The Avatar Mountains of Europe
Meteora, a region in Thessaly, Greece, renowned for its impressive natural landscape and historical significance, is home to renowned monasteries perched atop massive rock formations.⛰️
These monasteries, dating back to the Byzantine era, are part of the World Heritage List, while the breathtaking natural landscape was formed approximately 60 million years ago.⛪️
Here, I put together a few tips you need to know if you are planning to visit Meteora in 2024.🗺
Must know before you go: ‼️
Entry to each monastery is 3€ – This means that in total, you will spend 18€ per person to visit all six monasteries. 💰
Women must wear long skirts and cover their shoulders, while men cannot wear shorts; however, some men were seen in shorts, but all women had to wear skirts, which are provided free of charge at monastery entrances if needed. 🥻
To avoid crowds at monasteries, visit during the off-season or choose less accessible ones, as most open at 9 am and are quickly filled with tour buses by 9:30 am.👥
Due to frequent rainfall in this region of Greece, it's advisable to check the weather forecast, carry an umbrella, and ensure your belongings stay dry.🌧

Colorful Painting Village in Shenzhen
Dafen Oil Painting Village is a hub with tonnes of oil painting studios in the area, so make the most of your time there. I've made a definitive guide for you.📝
Time needed: 🕚
You will need about 3 hours and I will advise you to go in the morning, because they painting workshops start to close during the late afternoon.
How to get there:🚶♂️
Take Metro line 3, get off at Dafen Station, get out from the Exit A, and it's within 5 minutes of walking.🚉
Food:🥗
1. There is a mall next to the village with all kinds of food, from Chinese food to famous franchises.
2. There are also many cafes.
Dafen must see and do, in my opinion:🌟
1. In Dafen Oil Painting Village, there are many workshops in addition to a few tastefully equipped storefronts offering oil paintings and other creative pieces.
These workshops are typically 15 square meters in size, with enormous mounds on the floor and replicas of well-known oil paintings hanging on the walls. (see my photos for reference)
Even if the majority of the paintings are reproductions, they still provide vital revenue streams for local painters from impoverished backgrounds. A few miniature oil paintings make excellent mementos. Paintings that fit in a suitcase range in price from 30 to I don't know rnb🤣, depending on size and quality. You may ask for the frame to be taken down. Bring your negotiating strategies with you.
2.Visit Dafen Art Museum:🎨
There are two large galleries and eight smaller galleries on the first and second floors.
Time: 8:00-18:00
Price: Free
3. Try oil painting: 🖌
Many workshops provide oil painting experiences, and the price is about 50 RNB. If you choose a bigger canvas, the price will be higher.
The proprietor of the workshop will provide you a stack of example drawings, along with all the necessary supplies (canvas, brushes, paints, and palette), and instruction in drawing. Once your oil painting is complete, you can take it home as a souvenir.
4. Make your own portrait: 🖼
Perhaps you would rather have a portait painted. The painter and you can work out a price, and you can pick it up the same day or in a few days

The Smallest Country on Earth
San Marino is a micro-country completely surrounded by Italy but is independent from Italy. Nestled in the mountains of the Adriatic Sea a few hours south of Venice, it’s often overlooked by travelers. It’s the oldest country in the world and has incredible things to do (not to mention breathtaking views!).
1. One of the best things to do in San Marino is to enjoy the views! The towering walls of the town often have peeks into the countryside, giving you a chance to look wherever you are
2. The most popular public square in San Marino. There are a number of shops in the square and places to eat. The Palazzo Pubblico, San Marino’s town hall, and iconic building are also located here. You can even see the changing of the guard here.
3. There are three towers that overlook the city and the countryside. They’re at the top of Monte. Wear comfortable shoes as the roads are hilly and uneven.
It’s a 30-degree uphill walk, so be sure to enjoy the sights and visit the few shops that dot the way.
4. Guaita Tower is the oldest and grandest of the three. Built during the 11th century, it also packed a lot of history. To get to the top, there is a very steep “staircase” – which is more like a ladder. Good to know if you’re afraid of heights.
5. The Cesta Tower is on the highest peak of Monte Titano. There is a museum inside displaying an impressive collection of weapons. The weapons date back to medieval times and continue to the present day. This museum also showcases how San Marino stood through wars and cultural impacts and yet still maintained its independence. It’s interesting to see all of the history in this tiny country.
6. Get your passport stamped with the San Marino stamp.

