Upon entering the mountain gates, the first thing that catches your eye is the intricately carved stone archway and the heavy blue brick and red walls, shrouded in morning mist, adding a touch of solemnity. Built during the Northern Wei Dynasty, this temple, dedicated to the deity of Hengshan, one of the Five Sacred Mountains, has been a constant source of worship throughout the ages, witnessing the passage of countless dynasties. Slowly ascending the bluestone path, you'll find layers of ancient temples, their painted beams still visible. The vicissitudes of time are etched within the magnificent splendor. The curling air of incense and the clatter of wooden clappers within the halls create a tranquil and natural atmosphere. Looking up, the soaring eaves of the roof seem to reach the sky, echoing against the distant mountains. As you leave, the long, lingering sound of the bells still lingers in your ears, leaving this ancient charm deeply engraved in your heart.

During a weekend trip around Baoding, we just found this little but beautiful temple in the deep mountain which is called “仙人寺”. Local people told us that the temple was built some hundreds years ago, but was completely destroyed during the Great Cultural Revolution in China in 1970’. Last week, I drove to Baoding and finally visited Quyang County to see the Northern Sacred Mountain Temple (Beiyue Temple) that I had been longing to visit. Before the Ming Dynasty, all sacrificial ceremonies for Mount Heng, the Northern Sacred Mountain, were held at Beiyue Temple in Quyang. It wasn't until the Shunzhi period of the Qing Dynasty that ceremonies were moved to Hunyuan, Shanxi. This shows the temple's significant role in imperial ceremonies from its establishment during Emperor Xuanwu's reign in the Northern Wei Dynasty until the Shunzhi period. At Beiyue Temple, there are three highlights you shouldn't miss: the Dening Hall, the Heavenly Palace mural, and the stone inscriptions. The Dening Hall, the largest and highest-ranking surviving Yuan Dynasty official wooden structure, served as the main hall for official ceremonies to the Northern Sacred Mountain. While inheriting architectural traditions from the Song and Jin dynasties, it features distinctive Yuan Dynasty characteristics. The exquisite Heavenly Palace mural inside the hall is a masterpiece. Known for its artistic excellence and ethereal style, the mural depicts 286 deities arranged in hierarchical layers around the central figure of the Great Emperor of the Northern Peak. This grand Taoist scene, together with the murals in the Sanqing Hall of Yongle Palace in Shanxi, are known as the Twin Treasures of Yuan Dynasty Taoist Murals. On the lawn and along the pathways of Beiyue Temple, over 100 stone inscriptions from seven dynasties - Northern Wei, Tang, Song, Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing - are displayed. These form a tangible textbook of Chinese calligraphy history and an open-air museum of calligraphic art. The inscriptions include works by masters such as Zhao Mengfu, Huaisu, and Dong Qichang, serving as stone archives of historical documents. ☀️Useful Tips☀️ 1️⃣Beiyue Temple has a Quyang Museum which, though small, is worth visiting. It's hidden and easy to miss. 2️⃣Admission is 40 yuan per person, but sometimes it's reduced to 20 yuan when Dening Hall is closed for maintenance.

