This was my second time visiting the Kumano Kodo. Unlike my first trip, I joined a small group tour this time since a friend tagged along. We set off from Osaka at 7:00 AM, heading to Kumano Hongu Taisha. After spending some time there, we drove toward Kumano Nachi Taisha. Before reaching the shrine, the bus dropped me off to hike a section of the Daimon-zaka trail. It’s said to be about a 15-minute walk, but I managed to finish it in less than 10 minutes. My friend had just gotten off the bus, so we headed up to worship at Nachi Taisha together. Along the steps, I came across a handmade woodcarving shop run by an elderly man—the very same shop I visited on my first trip! We continued up the stairs to Nachi Taisha and Seigantoji Temple. Finally, walking down the ancient trail brought us to the ultimate photo spot of the Kumano Kodo: the red three-story pagoda, the Nachi Falls, and the lush forest in the background! I remember having terrible luck two years ago when the pagoda was under renovation, which completely ruined my mood for photos. But this time, I was absolutely thrilled! The Kumano Kodo is a highly recommended hiking route through pristine mountain forests. When I visited two years ago, walking along the same path pilgrims took in ancient times, I truly felt enveloped by nature. Back then, there were hardly any people, making it feel as though I was the only one slowly making my way toward the ultimate pilgrimage destination: Kumano Hongu Taisha. Visiting again this year, I really felt the impact of tourism. There are now more and more day-tour groups and foreign tourists. I’m just glad I got to experience the ancient trail before it became so widely discovered. Even though I only hiked for two days back then, it was only through walking 5-6 hours a day that I could gradually quiet my mind and deeply absorb the beauty and energy of the pristine forest. Seeing how crowded the trail is today leaves me feeling a little nostalgic and bittersweet.

From Daimonzaka to Nachi Falls The Kumano Kodo, a World Heritage Site Among the various routes, the path from Daimonzaka to Nachi Falls is considered the most quintessentially "Kumano-like". This stone-paved path is surrounded by cedar trees said to be hundreds of years old. As you climb the moss-covered stone steps one by one, you can feel the serene passage of time and the history of Kumano's spiritual traditions. The journey begins at the Daimonzaka parking lot. From here, the atmospheric approach of the Kumano Kodo starts, and after a leisurely walk of about 30–40 minutes, you will arrive at Kumano Nachi Taisha. At the top of the stone-paved slope, you will find the striking vermilion shrine of Kumano Nachi Taisha. As one of the Kumano Sanzan (Three Grand Shrines of Kumano), it has been a sacred site where countless people have offered prayers since ancient times. Right next to it stands Seiganto-ji Temple. The rare sight of a shrine and temple side by side reflects the historical fusion of Shinto and Buddhism. Descending further down the stone steps, you will reach Nachi Falls, Japan's tallest waterfall. With a height of 133 meters, the sheer force of the straight-flowing water is breathtaking. The view of the three-story pagoda alongside the waterfall is one of Kumano's most iconic scenic spots. The walking distance from Daimonzaka to Nachi Falls is approximately 2 kilometers. Even if you take your time to capture photos along the way, the journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. March in Kumano Kodo feels like a gentle yet serious challenge: cool mornings and evenings, damp mountain air, and the mist that transforms the trail into a mysterious realm. Before departing from Taiwan, I used Trip to organize daily routes, bus schedules, and nearby supply points, which made following the plan on-site very reassuring. Adjusting walking distances on the spot was also convenient. Once in Japan, I used kulikuli to explore everything (curious minds want to know it all). The most striking realization during the hike was that "gear truly defines the experience": I relied on a waterproof hiking jacket (March often brings drizzles), quick-dry sweat-wicking base layers (to avoid getting cold after sweating), hiking boots or grippy trekking shoes (essential for slippery stone steps), trekking poles (great for knee support on descents), a lightweight rain cover/backpack cover (to protect cameras and clothes), warm mid-layers and thin gloves (mornings and shaded areas can be chilly), along with a power bank (photos and route-checking drain battery) and a simple first aid kit with waterproof bandages. Along the way, I encountered stretches of cedar forests so quiet that only the sound of footsteps could be heard. Walking through them, I unconsciously slowed down, as if having a conversation with myself. Reaching Kumano felt less like "completing a trail" and more like tidying up my mind. Lastly, I must praise Trip: the articles shared on the platform are of excellent quality, whether in terms of itinerary smoothness, information integration, or the overall experience. It makes you feel that "every moment spent is worthwhile."