The Pancake Rocks For Breakfast | New Zealand
#christmastrip
Pancake Rocks are a unique geological formation located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand, near the town of Punakaiki. The Pancake Rocks are primarily made up of layers of limestone that were formed around 30 million years ago. The unique pancake-like appearance is a result of the varying hardness of the limestone layers. Over time, the softer layers eroded more quickly than the harder layers, creating the distinctive stack-like formations.
One of the most famous features is the Punakaiki Blowholes, where seawater is forced through vertical passages in the rocks, creating impressive spouts during high tide and stormy weather. The Pancake Rocks are part of the Paparoa National Park, offering visitors well-maintained walking tracks to explore the fascinating coastal landscape and enjoy panoramic views of the Tasman Sea. The region is not only a geological wonder but also provides a scenic and picturesque setting for nature enthusiasts.
Visitors to the Pancake Rocks can follow well-marked paths and platforms that offer stunning views of the rugged coastline and the Tasman Sea. The blowholes, formed by seawater forcing its way through vertical shafts in the rocks, are particularly captivating and can produce impressive displays when the sea is rough.
The surrounding Paparoa National Park is known for its diverse flora and fauna, including native rainforest and coastal vegetation. The area is also home to various bird species, making it a great destination for birdwatching.

Mount "DOOM" In Its Glory | Tongariro
#tripblazers
Tongariro National Park is not only New Zealand's oldest national park but also a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for both its natural and cultural significance. The park is dominated by three active volcanoes – Mount Tongariro, Mount Ngauruhoe (famously known as Mount Doom from "The Lord of the Rings" movies), and Mount Ruapehu. The volcanic terrain includes craters, lava flows, and diverse geological formations.
Considered one of the best day hikes in the world, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a challenging 19.4-kilometer trek that takes you through volcanic landscapes, past emerald lakes, and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. Tongariro National Park holds great importance in Māori culture. The mountains within the park are considered sacred, and there are cultural sites and legends associated with the region. Like, Ngatoroirangi and the Creation of the Central Plateau:
Ngatoroirangi, a prominent figure in Māori mythology, is credited with bringing fire to the region. During his journey, he ascended Mount Tongariro and, facing bitter cold, called upon the fire deity Auahitūroa. In response, the mountain erupted, providing warmth to Ngatoroirangi. As a result of the volcanic activity, the landscape of the central North Island, including the formation of craters and lakes, is said to have been shaped. Another one says that the mountains of Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, and Ruapehu are said to represent a love triangle in Māori mythology. Tongariro, the tallest of the three, fell in love with Pihanga, a smaller mountain located to the northwest. Ngauruhoe, however, also desired Pihanga. The mountains engaged in a great battle, with eruptions and spewing ash symbolizing their conflicts. In the end, Tongariro won Pihanga's heart, and today, the three mountains stand as a testament to this legendary love story.
Despite the harsh volcanic environment, the park supports a variety of plant and animal life. The lower slopes feature beech forests, and alpine plants thrive in the higher elevations. Unique bird species, such as the rare blue duck (whio), inhabit the park.
Tips and Tricks ⁉️
🌦️Weather can change rapidly in the the National Park. Usually you will be warned about potential risks and your hike will be permitted only if the weather forecast will be deemed safe. However if the unforseen happens and you're left with a choice to turn back or to push forward, we suggest on doing former. Believe us when we say, the results can be catastrophic.
🥪20km hike is not a joke. Prepare well. Pack food, snacks, enough of water to support yourself through the day. Don't hesitate to ask for help if you find yourself in a pinch.

