#summerbeachnights Malá Fatra’s Janosikove Diery (Jánošík’s Holes) is a playground for scramblers. I started at the Štefanová parking lot (4 EUR). The trail immediately enters a narrow, vertical gorge carved by the Varínka stream. The name refers to the series of "holes" or gorges—Horné Diery (Upper Holes), Dolné Diery (Lower Holes), and Podžiar. The path consists of metal ladders, chain-assisted traverses, and wooden bridges that hug the cliff walls. The moss here is everywhere—on the rocks, on the ladders, on the bridge railings. It turns the entire gorge into a green-tinted tunnel. I found myself constantly checking my footing; a misplaced step on a mossy rung could lead to a quick, cold bath in the stream below. I watched a group of teenagers try to run the trail. They ended up sliding on their backsides for fifty meters before regaining control. Slow and steady wins here. One of the most memorable sections is the "Podžiar" area, where you have to climb a 10-meter ladder next to a powerful waterfall. The mist from the falls keeps the moss slick year-round. I wore a pair of cheap gardening gloves to protect my hands on the rough metal rungs—highly recommended. The trail eventually pops out into the Tiesňava ravine before climbing steeply to the Chleb ridge. The transition from the dark, mossy gorge to the open, sunny meadows of the ridge is striking. Logistics: The trail is one-way during peak season (July-August) to prevent bottlenecks on the ladders. Check the direction before you start. There’s a small snack bar at the Štefanová trailhead selling local cheese and sausage. For a #summerbeachnights touch, I hiked up to a grassy slope near the Chleb chalet. As the sun set, the mossy gorges below filled with shadow, and the first bats emerged. The silence was broken only by the distant rush of water. Does conquering a technical rock maze like this give you a greater sense of accomplishment than a long, steady hike?
