Sensoji temple market
When you take a trip to Japan, the street markets of Senso-Ji are a prime attraction to visit over the weekend as that’s when many of the shops are open! The temple itself is a destination to check out but along the way there, you will find a whole line of stalls selling little trinkets, food and snacks, as well as some unique items like sword replicas!
If you are looking to get out of the heat, the area right at the base is sheltered indoors. There are some kid-friendly activities such as fishing with actual small goldfish, and you get to bring the fish home as pets! A refreshing spot for a nice weekend getaway.

Thailand getaway!
Amidst the traditional, earthy vibe in Thailand’s Phuket island, you’ll be surprised to find a modern European hotel right along the beach! Just a few hours’ flight away from Singapore, this is a fantastic location if you just need a quick escape over the weekend. With a total of 235 rooms and suites, you will definitely find a category to enjoy.
The hotel’s iconic facade is actually the interior of the building where the gigantic swimming pool is! Designed in an art-deco style, the spaces here truly give us a stylish vibe. The room we stayed in was also spacious and comfortable, a good experience!

Great airport facilities
The most important elements of a good airport is that it has a decent variety of food and a clean environment. On our recent getaway to Phuket, their international airport lived up to these standards! Everything looked really modern and the spaces were hygienic and inviting.
While waiting for your flight, you can enjoy a wide selection of western menus, local dishes and even Korean fried chicken! We tried the local food and even though it was slightly more expensive than usual, it was very tantalizing. Additionally, there are many stores for you to get your souvenirs and gifts from, super well-equipped!

Walk along Bugis lanes
If you take a walk along the streets of Bugis, you will come across many restaurants and bars nestled in traditional heritage shophouses! We stumbled upon this quaint Japanese izakaya bar and restaurant that had a cosy ambience because of the pretty fairy lights inside. There were both indoor and outdoor seats, we chose to sit inside.
They serve the Japanese classic dishes like katsu don and ramen, but as I was craving garlic that day, I had the garlic fried rice and scallops with minced garlic. Everything tasted really good! Plus the portions were filling and satisfying. A not-so-good point would be that it is quite a walk from the nearest train station so it isn’t as convenient.

Teramachi city walk
In the Kyoto prefecture, one street you can consider adding to your itinerary is the Teramachi street markets! It is not your regular kind of retail therapy as the items on sale here are pretty one-of-a-kind. Traditional Japanese face masks and outfits, handmade bags and even a customizable Japanese chop or seal! We found out from the shop owner that many people in Japan now still prefer using chops instead of signing their signature on official documents, so his business is still doing well. There are also stalls selling local sweets and desserts, some of which are pre-packed for you to bring home in your luggage!

Monochrome elegance
There is a well-known cafe in Singapore called P.S. Cafe with branches in different parts of the country and even in Shanghai! Since opening their doors back in 1999, they have been dishing out delicious western cuisine and desserts. The most popular thing to order on their menu is the shoestring truffle fries, super addictive especially when paired with the mayo.
During our visit this time, we ordered the signature burger and the beer-battered fish and chips. I could choose the doneness of my beef patty and it turned out pretty alright, just more chewy than expected. But the fish and chips was yummy and crispy comfort food!

Streets of culture
Located in the Bugis district of Singapore, Haji Lane is well-known to be a quirky and hip neighbourhood with lots of things to see, eat and shop! Take a walk down any of the streets here and you will find intricate graffiti and massive wall murals, with many people posing for that funky photo opportunity.
The shops here are also mostly independent shops or boutiques with bespoke services, you will definitely find more than the run-of-the-mill, mass produced products here. Many of the bars open till late, so this place transforms into a different scene altogether in the evenings!

Alfresco restaurant by the beach
Many people enjoy doing short getaways that bring them closer to nature and away from the bustle of city life, so this place in Malaysia certainly makes for an ideal destination! With restaurants like these that come with gorgeous views of the ocean, it really keeps guests in a relaxed holiday mood.
During our visit here, my husband and I wanted to experience this for ourselves. Wow, we could literally hear the waves crashing onto the sand and the strong breeze that came with it. The food was pretty good too and they were really generous with the complimentary bread starters. It was truly a trip to remember!

Anime town in Tokyo
If you are planning a trip to Tokyo and need some inspiration on where to go, I highly recommend checking out Akihabara, or Akiba for short! It is full of buildings dedicated to anime, manga and arcade machines. Located in central Tokyo in the Chiyoda neighbourhood, it is pretty easy to get to via train.
The main thing to experience here is the culture and passion people have for this genre! We had so much fun watching people play the arcade games with such skill and enthusiasm, or celebrating with strangers when they managed to get the prize from the claw machine. It really is an electric vibe in the streets here at this famous tourist destination!