The Great Ci'en Pavilion (Zhenjue Chan Temple) is located on the north side of Yu Hua Road in Baoding City, Hebei Province. It is listed as the first of the "Eight Scenic Spots of Baoding" for its "City Pavilion Reaching the Sky" and is a national key cultural relic protection unit. The Great Ci'en Pavilion was first built in the third year of Chunhua in the Northern Song Dynasty (992) and was rebuilt in the fourth year of Da Zheng in the Jin Dynasty (1227). The Great Ci'en Pavilion covers an area of 1,600 square meters, with a building area of 600 square meters. The existing buildings include the mountain gate, the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the bell tower, the drum tower, the Great Ci'en Pavilion, and the Guan Di Temple. The main building, the main hall pavilion (Great Ci'en Pavilion), was built initially. The Great Ci'en Pavilion is the main building of Zhenjue Chan Temple. This ancient temple from the Liao Dynasty, hidden deep in the ancient village of Gaobeidian City, Baoding, Hebei Province, now looks like amber frozen in time in the freezing temperature of zero degrees. When I walked into the faded red lacquer door, I was greeted by not only the subtle fragrance of pine and cypress, but also a mysterious tremor that spanned ancient and modern times. Although I was freezing, my heart was burning because it was worth it. … On a morning in the second year of Chongxi in the Liao Dynasty (1033), when the first wooden beam was joined by mortise and tenon joints, the craftsmen probably never imagined that this hall would travel through ten centuries of spring and autumn and meet us in the chilly spring of 2025. At this moment, it is taking on the northern wind in the most relaxed posture. …… ✨Kaishan Temple is commonly known as Dafo Temple. According to the "Xincheng County Chronicles", Kaishan Temple was built during the Kaiyuan period of the Tang Dynasty, and the main hall was built in the second year of the Chongxi period of the Liao Dynasty (1033). There are only three single buildings left. The Mountain Gate Hall, Heavenly King Hall and Main Hall are arranged in sequence from south to north. There is also a piece of remaining stone carvings in the courtyard. This is all of Kaishan Temple today. During the Cultural Revolution, cultural relics were generally destroyed, but Kaishan Temple was spared because it was used as a granary. The other one was lying quietly in a dark corner nearby. Its face couldn't be seen clearly, and it looked a little pitiful. 5️⃣You can vaguely see faded mural patterns on the arch above the back door of the main hall, and a few blurry words are engraved on the pillar on the left, "Three people on July 19, the first year of Zhishun", the ancients visited here! … When I put my frozen palms on the wooden door of the hall to feel the pulse of the wood grain, the body temperature of modern people resonated with the thousand-year-old wood, and I suddenly understood that architecture is not only a container of space, but also a messenger of time. When I left, I looked back again. The outline of the hall seemed more solemn in the cold light, but the arcs drawn by the flying eaves and brackets were as light as when it was first built. Suddenly I understood that truly great buildings never need a greenhouse to worship them, just like those ancient souls that become clearer in the cold wind. When An'guo is mentioned, many people think of the "medicine capital." As a thousand-year-old medicine capital, An'guo's Yaowang Temple is very famous. Yaowang Temple is dedicated to Pi Tong, a famous general of the Eastern Han Dynasty and one of the 28 generals of Yuntai. Pi Tong's courtesy name was Weijun, and he was from Xindu County, Xindu County (now Jizhou District, Hengshui City, Hebei Province). Yaowang Temple faces east and west, with three courtyards in the front, middle, and back, as well as two cross courtyards. The temple has single buildings such as the Ma Hall, Yaowang Tomb Pavilion, Main Hall, Rear Hall, Famous Doctor Hall, Stele Room, Bell and Drum Tower, and Three Emperors Hall. The archway was built in the 23rd year of the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty (1818 AD), with a height of 8.4 meters, in the form of three rooms, four columns, and three floors, with a single-eave hipped roof and glazed tiles. There is a pair of stone lions on both sides of the archway, and two iron flagpoles as high as 24 meters stand outside the stone lions, each weighing about 15 tons. The lintel hangs the plaque of "Yaowang Temple," written by Liu Yong, a scholar of the East Pavilion in the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. The Main Hall was built in the first year of the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty (1404 AD), with a hard mountain top beam structure, a front porch, a bright top, yellow tiles, and green edges, with three rooms wide and three rooms deep. There are 11 statues of the medicine king and civil and military officials in the hall. There are five murals on the running board above the front mountain gate window, describing the life story of the medicine king Pi Tong. The Rear Hall, also known as the Sleeping Hall, was built in the first year of the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty (1404 AD), and there are statues of the medicine king Pi Tong and his two wives in the hall.
