle for €5. It seemed good value and an opportunity to see the area from the water. it was a beautiful day and the water was Blue and refreshing. The approach to the castle felt special. The entrance fee to the Red Brick castle was €14 ( €7 for concession). it was well worth it. The museum consists of various rooms with various objects and furnishings. From the courtyard you climb a set of stairs which leads to the drawbridge and the castle. you can visit 3 floors of the castle. On the day I went, there were a lot of groups and school children visiting. I thoroughly enjoyed looking around the castle and taking the views. There are parts that are not yet opened to the public. After my visit, I walked across the bridge towards the town centre and the train station. There are lots of restaurants and cafes by the lake . Most of the houses are wooden - the best way to keep warm during winter and facing the lake. I found a little seculed jetty and sat there for a while enjoying the tranquility. Fir lunch I stopped at a restaurant and had potato pancakes with sour cream & bacon. I wanted to try the famous kibinai Pastry stuffed with meat, but it wasn't on the menu. After lunch, I walked back to the train station and took an earlier train to vilnius as there was nothing else to see in Trakai. initially, I had planned to stay one night in Trakai but looking at the accommodation prices, it made more sense to stay in my apartment in vilnius for an extra night and make Trakai a day trip. Trakai is famous for its castle and being by water.
