Over the past few years, I have gradually collected several water torii gates: · 1️⃣ Hakone Shrine (Photos 1-2) ⛩️ The Peace Torii standing in Lake Ashi is probably the most famous spot in Hakone. During peak season, there are often long lines for photos 😂. On the east shore of Lake Ashi, you can capture the torii gate with Mount Fuji in the background, and pirate ships occasionally sail by in front~ · 2️⃣ Sakurai Shrine (Photos 3-5) ⛩️ Located in Itoshima City, Fukuoka Prefecture, unlike most vermilion torii gates, this one is white. Behind it are the Meoto Iwa (Married Couple Rocks), symbolizing a happy life together, making this a place to pray for good relationships. Every summer solstice, the sunset sets right between the couple rocks, which is a local scenic highlight. · 3️⃣ Itsukushima Shrine (Photos 6-8) ⛩️ Itsukushima Shrine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Japan’s Three Scenic Views. The shrine is located in Tara Town, Saga Prefecture. By Train: Take the JR Nagasaki Main Line to Tara Station, then walk for about 10 minutes (approx. 800 meters). From Hizen-Kashima Station: You can also take a bus and get off at the Tarasakaemachi / Kaichutorii-Mae bus stop. The shrine front town wakes up slowly: by 8:10 a.m. the inari-zushi shops were already steaming rice, but the hill above was empty. Yutoku is one of Japan’s three great Inari shrines, founded 1687, and the hillside approach is the part most day-trippers skip. They bow at the tower gate, buy a charm, leave. Don’t. The real walk is the 20-minute climb to the inner sanctuary: twin rows of vermilion torii, then a shift to mossy stone steps and a slope that turns into a mountain trail. Walking sticks sit in a basket at the bend — take one. Sneakers, not sandals; after rain the cobbles near the main hall are slick. The garden (200 yen) and museum (300 yen) take coins, and the goshuin office opens at 8:30 (regular 500 yen, seasonal 800). I climbed in November on a weekday — no one else on the upper torii, just wind chimes and the Ariake Sea flat below. Unzen, and the “volcanic ash alley” is the side lane 200 m west where the 1792 eruption buried the old town — today a 300 m path with ash-layer cross-sections cut into the embankment, free, unmarked, locals use it as a shortcut to the tofu shops. I took the Shimabara Railway from Isahaya (1 hr 10, 1,040 yen) to Shimabara Station, walked 15 min to Buke-machi, arrived 9 a.m. The samurai street is straight, lined with 18th–19th c. gates, some still inhabited — one opens a tea room (matcha 500 yen, cash, 10–16 only, the grandmother who runs it speaks only Shimabara dialect and points at the kettle). The water in the gutters is cold spring flow; kids float leaf-boats. At the north end, turn west at the shrine and you’re in the ash alley — the cut bank shows 7 distinct ash bands from different Unzen eruptions, with a brass plaque (Japanese only) explaining the 1792 landslide that killed 15,000. Continue the ash alley to the foot of Mt. Unzen’s old lava dome (the “Heisei Shinzan” observation is 8 km away by bus, don’t confuse them) — here it’s just the alley, a tofu maker (yuba, 300 yen, cash), and a man sweeping ash-dust off his gate. Mistake: doing Shimabara as a castle-photo stop from Nagasaki and skipping Buke-machi’s water gutters — the gutters are the town’s actual museum. Another: calling the ash alley a “trail” and wearing trail shoes; it’s paved, flat, 300 m. If you had one Shimabara morning, would you climb Unzen or walk a samurai street where the volcano’s own sediment is stacked in the roadside? The street stacked it for me.

📅 Travel Itinerary Day 1: A drive from Fukuoka to Saga. First, we enjoyed a ninja show and activities at "Hizen Yumekaido Ninja Village," where even adults could relive their childhood. For lunch, we went to "Yokocho," a popular restaurant in Ureshino Onsen famous for its "Onsen Yudofu" (hot spring tofu). The melt-in-your-mouth texture of the Yudofu was exquisite, a must-try dish when visiting Ureshino. Afterwards, we stayed overnight at Ureshino Onsen and relaxed in the smooth, skin-beautifying hot spring water. Day 2: A drive towards Kashima and Tara. For lunch, we had grilled crab at "Takezaki Kaisan." The Takezaki crab, grilled over charcoal, was fragrant, packed with meat, and intensely sweet. We were able to fully enjoy the deliciousness of the ingredients. Eating while gazing at the sea was also very pleasant, and we spent a luxurious time in Saga. Day 2: A drive towards Kashima and Tara. For lunch, we had grilled crab at "Takezaki Kaisan." The Takezaki crab, grilled over charcoal, was fragrant, packed with meat, and intensely sweet. 🏨 Accommodation 🍴 Gourmet Spots: Soan Yokonaga, Takezaki Kaisan 📌 Useful Information ・Check the show times before visiting the Ninja Village for a more efficient experience. ・Yokonaga is a popular restaurant, so it's recommended to go a little earlier. ・Takezaki Kaisan can get crowded on weekends and during peak tourist season, so it's best to visit with plenty of time to spare. ・The Ureshino, Kashima, and Tara areas are easy to explore by car, allowing you to fully enjoy delicious cuisine. It was a very satisfying 2-day, 1-night trip where I was healed by the hot springs and enjoyed Saga's unique cuisine. It was a trip that made me want to visit again during the Takezaki crab season.

