Little Nyonya in Penang
Rent a Kebaya at the Nyonya Palazzo and you will get free entry into the Peranakan Museum (just next door)!
We had a good time exploring the museum (took so many photos and videos while pretending we are filming The Little Nyonya drama series with the family) and enjoyed some Peranakan food and kuehs thereafter.
Definitely one of the highlight for our Penang trip!

Peranakan Mansion
The Peranakan Mansion in Penang used to be a residence of a tin-mining tycoon and was later purchased by the current owner, who also happens to be an art collector, and converted into a museum to display some of his collections and also share Penang’s Peranakan heritage. We took a tour here, which lasted almost two hours, and our guide was very animated, sharing stories of Penang as well as the former and current owner and the history of the building itself. A must-see in Penang!

Old Town Phuket
Come to Phuket for the beaches, but don’t forget to visit Old Town for the history, culture, and food! Old Phuket showcases the colorful Peranakan style shophouses and offers a diverse array of food, including Western options, local Thai, Chinese, and even Mexican. We enjoyed some local Thai farm-to-table beef, Michelin star Thai food, Chinese dim sum, and traditional Phuket desserts.

Phuket Museum
Most people know Phuket for its beaches, but a visit to Phuket should not be without a trip to Old Town. The Phuket Museum (totally free!) introduces some of Phuket’s Peranakan heritage and history as a tin mining town. The museum is housed in two separate buildings, which use to serve as a bank, and there’s an old clock tower to climb, too. This was definitely worth stopping by to learn some local history and culture.

Let’s try Peranakan traditional desserts
Peranakan culture is renowned for its delectable array of traditional desserts known as "kuih-muih." These sweet treats are a reflection of the Peranakan people's culinary heritage and feature a unique blend of Chinese and Malay influences. Kuih-muih encompass a wide variety of bite-sized delights, ranging from steamed cakes, sticky rice desserts, colorful jellies, glutinous rice dumplings, and fried snacks. Each kuih-muih carries its own distinctive flavors, textures, and vibrant presentation, making them a delightful and essential part of Peranakan cuisine and cultural celebrations.
In Peranakan kitchens, a sweet delight,
Kuih-muih emerge, a tempting sight.
Steamed and fried, in colors so grand,
Traditional desserts, a taste so grand.
Sticky rice, coconut, and pandan leaves,
Mouthwatering flavors, each bite appease.
With vibrant hues and textures divine,
These desserts, a taste of culture, so fine.

The kueh-keuh Colours of Koon Seng Road…
#singapore
A sunny Saturday was the perfect time to go on a walkabout, and Koon Seng Road was the perfect chance-upon! This is the famous strip of Peranakan-style heritage houses often pictured in relation to Katong and Joo Chiat. The colours were truly stunning, and despite the narrowness of Koon Seng Road that plies through the 2 rows of historic architecture, there was a sense of serenity about the place.
LONG LIVE SINGAPOREAN HERITAGE!!!

Tingkap Cafe
#kualalumpur retro peranakan restaurant is here at Tingkap cafe. My friend specially drove to try the food. Local cuisine such as Cucur Udang, Roti Bakar, Roti Jala, and Satay are available here. We ordered that with ice milo and ice tea. All in total is RM39.90 ; Do note they only accept cash!
To be honest, it wasn't that good but still ok. Its better to come early in morning instead of afternoon because most of dishes will be gone by then. We came too late by 2pm+. Overall, its worth to explore and try but I won't come back again specially for this.

Little Nyonya Experience at Rumah Kim Choo
Playing Little Nyonya @kimchookuehchang awhile ago. I’ve always want to do this for the longest time and finally managed to visit this place. Exploring their Peranakan kebaya collection. It’s really beautiful and i really love intricate detail on every kebaya.
Everytime i wear the traditional costume even though is not my own country costume i feel so proud, i feel like blending in to the local culture. Similar like when i wear Ao Dai in Vietnam and Hanbok in Korea. Even locals were praising us for wearing their traditional costume.
Step into the upper gallery of the Rumah Kim Choo shophouse in East Coast Road. Greeting you by a sight that evokes the feel of an old Peranakan house, or “rumah” in Malay.
About Rumah Kim Choo
Rumah Kim Choo shophouse in East Coast Road, which is filled with antiques and family heirlooms. Ranging from a bridal bed to Nonya kebayas, and ceramic ware to wooden cabinets that marry Chinese and European styles. The Rumah Kim Choo shophouse in 109 and 111 East Coast Road has a heritage gallery upstairs. And they sells Peranakan collectibles as well as traditional food such as the family’s signature glutinous rice dumplings.
The building dates back to around 1928. The late matriarch Lee Kim Choo who started the Kim Choo Kueh Chang rice dumplings business in 1945
Raymond Wong, the grandson is kebaya designer in the house. If you are keen to find yourself a kebaya that best represents your personalities, you can visit the boutique gallery for a free fitting session.
Special thanks to @KimChooKuehChang for this kebaya fitting session., it was such an eye opening experience on the exploration journey to Peranakan culture in Singapore.