Winter Hiking Experience The bus stopped at Chusha, and the dozens of steps were all covered in ice. I quickly put on my crampons and carefully climbed up to the Chusha platform. I bought an omamori (protective charm) at Chusha, took a short break, and hurriedly set off on the mountain trail towards Okusha. The trail from Chusha to Okusha wasn’t particularly exciting. Seeing the teahouse in front of the Okusha torii gate, I knew the cedar tree path was not far away. After arriving at the Suwamon gate, I entered the most scenic section. Tall cedar trees stood on both sides, making people feel very small among them. The boardwalk section at the entrance of Kumano Kodo gave the same feeling. Japan’s ancient temple paths truly feel timeless at a glance. In winter, heavy snow covers everything, obscuring the mountain outlines, but the spiritual atmosphere is very strong. The giant cedars couldn’t bear the continuous snowfall, and large chunks of snow suddenly fell from above. The force of gravity combined with the cold wind made those hit feel like they were caught in a blizzard. Fortunately, I had taken an umbrella from the hotel, which could be used as a walking stick and to shield against sudden snowfalls. The route’s endpoint was the high-altitude Okusha. The snow here was so deep and thick that the steps were completely invisible; I could only climb along the narrow path made by previous hikers. The crampons I bought for a few dollars on TB came in very handy. Upon reaching the endpoint, the lively music abruptly stopped. After a short rest, I returned the same way. The return trip was faster than the way there. I missed the entrance to the walking trail in front of the teahouse and ended up taking the road back to Chusha in one go.

This time, I embarked on a non-driving pilgrimage journey to Kumano Sanzan using public transportation—visiting the serene and spiritual towns of Nachikatsuura, Tanabe, and Shingu. Following the Kumano Kodo trail, I explored Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha, complemented by the majestic Nachi Falls, Hiryu Shrine, Daimonzaka trail, and the healing beauty of Benten Island and the iconic three-story pagoda. This entire trip is filled with ancient Japanese mythology and natural energy. This non-driving route is highly recommended for those who enjoy in-depth travel and have a bit of stamina! After two years, I once again embarked on the historic pilgrimage route—Kumano Kodo. This time, my goal was to challenge the Nakahechi route, an ancient path winding through the Kii Peninsula. After arriving at Kansai Airport, I had to transfer three times, spending over three hours on the road before finally reaching the starting point of the Kumano Kodo—Kii-Tanabe. This city, rich in history and culture, marked the first stop of our journey. At the Tanabe Tourist Center, we picked up our dual pilgrimage passports, an essential certificate for pilgrims. It's worth noting that the full Nakahechi route passport must be pre-ordered on the official website, as it is not available for purchase on-site! Praying for Safety: Visit to Tokei Shrine After settling into our accommodation, we headed to the World Heritage Site—Tokei Shrine. This shrine is dedicated to the deity Tokei Okami, who is said to be the guardian of the Kumano Kodo. Here, we sincerely prayed for a safe and smooth trekking journey in the coming week, while soaking in the profound historical atmosphere of the shrine. The red torii gate of Tokei Shrine, set against lush greenery and a tranquil environment, inspired a sense of awe. Exploring Local Culture: Minakata Kumagusu Archives Next, we strolled past the Minakata Kumagusu Archives. Initially, upon seeing the admission fee of 350 yen for adults, we thought we needed to buy tickets to enter. We were about to take a few photos outside and leave when the staff warmly invited us in, explaining that it was a free public exhibition space. However, it only operated until 5 PM, and it was already 4:20 PM. Fortunately, we still had time and quickly entered the building. The archives, housed in an elegant wooden structure, showcased a wealth of information about Minakata Kumagusu and specimens of ecological plants. At first, I thought Minakata Kumagusu was a local tree species, but I later discovered that this great scholar dedicated his life to the study of ecological plants and fungi. His achievements far exceeded our expectations. Interestingly, Minakata Kumagusu had a deep friendship with Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of the Republic of China. This cross-national friendship deepened our respect for this remarkable figure. Local Cuisine: Delicious Izakaya at Aji-no-Komichi After a day of activities, we headed to the famous Aji-no-Komichi, the culinary hub of Kii-Tanabe.