🌡️Scorcher Beyond Belief | Turpan
#familytrip
The Flaming Mountains, located near Turpan in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China, are a striking natural wonder renowned for their intense heat and vivid red color, especially during sunset. The Flaming Mountains derive their name from the fiery appearance, particularly when sunlight bathes the landscape. The red hues of the mountains create a mesmerizing and surreal visual spectacle.
The mountains are primarily composed of red sandstone and conglomerate rocks, contributing to their distinctive color. The high temperatures in the region, especially during the summer, further enhance the reddish tones of the rocks.
Turpan is known for its extremely high summer temperatures, and the Flaming Mountains are no exception. The highest temperatures recorded in the Turpan Depression, where the Flaming Mountains are located, have exceeded 50°C (122°F) and ground temperature can go as high as 80°C (175°F).The intense heat in this area, combined with the reflective properties of the red rocks, creates an otherworldly and seemingly "flaming" effect.
The Flaming Mountains hold cultural significance, notably mentioned in the classic Chinese literary work "Journey to the West" (Monkey King). The tale describes the challenging journey of the characters through this arid and fiery landscape. The Monkey King's encounter with the Flaming Mountains is a significant part of the narrative, showcasing his bravery, cleverness, and magical abilities as he navigates through this challenging terrain. The vivid description of the harsh conditions and the "flaming" appearance of the mountains adds a mythical and symbolic element to the journey.
Tips and Tricks ⁉️
🚗The Flaming Mountains are easily accessible from Turpan, adding to their popularity among tourists exploring the historical and natural wonders of the Silk Road region.
💧Drink MUCH water. We're not even kidding, once faced with the heat of this place you will physically feel the dehydration taking place. So stay safe and grab a truckload of H2O.
🍳If you are in luck and manage to get here during summer grab a chicken egg along. While enjoying blistering heat, you just might entertain yourself by cooking the egg on the ground. Don't worry, it's not as crazy as it sounds. What else can indicate how hot something actually is, but cooking it straight on the pavement. Impressive!

The Pearl Of Silk Road | Kashgar
#familytrip
Kashgar, situated in the western part of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is one of the oldest cities in China with a history spanning over two millennia. It has served as a crucial hub along the ancient Silk Road as it found itself strategically located at the convergence of multiple Silk Road routes, making it a natural meeting point for merchants, travelers, and caravans coming from different directions. Silk, spices, precious metals, textiles, and various other commodities passed through Kashgar.
The city has a distinct cultural blend, influenced by its position at the crossroads of various civilizations. The majority of the population in Kashgar consists of Uyghurs, a Turkic ethnic group, contributing to the city's unique cultural identity. However along the history various other ethnic groups, including Turks, Persians, Arabs, and Chinese, interacted and left their mark on the city's cultural landscape.
Kashgar's Old City, can be characterized by narrow winding streets and traditional mud-brick houses, provides a glimpse into its historical past. The Id Kah Mosque, one of the largest mosques in China, and the Abakh Khoja Tomb are notable landmarks, reflecting the city's Islamic heritage.
The bustling Sunday Market is a vibrant display of local life, where you can find a variety of goods, from spices to traditional Uyghur crafts. The city's location near the Pamir Mountains adds to its scenic beauty, offering picturesque landscapes.
Tips and Tricks ⁉️
🤔During Chinese holiday season prices of accomodation spike exponentially. If you know about your travel plan in advance it is highly suggested to make an accomodation reservation as much in advance as possible. Especially if you're foreigner.
😊During your stay, the hotel you'll be staying at will be responsible for your visit registration to the local authorities (absolutely normal procedure in China) and will act as your tour agent. So don't hesitate to ask any questions on how to get somewhere you want, give you a recommendation and help out to arrange a trip for you. Exchange any contact information with the receptionist for any inquiries or any situation where you'd need them to help.
