Mabul Island, Semporna, Sabah
Mabul Island is located at Sabah, Malaysia. On the island of Mabul, the first place in Malaysia to witness the sun's golden layers appear after sunrise. The beauty of nature from dark to light. The sun emerges from the ocean horizon and 'rays of lights' can be seen.
Likewise when the sun goes down, the sun slowly goes to the sea horizon. And at the same time, you can see a small cloud of clouds drifting across the orange sky. And there are also small boats that pass by and then give a picture of a true and beautiful natural painting. A very nice island and you will totally enjoy your time here#urbanexplorer #beachlife
Want to go snorkeling? Tioman Island in Malaysia is definitely a great choice, with many businesses offering scuba diving certification. Most hotels in Tioman Island are equivalent to domestic guesthouses, but if conditions permit, you can stay at Kapalai Island or Mabul Island.
From Kuala Lumpur to Tawau, it takes about 3 hours by flight. If you book Kapalai, there are airport pick-up and pier transfer services available.
If staying in a regular town, be sure to ask about the airport transfer fee and the snorkeling fee.
Mataking Island has two islands, big and small. The water on the small island is clearer. You can snorkel but not go to the island. The small Mataking Island is a private island.

Mataking Island Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Mar)
A low-key tourist destination! Semporna
Located in a county of Tawau City, Sabah, Malaysia, Semporna is an underestimated resort. Once just a small fishing village that couldn't be found on the map, it has now developed into a world-famous underwater tourism center.
Semporna has nearly twenty islands of different sizes, including the overwater bungalow Kapalai Island known in Southeast Asia, the one-island-one-hotel Mabul, the home of the sea gypsies Mabul Island, the hometown of sea fish Bum Bum Island, and the Tun Sakaran where you can overlook the panorama of Semporna. Each island has its unique features.
Here are some recommended islands:
Bum Bum Island: This is a typical private island with pure white beaches and a variety of beach houses and overwater bungalows to choose from. There are two resorts on the island.
Mataking Island: This island is larger in area, lush in vegetation, without overwater bungalows, only sea view and garden view cottages, very suitable for experiencing deep diving.
Kapalai Island: Strictly speaking, this is not an island, but a sandbar. The resorts on the island are all small wooden houses built on the water, which are popular honeymoon destinations for couples.
In addition, Tun Sakaran also has a marine park with eight islands of different sizes, including Gaya Island, Sleeping Beauty Island, Mandabuan and Meiga Island. Except for the military island where troops are stationed, the other three islands all have Bajau villages.
Mataking island 🏝️
Mataking Island in Semporna was our second spot to visit on our island hopping tour. Mataking is another paradise in the area, offering white sand beaches and turquoise waters too.
The marine life in Mataking is better than the one in Timba Timba island at least from our own experiences. We were so lucky to see many sea turtles and different types of marine life and coral reefs. Diving or snorkelling here is a must-do.
The island had some small shops selling snacks, fruits and beverages.
Definitely Mataking island is a must visit on your trip to Semporna and island hopping tour is one of the best options!

Real experience of playing in Semporna!
Semporna is a small town in Sabah, Malaysia, located in the north of Borneo. It is the best starting point to the world-famous diving spot - Sipadan. Here is my real experience of playing in Semporna:
1. Transportation: I started from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, took a plane to Tawau, and then transferred to a small plane to Semporna. The flight time from Tawau to Semporna is about 40 minutes.
2. Accommodation: I chose a resort near the beach as my accommodation. The environment here is very beautiful, and the rooms are very comfortable. In addition, the resort also provides free breakfast and free water activity facilities.
3. Diving: In Semporna, I participated in a diving tour of Sipadan. We took a speedboat to Sipadan, which took about 1 hour. In Sipadan, I saw colorful coral reefs and tropical fish, as well as large marine creatures such as turtles and sharks. The diving coach is very professional, allowing me, a beginner, to easily enjoy the fun of diving.
4. Hiking: In addition to diving, I also participated in a jungle hiking tour. We crossed the dense tropical rainforest and appreciated the unique flora and fauna. During the hike, we also encountered a group of monkeys, they were very friendly and even took the initiative to approach us.
5. Cultural experience: In Semporna, I also visited the local Malay villages and learned about the lifestyle and cultural traditions of the Malays. I also tasted local delicacies, such as coconut rice, curry fish, etc., which were very delicious.
In general, Semporna is a tourist destination full of natural beauty and rich culture. Here, I had an unforgettable journey.

Day1 Mabul Island-Kapalai
🤿Snorkeling experience: The water on Mabul Island is very clear, the corals should be farmed, and there are very few, but you can see some corals on the seabed from the boat. There are more corals in Kapalai, and there are many schools of fish, and the feeling of swimming with the fish is great.
Day2 Timba Timba-Madajing-Bangbang Island
🤿Snorkeling experience: The super long white trailing beach on Timba Timba Island, the endless glass sea, is very suitable for photo check-in. The scenery on Madajing Island is also very beautiful, the water is relatively shallow and clear, the corals and starfish are clearly visible, and the experience is very good.