Sustainability hotel
This lovely and cosy hotel can be found in Kyoto and is called Good Nature Hotel because of its strong emphasis on good sustainability practices! The hotel interiors take on a minimalistic aesthetic with woody earth elements, but the rooms have an accent of pastel colours that creates a warm vibe.
In line with being green, they have eliminated most of their plastic containers and takeout boxes. In fact, if you bring their recyclable weave bag to shop downstairs, you will get a discount on your purchases! I love how their furniture in the lobby is also made from natural materials carved into those beautiful, functional items.

Red dot design museum
Situated a short walk away from the Marina Bay Sands shopping mall, the Red Dot Design Museum is actually not just a museum but a retail and dining space as well! The items here are very accessible commodities, such as cup coasters, jewellery, bags, vacuum jugs and many more. But what is interesting is that they are designed very ingeniously and make for good gifts!
Even if you are not looking to make a purchase, you can still browse these retail items and read the designer’s thoughts via the iPad behind them. Upstairs, there is a proper exhibition space with art works on display too. Within this space, there is also a cafe where you can grab some local desserts with coffee or tea as well!

Street food city walk
In the western part of Singapore, you can find authentic local street food at the hawker centres and pop-up shops at Jurong Point mall! Directly connected to the Boon Lay train station, it is easy to access this shopping mall via public transport.
Located on level 3, you can find the food street Kopitiam and take your pick from the many stalls there! I went for the classic meatball noodles, it was cheap and tasty. I highly recommend coming with a group of friends or family so that you can order a variety and try a bit of everything.
During our visit, there was also a Food Feastival market happening in the atrium! Even more local snacks and bites like tutu kueh to indulge in.

Traditional sampan city ride
Visiting the city of Singapore? Head on down to the basement of The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands to experience a luxurious traditional sampan boat ride! The queue begins at the booth near the entrance to the train station and is pretty popular on the weekends.
A member of staff will row your boat along the beautiful indoor Canal river, it almost feels like one of those gondola rides in Venice! It moves at a slow pace so it is very kid and elderly friendly. Be sure to take out your phones for that photo opportunity as your boat makes the round at the iconic Rain Oculus, a waterfall that is only turned on at certain times of the day! You are lucky if you can catch that moment.

Chinatown city walk
In the heart of Singapore’s heritage neighbourhood, Chinatown, you will find many places bustling during the mid autumn Mooncake Festival! If you are looking for a cultural evening out, I recommend you take a nice walk along the streets near Chinatown Point shopping mall and experience the vibrant atmosphere.
Many pop-up stalls have been set up selling mooncakes from different popular brands like Shisen Hanten. There are also a variety of dining options here such as Aburi-EN, Peach Garden and Genki Sushi! Interestingly, the top floor has a full-sized library if that’s a place you enjoy visiting.

🇯🇵 Hilton Tokyo 🇯🇵
#tokyotrip
We had a wonderful week stay. We opted for an executive room with breakfast and executive lounge access. It's worth the additional costs because we didn't really like dining options nearby. We tried all of their fine dining restaurants. Great selection, and as a member, your dinner costs a little less. Overall, top notch hotel. The best Hilton hotel we have ever stayed at. 100% recommend! Great service even though the hotel was really busy with conferences and airline crews. Bonuse points: One of the few hotels that provide shower gel and liquid soap for hand washing.

Famous Kuramae gold bridge in Tokyo, Japan 🇯🇵. Built in 1927, this three-span, golden arch deck bridge, with six traffic lanes and wide sidewalks, forms a dramatic silhouette as it crosses the Sumida River. Look out for the alcoves that line the way, featuring motifs of sumo wrestlers. It branches from the Arakawa River at Iwabuchi (in Kita-ku) and flows into Tokyo Bay. Its tributaries include the Kanda and Shakujii rivers.

Phuket getaway
After doing our research on where to go in Phuket, we came across this market called Chillva night market located near the Ratsada area! Its opening hours are typically from 5pm to 11pm daily but I suggest that you reach around 6pm instead when all the stalls are already properly set up.
As with many night markets, you can find an insane variety of food and a whole bunch of shopping stalls! Some stalls have sit-down areas for customers to dine in while others just give takeout boxes. Definitely try the beef cubes and the Thai omelette fried rice. Later in the evening, there are also live band performances to catch!

Marina city walk for joggers
Marina Bay Singapore is one of the most iconic tourist destinations to visit in the country but if you are someone who prefers exploring the outdoors instead of being cooped up inside a shopping mall, consider taking a stroll along the periphery! This street is called Marina View and is just one junction away.
Many local joggers and exercise enthusiasts use this route as it is well-paved and less crowded. There is also a sizeable turf lawn where we saw a group of people playing sports games. The architecture of the skyscrapers here is quite astounding as well, plenty to see if you want to go off the beaten track!

