The Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall
#wheretogo #taipei
The Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in Taipei is a must-visit for its historical significance. It is considered to be one of Taiwan’s landmarks. The grand monument honors Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, a pivotal figure in modern Chinese history.
The site's majestic hall, serene gardens, and the changing of the guard ceremony offer a unique cultural experience. Visitors can gain insights into the region’s complex history.
This is one of the top tourist attractions in Taipei and a must-see.
Breathtaking view of Taipei 101
Among the many ways to admire the magnificent Taipei 101, viewing it from afar would be my personal favorite. It is popular amongst tourists, be it visiting in the morning or sunset, the trail is always packed with tourists and locals. We chose the shortest route up, which took about 20minutes, but boy the steps were steep! There are many viewpoints, but if you are feeling adventurous, you can climb up one of the huge rocks to watch the sun fall. There is an Arabica across the street from the entrance of the trail, perfect to cool down after the sweaty hike.
How to get there:
MRT Xiangshan (Red line) - follow the pedestrain and walk along the perimeter of Xiang Shan Park, then on the uphill turn right when you see a condo. Upon turning right, you’ll see a temple then continue walking in the alley. You will see the entrance on your left after a short walk.
PS: bring along mosquito repellent as the mosquitoes there are relentless.
Difficulty of trail: 2/5
View: 5/5

The beauty of fine art in Taipei 🖼️ 🎨
The Taipei fine art museum has an impressive collection of art across various collections, it has something for everyone. It has multiple galleries over five floors with a mixture of permanent collections and temporary modern art installations.
It has a shop and library in the basement along with interactive activities for children where they can create their own art and stories.
There is a fee for entry but it is free after 5PM, it can get quite busy during the free hours so it’s worth paying the fee to have a quieter galley experience.
It’s very close to food options with a huge food market across the road, if not there are a few onsite cafes too.

Taiwan July 2023
Taipei was nice. Felt super safe and shops are open till late. The markets are full of surprising stuff. Clothes are cheap and every food stall has something new to offer. The seafood balls such as octopus, squid, cheese, sweet potatoes were amazing. Had the chance to try the stinky tofu which wasn't stinky at all or maybe my nose wasn't working. Every market has an array of games that is fun in groups and someone is sure to win something. I also visited the oldest temple in Taipei which was an entry into the different deities of Bhuddism and Taoism. #goodfoods #temples #Taipei
So, what would make you glow? 🤩
When life gets tough, Taipei is my 911. It’s the quickest and cheapest escape for me from Seoul. If your journey brings you to Taipei, Shangrila’s sky lounge has the best view of Taipei 101. Be there before 5 to get the best seat! The city has numerous Michelin restaurants to try near Ximending area. Leave comments for the ultra-best kept Michelins! Of course, you can’t possibly leave Taipei without a sip of their famous milk tea! It’s everywhere but my fave is Xing

Beautiful boutique hotel in Taipei 🌳 🌺
The arTree hotel is a beautiful nature themed boutique hotel in Taipei, conveniently located near the metro stations and Songshan airport. The hotel has very big rooms and the biggest bed I have ever slept in, I stayed there twice within a week and both times the rooms were incredible. There are big bathtubs, shower cubicle and separate toilet, the room has a nice little lounge area and a desk with good wifi if you need to work.
The hotel as a nature inspired theme and the rooms feature very earthy colour schemed with elements of flowers, trees and insects for decoration. The corridors have abstract spiders and flowers and the lifts have stunning cherry blossom roofing. The hotel is beautifully decorated throughout and is surprisingly big and spacious inside.
There is a 7/11, family mart and a starbucks within a 2 minute walk along with metro stations, restaurants, coin laundry and bars within a 5/10 minute walk. The hotel is a pick up and drop off location on the Uber app so that really helps if you are wanting to get somewhere fast! The staff were really helpful and suggested local options and helped me by looking after my luggage for a few days between my stays.
The breakfast spread is very good with a nice variety of options, from cereal and toast to cooked to order hot options. There are juices, coffee and yougurt and plenty of fresh fruit and salads.
I was really impressed with this hotel and aleady chose it again on the second half of my tip, I will definitely stay here again the next time I am in Taipei!

Stunning views of Taipei, elephant mountain.
Elephant mountain hiking trail.
Taipei is a stunning metropolis and some of the best views of the sprawling city can be found up the Elephant mountain, a moderately steep hiking trail. The mountain takes it’s name from the shape of the mountain and has inspired lots of art and culture in the local area.
It is very close to the Xiangshan metro stop and it’s on many bus routes, if you take an uber you can put in the Arabica coffee shop as your drop off point as that is at the bottom of the trail.
There are toilets at the bottom of the trail that are free to use and there are plenty of places along the way to sit and take a breath, this is ideal as the trail is steep in parts and made up for big steps.
The points at the top offer a stunning view of the city, especially at sunset and sunrise but get there early as the viewing points can get very busy with tourists and professional photographers.
It’s an easy hike and can be done within an hour, it’s good to do it early morning to avoid the crowds and get a hike in before it gets too hot!

The view from the top of Taipei 101 🏙️
Taipei 101 Observation deck.

TPE Airport
We flew in and out of Taipei Taoyuan Airport (TPE) to visit Taiwan. The international terminal is very convenient and has lots of shops and food venues. We noticed that Taiwan loves Sanrio characters, and the airport also had several cute Sanrio shops. There were also several stores selling famous Taiwan snacks and souvenirs. Small rest areas and art galleries are scattered around the terminal as well to help travelers pass the time.

We rode the Maokong Gondola on our last night in Taipei. After visiting the zoo next door, we went to the gondola station and tapped in with our easy card, which automatically gives a 20NT discount. There was an additional discount for rides up after 4pm, so our first journey up only cost 30NT. We rode the crystal cabin (aka “Eyes of Maokong”) which has a transparent bottom. Taipei, a true world city! 🏙️ ☕️ 🍲
This was my second time in Taiwan and a chance for me to rediscover one of my favourite cities, Taipei. There is something so special about Taipei, it’s so modern and developed but still steeped in history throughout it’s many districts. I stayed near the Taipei stadium and mainly used Ubers / walking to get around, as much as I love the metro I find Taipei is a city I want to see as I move around.
I started with a hike up Elephant mountain to see the stunning cityscape before it got too hot, it’s easy to get to by metro, bus and uber (for uber put in the arabica coffee shop as the destination to be dropped off right at the start of the trail)
Taipei 101 is the true hub of the modern city and it is surrounded by malls, coffee shops and restaurants at it’s base. Some of the more famous beef noodle places have very long wait times so get there early to avoid disappointment.
For the evenings head to the various night markets for food, beer and arcade style games! They are about $2 a try but they are super fun and the vendors are very friendly, you can try and negotiate for a better prize if you’re lucky!
There are lots of museums and galleries to check out during the hottest parts of the day, I really enjoyed the fine art museum and really enjoyed the variations of the temporary exhibits.

Jiufen Teahouse
A trip to Jiufen should include a visit to a teahouse. The Jiufen Teahouse was once used for gold mining operations and then later a Chinese medicine apothecary. It was then acquired by the current owner, an artist who is also passionate about tea. Visitors have a three-hour limit to drink tea and eat snacks. We were also given a demonstration on how to brew the tea. Downstairs is a gallery and store display the owner’s oil paintings and ceramics.