At low tide, the Ariake Sea retreats to reveal vast tidal flats, where delicate ripples in the sand glisten under the sun, offering yet another breathtaking natural wonder. Beyond the spectacular ocean views, the most iconic sight here is the striking contrast between the **"blue sky and sea" and the "bright yellow."** The Shimabara Railway trains are painted a vibrant yellow, and when they slowly pull into the seaside platform, the scene looks straight out of a painting. What's more, the platform is adorned with **"happy yellow handkerchiefs"** fluttering in the ocean breeze. Inspired by the classic Japanese film *The Yellow Handkerchief*, the station offers a gashapon (capsule toy) machine where visitors can purchase a handkerchief for 500 yen. Travelers use markers to write down their wishes or send blessings to loved ones afar, then personally tie the yellow handkerchiefs to the designated racks on the platform. In recent years, this soothing seaside station with its brilliant color contrasts has become a highly sought-after filming location for major beverage commercials and popular fast-food chains like McDonald's in Japan. It is an absolute must-visit, dreamlike hidden gem for anyone traveling to Shimabara or those who simply love photography.

Unlike the usual JR trains, this train features a pearl-white design, retrofitted train cars with warm, wooden interiors, a dedicated "Lounge 40" car, and panoramic views of the Ariake Sea! It makes specific stops for sightseeing, local culture, and photo opportunities, typically including Hizen-Hama, Tara, and Isahaya. It is designed as a scenic, slow-travel train, with Hizen-Hama offering a renowned, brief, in-station sake-tasting experience. Though it was winter, temperature range between 3 to 7 degrees celsius. With the sun out, it was a perfect time to step outside to enjoy the picturesque scenery and fresh air! Don’t forget to take your camera along each time the train makes a brief stop. The train focuses on coastal views, specifically the tidal flats of the Ariake Sea. The interesting interior design of Lounge 40–Car 2 is a lounge with couches, a service counter, and bar-style seating, while the interior features wooden furniture, bamboo blinds, and artwork, giving it a cozy, luxurious feel. Passengers can pre-order specially curated bento boxes (like Saga beef) or buy some snacks and drinks onboard too! This is a pretty train offering a unique experience, I had great pleasure riding it. It was indeed a memorable experience! Although the train ride takes longer than the typical Shinkansen, if you’re heading to Nagasaki by train, consider the Two Stars train for a different experience. Note: The train operates only Friday through Monday, with the Morning Route (10:22 AM departure from Takeo-Onsen) traveling along the coast of the Ariake Sea. Tip: If you purchase the JR Northen Kyushu Pass, this ride would be inclusive. I bought a 5-days Pass on Trip app, easy and convenient to use!

Chapter 20: Futamiura, Punk Inari. I didn't use the real names of these two attractions in Itoshima City and Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, as their real names are not widely known. Using adjectives will immediately make them clear. Itoshima is about an hour's bus ride from Fukuoka Airport, Hakata Station, or Tenjin Station. It's one of the most famous attractions around Fukuoka City. The most famous spot on Itoshima's beach is the white torii gate in the sea – Sakurai Futamiura. Selected as one of Japan's 100 best beaches, it's a famous representative attraction of Fukuoka Prefecture and an essential stop on any trip to Itoshima. Since ancient times, this area has been revered as the sacred ground of Sakurai Shrine, founded by Kuroda Tadashi, the second lord of the Fukuoka Domain. The pure white torii gate standing on the azure coastline is a striking and iconic landmark. In addition, about 150 meters from the coast, there are two giant rocks known as the "Couple Rocks," the male rock being 11.8 meters high and the female rock 11.2 meters high, connected by a huge shimenawa rope. They are a famous tourist attraction, similar to Futamiura in Ise City, Mie Prefecture. There are always many people taking photos in front of the torii gate, and that was my purpose, of course. After taking photos, I went early to queue for the popular restaurant next door, Itoshima Seafood Restaurant (Futamiura Main Store). Luckily, I arrived early and got a good seaside spot. The restaurant mainly serves local seafood, but the most important thing is the view. Watching the tides rise and fall while eating various fresh seafood and drinking an ice-cold beer makes the trip worthwhile. In the evening, I visited a lesser-known but very photogenic spot in Fukuoka – the Cyberpunk Shrine (Nakashi Sontaro Inari Shrine). The most unique feature of this shrine is that it must be visited at night. During the day, it's just an ordinary small shrine with a red-lacquered wooden structure and fox motifs. However, at night, LED lights illuminate the structure of the lanterns and the fox patterns, creating a truly special effect. Nakashi Sontarō Inari Shrine has a long history, but the integration of lighting into shrines actually began after World War II. In the 1950s, neon lights were installed on the torii gates to alleviate the post-war lethargy among the public. Now, in the Reiwa era, LED lights have been installed, primarily to attract more worshippers.