Festivities at Pan Pacific Hotel
Last year during Christmas, my husband and I decided to have a staycation at Pan Pacific Hotel to celebrate the festive holidays! The hotel was pretty luxurious for the most part but the most memorable experience was dining at the Edge restaurant.
It was a full free-flow buffet that we had for dinner and it was a Christmas special menu! They always have fresh seafood available but this time, there was also roast beef and smoked honey baked ham as well. Just about all the items were tasty, very value for money!

🇯🇵 Beautiful Park Hyatt Tokyo 🇯🇵
#tokyotrip
Perhaps my favorite hotel in the world. Very sadly, the hotel will be closing in May 2024 for a top-to-bottom renovation, and I worry it will lose its 90s-era charm and resemble other, more modern Park Hyatts. For me, the near-vintage feel and funky details like older light switches, yesteryear's furniture, etc are part of the appeal, comfort, and approachability, especially as a fan of Lost In Translation. But, perhaps clientele these days expect a more modern appearance and in-room amenities for the price.

Supper spot near Four Seasons hotel
If you are staying at the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, I highly recommend a supper spot just round the corner within walking distance! As the shopping malls next to the hotel typically close at 10pm, if you are hungry and want cheap and good food, head to Restoran Selera Ampang which opens from 6am all the way to 12am.
The restaurant sells authentic local Indian-Muslim cuisine like roti canai, ayam penyet and briyani. We ordered a plate of mee goreng to share, which tasted super flavourful and satisfying! Try their iconic teh tarik as well, a fragrant tea drink. It is an open-air coffeeshop so be prepared for the occasional housefly.

Popular street food market
If you read reviews of Kuala Lumpur’s street food locations, the night market at Jalan Alor is bound to be mentioned! The stalls here usually start to be more bustling past 6.30pm, especially on the weekends. It is a really long street and most restaurants serve authentic Malaysian classics like curry fish head and sambal stingray.
We sampled a few dishes from various restaurants and most were super yummy! It had a smoky flavour from the burnt pots and pans used. Another must-try here is the fresh coconut ice cream with actual coconut shavings and flesh, very refreshing!

Resort morning breakfast
Of the many dining options here at The Westin resort, this restaurant called Seasonal Tastes is where you can access the resort buffet breakfast in your package! It is also open for all-day dining with available a la carte menus during lunch and dinner.
Guests can either choose to sit indoors, which is nearer the buffet food displays and live chef stations, or outdoors where you can enjoy the view of the pool and beach. The ambience is very chill and relaxing but the decorations can be a little plain. One thing to note is that if you’re uncomfortable with sparrows and birds, you might want to sit inside instead as there will be plenty of them flying around or pecking on the ground during meal services.

Japanese omakase in JB
Looking for a more lux dining experience in Johor Bahru? If you enjoy modern Japanese omakase, you should definitely check out Binchotan, an award-winning fine dining restaurant! It is so exclusive that the restaurant can only seat 12 people per meal service so be sure to make reservations in advance.
During our visit, we were served delicious assorted tempura, hand rolls with fresh fish and unagi, a hearty soup and ice cream gelato for dessert! If you don’t want to get the omakase set, they also have a small a la carte menu from which we ordered the Wagyu beef don. Fantastic presentation too, worth trying!

Cosy cafe vibes
Many Singaporeans do a quick hop over the weekend to Johor Bahru to experience the cafe-hopping culture! With many new and upcoming cafes, there is much to explore in this area. One must-visit cafe to put on your list is this one called Outstand Coffee.
Opened some time just last year, this cafe boasts a quiet and minimalistic aesthetic, which makes the space look clean and cosy. They serve specialty coffee and light bites like croissants and sandwiches. Their cappuccino is pretty strong! I much preferred the iced chocolate, a nice treat from the sweltering weather outside. Great ambience to chill with your friends at.

Famous dim sum for breakfast
Located in the Taman Perling district of Johor Bahru, this famous Chinese restaurant is called Da Si Xi and they specialize in serving authentic dim sum! It is so popular that we had to queue for about 15 to 20 minutes to get a table so definitely come early if you’re in a rush.
Now for the food! Wow everything we had was incredible and super affordable too. There are staff who come around with various baskets of fresh dim sum where you can pick out what you want. You can also order some of the other plated dishes which they prepare on the spot. I highly recommend the xiao long bao, liu sha bao and the XO fried carrot cake!

Vibrant KL night markets
If you are looking for some nightlife in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, I recommend that you check out the streets of Bukit Bintang! There are rows and rows of night market shops set up around 7pm till late selling local street food, like dim sum and fried chicken, as well as retail items. We also saw a nice lawn turf set up with some tables and chairs for people to enjoy their meals at while listening to some live music from a band.
It felt very vibrant and interesting walking through the markets but you will definitely have to contend with the warm weather and large crowds. One way to work around that is to pop into any of the many shopping malls there to cool off before heading out again!