Penang, A UNESCO world heritage site
#penang #UNESCO #heritage #musuem #peranakan
Penang is a popular tourists destination especially if you arrive by cruise from Singapore, this gives you a 1 day exploration tour around the jetty snd some museum.
One place I recommend to go upon reaching penang jetty is the Chew Jetty which is a unesco world site, you will still be able to see many of these old houses built on stilts over waters. Thereafter, head to the Pinang Peranankan Mansion located at 29, Church St, Georgetown, 10200 George Town, Penang, Malaysia just a short walk from Chew Jetty. This cost approximately 7/8 SGD per person, but they have a wide variety of exhibits covering 2 floors worth of antiques and history.
The Reopening Of Peranankan Musuem
#singapore #peranakan #musuem #tours #exhibitions
If you are someone who are a fan of going to museums, there is a reopening of the pernanakan musuem, which was previously the taonam school!
Now the musuem features 9 different galleries, where it took almost 4 long years for the complete make over where it now features many new exhibits where some of the items are also on loan so as to be able to spread knowledge on the pernanakan culture not only in singapore but also around the world as well.
Reunion Buffet Luncheon
Where - Ellenborough Market Cafe at Paradox Hotel (formerly known as Merchant Court Hotel)
Address - 20 Merchant Road Singapore 058281
Getting there - Clarke Quay MRT
Highlights - Peranakan-themed Lunar New Year Buffet
Ambience - spacious and not crowded
Price per pax - S$65 (after credit card discount)
Rating - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+½
It has been 3 years (due to Covid) which we did not get to have our CNY reunion lunch/dinner with the whole family. This year we decided to do it slightly earlier to beat the crowd and we went back to our favourite Peranakan/Nonya themed self serve buffet with the modern twist in CNY atmosphere.
Wise decision to gather 2 weeks before CNY as the restaurant is about half filled. Not crowded and we were not restricted to the time limit. We were one of the last few tables to leave before the restaurant close at 3pm. Haha. Service is really good and attentive. We were awed. We managed to get a 30% discount with credit card promotion as we opted for lunch.
The standard did not drop although the hotel is now run by Paradox Hotel Group. We all had a very satisfying and enjoyable CNY luncheon. What a great start to the #yearofrabbit

A Slice Of Peranakan At Heritage Flavours
A short 3min jaunt over from Casa del Rio hotel in Melaka, you’ve got to check out Heritage Flavours when you’re next in Melaka.
With gorgeous Peranakan decor and equally eye-catching kuehs to match, it’s easy to spend an afternoon here with a cup of butterfly pea tea and yummy kuehs.
A plate of assorted kuehs cost less than 10RM, and the butterfly pea tea was around 7RM.

nasi lemak in retro setting
The white tiffin
6 Woodlands Square, B2 01, Singapore 737737
Chinese peranakan delight (Not halal)
Items ordered :
Tiffins Sampler (Mini portion of Curry Chicken, Beef Rendang, Babi Pongteh & Black Vinegar Pork with jasmine Rice )
Add on Set (Teh and kueh) $2.3p
Honey lemon $3.20
Begedil $1.90
They are known for their extra large portion of nasi lemak. We didn't order that, was actually considering ordering the nasi lemak, Laksa and beef Rendang but that's too much food so we ended up settling for the trio Sampler for 1. The portion was just nice for one. Lots of different varieties of dishes in it. Good for sharing too if you are not looking to have a heavy meal. Will try their Laksa and nasi lemak in our next visit.

Gorgeous Peranakan beaded shoes exhibition ♥️
Temporary kasut manik (beaded shoes) exhibition at Persatuan Peranakan Cina Melaka (PPCM) at 179, Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, Malacca ♥️
the exhibition only lasted for a day which I felt was such a pity, because you won’t even see such a collection in the Peranakan museums.
Have never seen such a large collection of beaded Peranakan shoes! Other than the ones made by the current students, the other shoes were on loan and there were many priceless antiques 👡

Tuck in a corner of Heartland Mall is this busy little restaurant that we kept passing by. Finally remembered to try it when we are there.
We came about 10 min before 6pm and the restaurant is already full. There is a queue system where you can take a number and wait for your turn. We only waited 15 min before we got a table. Ordered straight away and most of the items came in a hot clay pot and it is still boiling hot! They even have salted vegetable duck meat soup which is a rare gem nowadays! We love all the food there. too full to try the dessert but will go back and try other dishes again! Do try it if you are nearby, we also saw a lot of people took away the food too.

Peranakan heritage art
Address - InterContinental Hotel, 80 Middle Road, Singapore 188966
All over the InterContinental Hotel are heritage works of art and collectibles inspired by Singapore’s Peranakan heritage! Peranakan culture is basically a marriage between the Chinese and Malay/Indonesian cultures.
There are different varieties of crockery and dish ware on display in wooden shelves that resemble those that were used back in the olden days. A traditional dress top is also preserved and displayed on the lobby wall. This hotel is great for those who appreciate that extra dose of local heritage in the form of art!
My overall rating of the experience: 4 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It is also very popular spot among local photographers, all wanting to capture a photo of the pastel shophouses. Come here to snap an Insta-worthy photo with these beautiful houses as your backdrop, but be sure to be respectful as there are people living inside!
